The acute effect of alcohol on decision making in social drinkers.

RATIONALE: Many studies have reported the long-term adverse effects of alcohol on executive cognitive function in chronic alcohol abusers, yet little research has investigated the acute effects of alcohol in social drinkers. Studies on acute effects report alcohol-induced deficits on tasks that require executive cognitive processes, with alcohol acting to increase preservative errors and reduce planning. AIM: The present investigation examines the acute effects of a moderate dose of alcohol on a decision-making task that involves participants making a forced choice between two simultaneously

Dopamine transporter availability in medication free and in bupropion treated depression: a 99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT study.

BACKGROUND: Bupropion is thought to exert its antidepressive effect by blocking the dopamine transporter (DAT). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the DAT activity in depressed patients by means of 99mTc-TRODAT-1 SPECT in relation to the efficacy of bupropion treatment. METHODS: In 12 healthy controls and 16 depressed patients the baseline DAT activity was examined. Nine of the 16 patients went through an additional second SPECT investigation, after 4 weeks of bupropion treatment. RESULTS: In the depressed patients, the baseline DAT striatum-occipital ratio (SOR) (1.04+/-.36, mean+/-S

Associations of anxiety-related symptoms with reported history of childhood sexual abuse in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that persons with schizophrenia tend to experience significant levels of anxiety and that history of childhood sexual abuse may predispose some with schizophrenia to experience significant levels of persistent anxiety. It is unclear whether childhood sexual abuse is more closely linked to specific forms of anxiety including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: Data were gathered from April 2004 through November 2004 on trauma history, PTSD symptoms, social anxiety, and state and trait anxiety from 45 men with a SCID-I-confirmed diagnosis of s

Excessive daytime sleepiness in young adults: a 20-year prospective community study.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a symptom with high clinical and public health importance because of its association with increased risk for accidents, decreased productivity, and impaired quality of life. Little information is available regarding the longitudinal course or clinical correlates of EDS. The aim of this study was to explore associations between self-reported EDS, sleep disorder symptoms, major depression, and anxiety in a longitudinal community study of young adults. METHOD: A prospective single-age community study of young adults (Zurich Cohort Study) was condu

Defense mechanisms in a community-based sample of female adolescents with partial eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to assess whether female adolescents diagnosed with partial eating disorders (EDs) will show less adaptive defense mechanisms compared to female controls with no-ED. METHODS: The following questionnaires were administered to 423 female high-school students: The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ), and Life Style Index (LSI) (both tapping defense mechanisms), and a structured questionnaire assessing eating-related issues. Weight and height were also recorded. Partial anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) were d

Rates and symptoms of PTSD among cocaine-dependent patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated lifetime traumatic events and current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in a substance abuse sample. METHOD: Participants in the study consisted of 558 (75.1% male) cocaine-dependent individuals who completed self-report measures of trauma and PTSD symptoms prior to entry into treatment. RESULTS: Results showed a high number of lifetime traumatic events, even among those without PTSD. General disaster was the most prevalent. Current PTSD was found in 10.9% of the participants, with a significantly higher rate among women (21.6%) than among men (7.2

The roles of ethnicity and culture in the development of eating disturbance and body dissatisfaction: a meta-analytic review.

This meta-analysis involved 35 studies examining eating disturbance and body dissatisfaction in white and non-white populations and the role of acculturation in the development of eating-related psychopathology. While the role of acculturation in predisposing non-whites to eating disorders remains to be determined, mean effect sizes indicate that whites report more eating disturbance than non-whites. Differences are greatest when studies compare black and white college samples on measures of subclinical eating pathology, like dietary restraint, ideal body shape, and body dissatisfaction. They

Measuring desire for death among patients with HIV/AIDS: the schedule of attitudes toward hastened death.

OBJECTIVE: As physician-assisted suicide is debated, a need for standardized measurement of desire for death among medically ill individuals has emerged. The authors present preliminary validation data for a new self-report instrument, the Schedule of Attitudes Toward Hastened Death. METHOD: The participants were 195 patients with HIV/AIDS from two sites: 148 ambulatory patients and 47 patients who had been recently admitted to a facility for end-of-life care. The ambulatory participants completed the 20-item Schedule of Attitudes Toward Hastened Death and several other instruments, including

Deliberate exposure to motor vehicle exhaust gas: the psychosocial profile of attempted suicide.

OBJECTIVE: Deliberate exposure to motor vehicle exhaust gas has become the second most commonly used method of suicide in Australia. In an attempt to understand the factors contributing to the rise in popularity of this method, the psychosocial profiles, factors influencing method choice and circumstances of the act of self-harm were examined in a group of survivors. METHOD: A cross-sectional cohort study of 30 patients presenting for hyperbaric oxygen treatment having survived deliberate exposure to car exhaust gas was undertaken. A structured clinical interview was administered together wit

The effect of nefazodone on comorbid anxiety symptoms associated with depression: experience in family practice and psychiatric outpatient settings.

Retrospective analysis of two randomized, placebo-controlled trials evaluated the effectiveness of nefazodone in relieving depression-associated anxiety symptoms of patients with major depression in two practice settings. One study involved depressed patients (N = 138) treated in a family practice setting, the other, psychiatric clinic outpatients (N = 180). Nefazodone treatment was broadly effective across several measures of anxiety symptoms (HAM-D, HAM-A and SCL rating scales) in relieving depression-associated anxiety. The comparison drug, imipramine, was also found to be more effective th

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a CCK-B receptor antagonist, CI-988, in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

This multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, randomized study assessed the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a novel CCK-B antagonist CI-988 in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Patients received placebo or CI-988 (300 mg/day, thrice daily) for 4 weeks. Patients with a primary diagnosis of GAD according to DSM-III-R criteria were randomized. The study design included a 1- to 2-week single-blind placebo baseline phase, followed by a 4-week double-blind treatment phase. Efficacy was measured weekly by Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Clinic

eHealth literacy and decisional conflict in patients with coronary heart disease: chain mediation of cyberchondria and psychological inflexibility and a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality worldwide, and its management requires patients to make complex, preference-sensitive treatment decisions. Decisional conflict is common in this population and adversely affects treatment adherence and outcomes, yet its association with eHealth literacy and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between eHealth literacy and decisional conflict in patients with CHD, tested the chain-mediating roles of cyberchondria and psychological inflexibi

Making sense of the extraordinary - An investigation of the content and prevalence of appraisals of nonordinary experiences.

Individuals around the world report nonordinary experiences that stand out to them compared to their day-to-day or ordinary experiences. Yet, they can be appraised in very different ways, resulting in wellbeing and personal growth, or in marginalization and mental health problems. One challenge is that there are relatively few systematic efforts to explore possible appraisal processes and the overall contextual features of these experiences. In study 1, we report a validation and extension of a previously designed set of appraisal and contextual questions to the Inventory of Nonordinary Experi
