Easing the burden: a pilot study on the impact of mindfulness on the mental health of Brazilian medical students.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are more prevalent in medical students than in the general population. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have shown evidence of effectiveness in treating these conditions. However, findings among medical students are mixed, particularly in Brazilian samples. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effects of the Mindfulness-Based Health Promotion (MBHP) program on perceived stress, mindfulness, and symptoms of anxiety and depression in Brazilian medical students. METHODS: This single-arm pilot clinica

Cracking the Kinase Code: Urinary Biomarkers as Early Alarms for AAA Rupture-A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA) remains a leading cause of vascular death, with mortality rates approaching 90%. Biomarkers capable of identifying the most at-risk population are urgently needed in the clinic. We aimed to identify potential alterations in the urine proteome that can enable non-invasive detection of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) at high risk of rupture. Methods: We used multiplexed kinase inhibitor beads (MIBs) and quantitative mass spectrometry (MIB/MS) to examine potential biomarkers in urine samples. Quantitative proteomic profiling was co

Diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis using the cell tube block technique - a pilot study.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is caused by a feline coronavirus (FCoV) and it is one of the most important viral diseases of cats. Recently, new drugs have been developed and used to face the inexorable fatal prognosis of FIP when untreated. More than ever, a definitive ante-mortem diagnosis is crucial to identify the cats that would benefit from antiviral treatment and to avoid euthanasia of unaffected animals. Identification of FCoV in macrophages using immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the gold standard method for diagnosing FIP. In this pilot study, the role of IHC applied to cell tube b

Pilot study: non-invasive binocular fundal pulsation measurements using infrared photorefraction.

Choroidal blood flow plays an important role in myopia development, and non-invasive techniques to measure both eyes simultaneously would be valuable. We explored the potential of infrared photorefraction to measure pulsation-related fundal reflectance changes. Tiny pulsation-related variations in pupil brightness were detected using custom-developed software written in Visual C++. Pupil brightness changes needed to be corrected for spontaneous fluctuations in pupil size. The software also included video eye tracking to verify that the same fundal location was measured. Two subjects (ages 27 a

Proteome-Wide Analysis of Autoantibodies in Open-Angle Glaucoma in Japanese Population: A Pilot Study.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify novel autoantibodies specific for open-angle glaucoma (OAG), including normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), using proteome-wide autoantibody screening and to determine their utility for diagnosis. Methods: We conducted proteome-wide autoantibody screening by wet protein arrays. Autoantibody reactivity in the plasma of OAG patients (50 NTG and 69 POAG patients) was quantitatively analyzed and compared to that of controls (35 cataract patients). The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating charac

A pilot study: the effect of intensity and menstrual cycle phase on exercise-induced leukocytosis in females.

High-intensity exercise increases inflammation and elicits leukocytosis but may also increase infection risk. Interestingly, females have higher cell-mediated immunity than males. Sex hormones fluctuate across the menstrual cycle (MC), and the luteal phase has been linked to a more pro-inflammatory environment than the follicular phase. This study investigated whether white blood cell (WBC) count and WBC differential (i.e., neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils) differed across two MC phases following an acute bout of exercise that varied in intensity. Eight regularly

Student pharmacist accuracy and confidence in identifying dermatologic conditions in skin of color: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The literature doesn't provide sufficient data on student pharmacist proficiency in identifying dermatologic conditions in skin of color (SOC). It is vital that pharmacists are knowledgeable to recognize dermatologic conditions in SOC for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the confidence and accuracy of student pharmacists in identifying dermatologic conditions specifically in individuals with SOC. This research aims to address the existing gap in the training and education of future pharmacists concerning the accurate recognition and co

Internet-based acceptance and commitment therapy for bipolar disorder: A randomized controlled pilot trial.

Internet-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (iACT) offers a promising, scalable intervention format for individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), yet its feasibility and preliminary efficacy remain underexplored. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and initial efficacy of a 7-day self-guided iACT program delivered via a secure, mobile-responsive platform. Seventy individuals were screened, of whom 60 clinically stable adults with BD (aged 18-60) met eligibility criteria and were randomized to either the iACT group (n = 30) or an active control gr

Osteoprotegerin Is Elevated in Pulmonary Fibrosis and Associates with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Progression: A Pilot Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a decoy receptor for receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL), serves as a biomarker for liver fibrosis severity. Our recent findings show OPG production in fibrotic lung tissue, though its specific cellular source and role in pulmonary fibrosis are unknown. We hypothesized that OPG is produced by fibroblasts and serves as a marker for pulmonary fibrosis progression. METHODS: We examined OPG expression in human and mouse control and fibrotic lung tissue and used primary human lung fibroblasts and murine precision-cut lung slices to study O

Utilizing intravascular ultrasound for optimizing patient selection in venous sinus stenting: A pilot study.

BackgroundVenous sinus stenting (VSS) is an established treatment for idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), and pulsatile tinnitus (PT), but optimal patient selection remains a challenge. Current protocols rely on catheter angiography and manometry-based pressure gradients, which can be operator-dependent and subject to measurement variability. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) offers real-time, cross-sectional visualization of venous anatomy, potentially providing more consistent and objective assessments of stenosis severity.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study of 31 patients underg

Establishing the Frequency of the HLA Class II Pseudotumour 'at Risk' Genotype: A Pilot Epidemiologic Analysis.

PURPOSE: Immune-mediated adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) to implanted metallic devices are an increasingly recognised orthopaedic concern. Recent research has identified a critical HLA genotype associated with increased risk of ALTR development around in situ arthroplasty implants. Carriage imparts a > 700% increased relative-risk of high-grade peri-prosthetic lesion development, associated with pain and joint dysfunction and likely contributing to an increased burden of complex revision surgery. Despite being first reported in 2017, the 'at risk' genotype has only subsequently been des

Pulmonary function deterioration screening using a patch-type multimodal sensor: a pilot study.

The progressive decline in pulmonary function contributes to the risk of chronic respiratory diseases and reduction in quality of life. However, the conventional pulmonary function test, Spirometry, is only available after the patient acknowledges the symptoms. In case of structural damage to the lungs, it is irreversible, and complete treatment is difficult. Therefore, we aimed to establish a simple pulmonary function monitoring system using the photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor on the patch-type multimodal sensor. As a pilot study, we conducted trend analysis of the proposed sensor during si

Pilot Evaluation of Intestinal Current Measurement in Cystic Fibrosis and CRMS/CFSPID Patients in Poland.

Background/Objectives: The term 'cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator-related metabolic syndrome/cystic fibrosis screen positive, inconclusive diagnosis (CRMS/CFSPID)' refers to patients with positive screening tests but without a final diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Intestinal Current Measurement (ICM) is a novel diagnostic technique that may document the abnormal function of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. Our study aims to compare the cumulative chloride secretory response in the ICM study in the Polish population of CF patients, CRMS/CFSPID, and

Combining traditional context and sailing in the psychological approach to patients with muscular dystrophies. A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Muscular diseases (MDs) are rare genetic conditions marked by progressive motor, cardiac, and respiratory decline, often accompanied by significant psychological and social challenges. Anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life (QoL) are common among individuals with MDs, highlighting the importance of integrating psychological assessment and support into multidisciplinary care. Although evidence on psychosocial interventions remains limited, emerging research suggests that nature-based therapeutic activities -particularly adapted sailing - can reduce anxiety and enhance psy

The utility of Glaucoma Information Cards for grasping glaucoma subtypes: a single-center pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, anticholinergic drugs were contraindicated for glaucoma, regardless of subtype. The contraindication in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) led to excessive medication restrictions because anticholinergic drugs are associated with a low risk of acute glaucoma attacks in OAG. To eliminate this problem, the contraindications of anticholinergic drugs were reduced for types from all glaucoma to angle closure glaucoma (ACG) in 2019. This change requires differentiation of OAG from ACG for the proper use of drugs. The Japan Ophthalmologists Association created Glaucoma Info

Environmental risk factors for self-harm during imprisonment: A pilot prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Self-harm is a major public health issue in the imprisoned population. Limited high-quality evidence exists for the potential impact of prison environmental factors such as solitary confinement. This exploratory pilot prospective cohort study in a large male remand prison in England sought to estimate effect sizes for a comprehensive range of prison environmental factors in relation to self-harming behaviours. METHODS: A random sample of all prisoners (N = 149) starting a period of imprisonment at the study prison took part in a clinical research interview, which assessed a rang
