[Ultrasonic and biochemical detection and prenatal treatments of intra-uterine fetal growth retardation (author's transl)].

Efficacy of three ultrasonographic and six biochemical methods for the detection of intrauterine growth retardation were assessed in prospective studies of 40 cases associated with short uterine fundal height less than -1.5 SD and/or small ultrasonographically determined total intrauterine volume (TIUV) less than -1 SD of normal populations. Prenatal treatments, consisting of bed rest, high protein diet, intravenous drip infusion of 10% maltose, 500 ml per day, for more than 12 days, etc., were administered on them. Fifteen cases (37.5%) delivered small-for-date infants, 9 of which complicated

The impact of dolutegravir on the growth of HIV-exposed uninfected infants: an observational cohort study in rural Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral treatment (ART) in pregnant and breastfeeding women living with HIV exposes their HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants to drug, which might affect their outcomes. We evaluated the effects of maternal dolutegravir-based versus efavirenz-based ART and associated factors on growth outcomes in HEU children born to women living with HIV in rural Tanzania. METHODS: In this observational cohort study, we used data from the prospective Kilombero and Ulanga Antiretroviral Cohort (KIULARCO) to assess growth outcomes (up to age 18 months) of HEU children born to women living w

Naturally occurring influenza reassortment in pigs facilitates the emergence of intrahost virus subpopulations with distinct genotypes and replicative fitness.

UNLABELLED: Pigs are recognized as amplifying hosts for influenza A virus (IAV) reassortant viruses. Understanding the extent of IAV reassortment occurring at the individual pig level in naturally infected pigs and how reassortment impacts virus diversity, persistence, and replicative fitness is essential for countering IAV threats to humans and animals. Here, 244 IAV plaques were isolated from 24 commercial pigs, resulting in 26 distinct genome segment constellations. About 33% (8/24) of pigs were infected with two or more different genotypes, with two pigs harboring two or more different sub

Fluconazole-Induced Ploidy Change in Cryptococcus neoformans Results from the Uncoupling of Cell Growth and Nuclear Division.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a pathogenic yeast that causes lethal cryptococcal meningitis in immunocompromised patients. One of the challenges in treating cryptococcosis is the development of resistance to azole antifungals. Previous studies linked azole resistance to elevated numbers of copies of critical resistance genes in aneuploid cells. However, how aneuploidy is formed in the presence of azole drugs remains unclear. This study showed that treatment with inhibitory concentrations of an azole drug, fluconazole (FLC), resulted in a significant population of cells with increased DNA content,

Infertility in resource-constrained settings: moving towards amelioration.

It is often presumed that infertility is not a problem in resource-poor areas where fertility rates are high. This is challenged by consiste … gued that scarce healthcare resources should be directed towards reducing fertility and restricting population growth. However, recognition of the plight of infertile couples in low-income settings is growing. One of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals was for universal access to reproductive health care by 2015, and WHO has recommended that infertilit …

Lipid Profiles in Breast Cancer: Clinical Associations and Biological Insights.

Alterations in lipid metabolism are increasingly recognized as important contributors to breast cancer biology. Lipids regulate membrane structure, intracellular signaling, and energy homeostasis, and cancer cells undergo lipid metabolic reprogramming to support tumor growth and progression. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the relationship between circulating lipid profiles and breast cancer risk, tumor characteristics, and outcomes, with a focus on total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-

Neoadjuvant befotertinib plus vorolanib in resectable stage II-IIIB EGFR-mutant NSCLC: a study protocol for the prospective, single-arm phase I/II trial.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant targeted therapy is a promising strategy for resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation, but pathological regression remains suboptimal with EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) monotherapy. Befotertinib is a third-generation EGFR-TKI, whereas vorolanib is a multi-target antiangiogenic TKI. Combined EGFR and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) pathway inhibition may enhance tumor regression while preserving surgical feasibility. METHODS: This is a prospective, open-label, single-arm phase I/II stu

Breeding on a Tropical Island Proves More Difficult Than Expected: The Ongoing Breeding Failure of Laysan Albatross on Clarion Island.

In the 1980s, the Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) expanded its breeding range into the eastern Pacific and established colonies on several islands off the coast of Mexico. Colony growth has varied widely among these islands, likely reflecting differences in immigration rates and local conditions, such as food availability and predation risk, which can influence breeding success and population dynamics. We assessed the breeding performance of Laysan Albatrosses on Clarion Island (2016-2023) in relation to foraging ecology and local predation. We monitored breeding success through per

Jasmonic and salicylic acid pathways shape the rhizosphere microbiome, affecting aphid herbivory and soil-mediated insect-plant interactions in a density-dependent manner.

Aboveground induction of plant defense pathways can shape root-associated microbial communities. However, whether these changes are pathway-specific and how they affect plant growth and resistance remain unclear. We evaluated how induction of the jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) defense pathways shapes the root microbiome of Brassica oleracea and whether these soil-mediated shifts affect plant growth and resistance to herbivory in a subsequent generation using a plant-soil feedback approach. In the conditioning phase, defense pathways were induced either through foliar application of

LsNAC72 from a major QTL activates LsNRAMP7 expression to promote iron accumulation in lettuce.

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient critical for plant growth and development, as well as for human health. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) serves as a rich source of Fe for consumers. However, little is known about the genetics underlying Fe concentration in lettuce. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of Fe concentration using the multiparent advanced generation intercross population derived from 16 founder lines. A significant locus associated with Fe concentration was identified on chromosome 7. Sequence and expression analysis suggested that the gene LsNAC72, w

Low-temperature plasma priming enhances nutrient removal and astaxanthin production in Haematococcus pluvialis: Transcriptomic responses during controlled aquaculture wastewater cultivation.

Microalgal cultivation can recover dissolved nutrients from aquaculture wastewater while generating value-added biomass, but wastewater stress and slow growth limit the performance of Haematococcus pluvialis. This study investigated low-temperature plasma (LTP) pretreatment as a novel priming strategy to enhance nutrient removal and astaxanthin production by H. pluvialis in a controlled, sterilized aquaculture wastewater system. Dosage optimization revealed a biphasic response: 30 kV for 60 s induced a sublethal oxidative stimulus, increased antioxidant enzyme activities, and improved subseque

Genome wide transcriptional changes underlie gradual and recurrent adaptation to protein malnutrition in zebrafish.

Lysosome-rich enterocytes (LREs) are a specialized population of intestinal cells that mediate the uptake and absorption of dietary proteins in fish and neonatal mammals. Loss of LRE function causes inhibited growth and poor survival due to protein malnutrition. Previously, we reported that in zebrafish loss of Plasmolipin (pllp), an endosomal membrane protein highly expressed in LREs, impairs LRE differentiation and dietary protein absorption, resulting in marked reduction in survival rates. Raising pllp homozygous mutants surviving to adulthood and in-crossing them for multiple generations r

Surgical Outcomes in Adult Patients With Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign bone neoplasm often considered a disease of childhood, with existing literature suggesting lesions typically become quiescent by young adulthood. Consequently, the presentations and surgical outcomes of adult patients remain poorly characterized. This retrospective review analyzed 50 adult patients treated surgically for craniofacial FD at a single institution between 1988 and 2024 to evaluate patterns of presentation, operative indications, and long-term outcomes. The cohort (54.0% male) had a mean follow-up of 15.8 years. Polyostotic involvement was present

The role of epigenetic modifications in cancer-associated fibroblasts.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) constitute a heterogeneous population of stromal cells whose tumor-modulating activities are highly context-dependent. Unlike cancer cells, CAFs rarely harbor stable genetic mutations; instead, their phenotypic plasticity is largely driven by reversible epigenetic reprogramming. Within the tumor microenvironment (TME), CAFs function as key regulators by secreting extracellular matrix (ECM) components, paracrine growth factors, cytokines, and metabolic intermediates that collectively promote tumor growth, invasion, and therapeutic resistance. Recent advances
