In this work, an SIRS model with age structure is proposed for recurrent infectious disease by incorporating temporary immunity and delay. We formulate the model as an abstract non-densely defined Cauchy problem and derive the conditions for the global stability of disease free equilibrium, the local stability of endemic equilibrium, and the existence of Hopf bifurcation. Both non-periodic and periodic behaviors are possible when the disease persists in population, where time delay plays an important role. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate our theoretical results.

INTRODUCTION: The SOX5 gene encodes a transcription factor involved in the regulation of chondrogenesis and the development of the nervous system.
CASE REPORT: We report a 10 years-old girl with developmental delay, behavior problems and dysmorphic features of this new syndrome with developmental delay. She had a 12p12 deletion involving SOX5.
CONCLUSIONS: We review the reported cases, intragenic SOX5 deletions and larger 12p12 deletions encompassing SOX5. We analyze the genotype-phenotype associations and the genes involved in our patient.

Phenobarbital has been in use for a century. Because of its low cost and ease of use as a broad spectrum antiepileptic drug, it is often used in low-cost situations. It has significant adverse effects and can produce learning and behavior problems in children. In addition it is a major inducer of the hepatic Cytochrome P450 system producing many interactions. Because of these issues, the usage of this drug has declined substantially over the past few decades although it remains a therapeutic option in difficult to treat epilepsy patients.

Laparoscopic removal of the gonads from male and female horses is regularly performed for a variety of reasons. In female horses, common indications for ovariectomy include behavioral problems and signs of abdominal pain that are linked to estrus. Another indication is an abnormal, enlarged ovary, typically due to ovarian neoplasia, the most common being granulosa thecal cell tumor. Ovariectomy is also a treatment option for ovarian hematomas and other abnormalities. In addition, ovariectomy is used to sterilize mares intended for artificial insemination or embryo transfer programs.

This study examines the role of abuse-specific maternal support in the association between parent depressive symptoms and child externalizing problems in a sample of children with a history of sexual abuse. In total, 106 mother-child dyads were studied. The association between maternal depressive symptoms and child delinquency behaviors was found to partially operate through abuse-specific maternal support, which was assessed via parent report. Implications of the findings for parenting programs are discussed, and future research directions are considered.

Infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia often require intensive treatment after birth, have prolonged hospitalizations, and have other congenital anomalies. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited genetic disorder commonly associated with neuropsychiatric complications like epilepsy, mental retardation, autism and other behavioral problems and constitutes about 1-4% of the autistic population. Mental retardation and seizures, particularly infantile spasms are significant risk factors for the development of autism. Patients of TSC with autism are more likely to have temporal tubers than those cases without autism. We describe clinical and neuroimaging features of two such cases of tuberous sclerosis with autism.

Substance use disorders are an important public health problem associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Effective maintenance pharmacotherapies are available for tobacco, alcohol, and opioid use disorders. We report a 40-year-old female with mild mental retardation and behavior problems and her 6-year-old daughter. Chromosome analysis showed that both patients had a proximal duplication in the short arm of chromosome 16. The aberration was characterized further with band-specific probes, resulting in a 46,XX,dir dup(16)(pter --> p11.2::p12.1 --> qter) karyotype. The clinical and cytogenetical findings are compared to other patients with partial trisomy 16p reported in the literature.

In an exploratory study of 37 lesbian-mother families, the frequency of children's contact with adults in their extended family and friendship networks was found to counter stereotypes of such children as isolated from parents' families of origin. Children were more likely to have regular contact with relatives of the biological than nonbiological mother. Mothers rated those in regular contact with grandparents as having fewer behavior problems, and those in more regular contact with unrelated adults rated themselves more positively on general well-being.

Dementia is extremely common among nursing home patients, and it takes many forms. Accurate assessment by staff is crucial in providing appropriate care to these patients. Equally important is the ability to establish care priorities. Current staging models are so general, however, that their usefulness is limited. Thus, this paper proposes a strategy that, using basic assessment data, categorizes dementia residents according to four key determinants of care needs: activities of daily living status, behavioral problems, communication abilities, and physical transition.

We examined differences in stressors and well-being for caregivers who care for a relative with dementia at home and those who had placed their relative in a nursing home. The groups did not differ in depression or somatic complaints, but nursing home caregivers had fewer social and interpersonal disruptions. Controlling for caregiving problems, nursing home caregivers reported more stressors due to ADL (activities of daily living) assistance, their relatives' behavioral and cognitive functioning, and lack of caregiving support from family and friends.

Ultrasonic evaluation and diagnosis in cases of severe oligohydramnios is extremely difficult, and management problems exist. With appropriate diagnostic procedures, management becomes less of a dilemma. Amnioinfusion, which is the instillation of fluid into the amniotic cavity, enhances ultrasonic resolution necessary for observation of fetal anatomy and behavior. The cases of severe oligohydramnios reviewed typify those in which amnioinfusion was used to diagnose and manage mid-trimester pregnancies. This technique enabled the practitioner to define the specific cause of the oligohydramnios.

Based on the study of 40 patients in a unit of a large geriatric center, as well as on long overall experience, the problems of aged men and women with various emotional disorders are discussed. Case abstracts are presented to illustrate chronic organic brain syndrome, delirium, hallucinatory behavior, paranoid ideation, depression, and reactions triggered by physical illness. The geriatrician should be fully aware of all the interlocking factors in the patient's adjustment to his condition. Only in this way can the geriatrician and staff choose the best relevant therapy.
