Nurse Practitioner Care Delivery Models: Meeting the Rapidly Expanding Needs of Cancer Patients.

Half of all Canadians will develop cancer at some point in their lifetimes. These rates have increased substantially over the last decade alongside increasing effectiveness and complexity of treatment options. Therefore, the need for patients to receive both an early diagnosis and ongoing care has never been so important. In Alberta, referrals to oncology specialty care have increased 18% in the last 7 years with no commensurate increase in the number of oncology health care professionals. Challenges with oncologic care access and provider recruitment are not unique to Alberta. In 2004, Cancer

A battle in the hive against the Queen Bee: reaction of female subordinates' unconcious mind.

When women in leadership roles act antagonistically toward female subordinates, it's referred to as the Queen Bee Syndrome. Though it often appears as a top-down dynamic, little is known regarding possible subordinate blowback. With the goal to look into the unconscious reactions of female subordinates performing under female leaders in male-dominated workplaces, this exploratory study utilized a qualitative method. Nine female professionals from an array of industries took part in semi-structured interviews, and MAXQDA was employed to assess the data using both inductive as well as deductive

Gossypiboma persists - A case series & literature review highlighting the clinical spectrum, diagnostic dilemmas, and surgical outcomes from a single tertiary care centre.

Gossypiboma, also known as textiloma, is a rare but serious complication that occurs when surgical sponges or gauze are inadvertently left inside a patient's body during abdominal or pelvic surgeries. This retained foreign material can lead to severe inflammatory reactions and potentially life-threatening complications. The case series presented highlights five patients diagnosed with gossypiboma, each experiencing a range of symptoms including abdominal pain, acute small bowel obstruction, and perforated peritonitis. These patients required surgical intervention to address their conditions. R

Dental Oncology: A Pressing Necessity for Comprehensive Cancer Care.

Dental oncology is an emerging interdisciplinary field at the intersection of dentistry and oncology, addressing the unique oral health challenges faced by cancer patients. As cancer incidence continues to rise globally, the need for specialized dental care before, during, and after cancer treatment has become increasingly critical. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy often result in debilitating oral complications such as mucositis, xerostomia, osteoradionecrosis, infections, and altered dental development in pediatric patients. These complications not only compromise a patient's qu

Recent advances in immunopathogenesis and clinical practice: mastering the challenge-managing of non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are widespread environmental pathogens that can lead to significant disease burden, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, but also in those with a normal immune system. The global incidence of NTM is increasing rapidly, with Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) being one of the most common types. The immunopathogenesis of the MAC involves a complex interaction between the bacteria and the host immune system. MAC survives and replicates within macrophages by preventing the fusion of phagosomes and lysosomes. The mycobacteria can neutralize reactive oxyge

Companions in antimicrobial resistance: examining transmission of common antimicrobial-resistant organisms between people and their dogs, cats, and horses.

SUMMARYNumerous questions persist regarding the role of companion animals as potential reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant organisms that can infect humans. While relative antimicrobial usage in companion animals is lower than that in humans, certain antimicrobial-resistant pathogens have comparable colonization rates in companion animals and their human counterparts, which inevitably raises questions regarding potential antimicrobial resistance (AMR) transmission. Furthermore, the close contact between pets and their owners, as well as pets, veterinary professionals, and the veterinary clin

The Transition from Childhood to Adolescence: Between Health and Vulnerability.

Transitioning from childhood into adolescence is an extraordinary time of life, associated with major physical, emotional, cognitive, and social changes and characterized by dynamic development in which interaction with the environment modulates the individual resources responsible for well-being and health. This sensitive period is the time when, in addition to hormonal, metabolic, and neural changes, certain behavioral strategies begin to take shape that will shortly go on to define the emotional, social, and cultural identity of the individual. This narrative review aimed to uncover the cru

The Experiences of Nurses as Double-Duty Caregivers for a Family Member at the End of Life: Interpretive Description.

Increasing numbers of individuals with complex, advanced illnesses are living longer and being cared for in the home by family members. As a result, family caregivers often experience physical, emotional, psychological, and social distress. A unique subset of this population are nurses who find themselves providing care in both their family lives and work lives, a phenomenon known as "double-duty caregiving." This study explored the experiences of nurses providing end-of-life care for family members while continuing to work as a nurse and the consequences of this experience. A qualitative desi

Linking psoriasis to atrial fibrillation: Insights from "Association between psoriasis and atrial fibrillation: A systematic review and meta-analysis".

Patients with psoriasis indeed face an elevated risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF), underscoring the need for vigilant monitoring to facilitate early detection and intervention. Given the current body of evidence linking psoriasis and AF is derived from observational studies, there is a clear need for more robust, multicenter, large-scale randomized studies. Such research would help to validate and reinforce the findings from observational data. Large-scale, randomized studies are necessary to confirm the association between psoriasis and AF, addressing potential biases and confoundin

The impact of home mechanical ventilation on the time and manner of death for those with Motor neurone disease (MND): A qualitative study of bereaved family members.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder which is ultimately terminal. It causes muscle weakness which can lead to the need for assistance in breathing, for some with the disease. This paper draws on qualitative research using semi-structured interviews with 32 people bereaved by the death of a family member with MND who was dependent on home mechanical ventilation, from across the United Kingdom. Interviews explored how the end-of-life of a person who had used non-invasive ventilation to assist their breathing was experienced by participants, who had cared about

Recommendations to advance equity in tobacco control.

Reducing racial and socioeconomic inequities in smoking has been declared a priority for tobacco control in the USA for several decades. Yet despite the rhetoric, these inequities persist and some have actually worsened over time. Although tobacco companies have targeted racially and ethnically diverse and lower-income tobacco users, which substantially contributes to these disparities, less attention has been given to the role of individuals and organisations within the tobacco control movement who have allowed progress in eliminating disparities to stagnate. We examine the failure of tobacco

From stigma to increased social acceptance? Living with Machado-Joseph disease in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal.

This study describes the experiences with the stigma attached to Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) in São Miguel Island, the Azores (Portugal). We draw on semi-structured interviews with persons with MJD, family members, healthcare professionals, and direct care providers recruited through the local patient's association (n = 28). Qualitative thematic analysis revealed three main themes: (i) the intense stigma associated with MJD in the past; (ii) the current tendency towards increased openness; and (iii) increased availability of information about MJD and support. The findings suggest that stigmat
