An Implementation Research Study on Uterotonics Use Patterns and Heat-stable Carbetocin Acceptability and Safety for Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The burden of maternal mortality attributable to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains high in Nigeria. Currently, oxytocin, and misoprostol, which are largely of suboptimal quality, are used for PPH prevention and treatment. Heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) is a viable uterotonic option for PPH prevention in a setting like Nigeria where compromised supply and cold chain systems result in the preponderance of poor-quality oxytocin and suboptimal PPH management. It is crucial to understand how healthcare providers (HCPs) accept and use HSC for PPH prevention, and what factor

Use of Large Language Models to Classify Epidemiological Characteristics in Synthetic and Real-World Social Media Posts About Conjunctivitis Outbreaks: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of web-based search and social media can help identify epidemics, potentially earlier than clinical methods or even potentially identifying unreported outbreaks. Monitoring for eye-related epidemics, such as conjunctivitis outbreaks, can facilitate early public health intervention to reduce transmission and ocular comorbidities. However, monitoring social media content for conjunctivitis outbreaks is costly and laborious. Large language models (LLMs) could overcome these barriers by assessing the likelihood that real-world outbreaks are being described. However, public heal

Promoting childbirth companions in South Africa: a randomised pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Most women delivering in South African State Maternity Hospitals do not have a childbirth companion; in addition, the quality of care could be better, and at times women are treated inhumanely. We piloted a multi-faceted intervention to encourage uptake of childbirth companions in state hospitals, and hypothesised that lay carers would improve the behaviour of health professionals. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial of an intervention to promote childbirth companions in hospital deliveries. We promoted evidence-based information for maternity staff at 10 hos

Equitable Palliative care In the Community through Primary Care (EPIC-PC) study protocol: a realist study to propose a new integrated neighbourhood team approach to palliative care.

INTRODUCTION: Avoidable and unfair variation in access to palliative care exists for different groups of people and communities. Primary and community care teams deliver most palliative care and care to people at the end of life at home but the quality of care provided is variable. This is an under-researched area and receives little attention in service design and policy. This study will investigate the key contexts, resources and components required for an integrated approach to palliative care to deliver improved and more equitable outcomes for patients and carers. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Th

The role of syndromic knowledge in Ethiopian veterinarians' treatment of cattle.

Veterinarians play a significant role in the treatment and prevention of livestock diseases at the farm level, safeguarding public health and ensuring food safety. In sub-Saharan Africa, access to quality veterinary services is a major challenge for livestock farmers due to the low number of publicly employed veterinarians, underfunding and privatisation of veterinary services. Low investment in veterinary services and infrastructure, including a lack of laboratories for diagnosis, has made veterinarians rely on their experience and knowledge of cattle disease symptoms developed over years of

Detection and follow-up of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and risk factors in the Southern Cone of Latin America: the pulmonary risk in South America (PRISA) study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has estimated that by 2030, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will be the third leading cause of death worldwide. Most knowledge of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is based on studies performed in Europe or North America and little is known about the prevalence, patient characteristics and change in lung function over time in patients in developing countries, such as those of Latin America. This lack of knowledge is in sharp contrast to the high levels of tobacco consumption and exposure to biomass fuels exhibited in Latin America, both major
