Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies, which can change the morphology of the skull, face, and maxillary sinus due to the disruption in the fusion of palatal shelves. This study aimed to investigate the volume and dimensions of the maxillary sinus in unilateral CLP patients along with comparing the healthy and affected sides. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 27 cone-beam computed tomography stereotypes (14 male and 13 female) of patients with unilateral CLP. Maxillary sinuses were traced separately on each side and analyzed by OnDeman

PURPOSE: Brain radiation therapy (RT) combined with immunotherapy is standard for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with brain metastases. However, RT-induced hematologic toxicities (HTs) can cause treatment interruption and lymphopenia, potentially impairing immunotherapy efficacy. Because the skull bone marrow has recently been identified as a key hematopoietic site, this study evaluated the impact of skull RT dose on HTs in patients with NSCLC undergoing cranial RT and immunotherapy.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: This retrospective study consecutively included 191 patients with NSC

OBJECTIVE The middle clinoid process (MCP) is a bony projection that extends from the sphenoid bone near the lateral margin of the sella turcica. The varied prevalence and morphological features of the MCP in populations stratified by age, race, and sex are unknown; however, the knowledge of its anatomy and preoperative recognition on CT scans can aid greatly in complication avoidance and management. The aim of this study was to further illustrate the surgical anatomy of the parasellar region and to quantify the incidence of MCP and caroticoclinoid rings (CCRs) in dried preserved human anatomi

Elder abuse was first described almost 30 years ago. Today, approximately 1 in 25 elders is abused each year in the United States. A newly described form of domestic violence, the incidence of elder abuse will surely increase as the elderly population grows. Physical abuse/inflicted trauma is generally considered the most extreme form of elder mistreatment and includes blunt trauma, sexual assault, traumatic alopecia, and burns. Elder homicide is usually due to gunshot wounds, blunt trauma, stab wounds, or asphyxia. However, the difficult aspect of assessing the possible elder abuse homicide v

In radiology research soft tissues are often simulated on bone specimens using liquid materials such as water, or gel-like materials, such as ballistic gel. This study aimed to test the effect of hydration on the anatomical form of dry craniofacial bone specimens. Sixteen human dry skulls and 16 mandibles were scanned with an industrial scanner in dry conditions and after water embedding. Ten skulls were also embedded for different time periods (5 or 15 min). The subsequent 3D surface models were best-fit superimposed and compared by calculating mean absolute distances between them at various

In 2019, the updated and extended version of Terminologia Anatomica was published by the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT). This new edition uses more precise and adequate anatomical names compared to its predecessors. Nevertheless, numerous terms have been modified, which poses a challenge to those who prefer traditional anatomical names, i.e. medical students, teachers, clinicians and their instructors. Therefore, there is a need to popularise this new edition of terminology and explain these recent changes. The anatomy of the head, including the cranium,

Face blindness, also called prosopagnosia, is the inability to recognize familiar faces and is often secondary to dysfunction of the fusiform gyrus. This symptom can be part of dementia or be related to a lesion in this anatomical structure. We present the case of a 78-year-old female patient, with a diagnosis of dementia without prosopagnosia, who developed an episode of transient loss of consciousness. A brain computed tomography scan revealed an extensive right hemispheric chronic subdural hematoma. Patient underwent urgent hematoma drainage after deterioration of the neurological condition

BACKGROUND: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, benign but locally aggressive vascular tumor affecting adolescent males. While endoscopic resection with preoperative embolization remains the treatment of choice, recurrence remains a challenge, often driven by incomplete excision or poor follow-up adherence.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of recurrent JNA in adolescent males, each highlighting a different modifiable risk factor for recurrence. Case 1 involved a 21-year-old with prior resection and poor postoperative follow-up, who re-presented with Radkowski Stage III

Pulsatile exophthalmos can be a presenting sign of several orbital pathologies, such as trauma, iatrogenic injury, or congenital defect, or as a complication after orbital reconstructive surgery. Traditional approaches to management are conservative, with the goal being spontaneous resolution. The following case illustrates this rare but clinically significant complication and its treatment strategies. A 48-year-old male underwent a bifrontal craniotomy with resection of a fibrous dysplasia, followed by reconstruction of the skull base and orbit with split-thickness calvarial autograft. Prior

Reconstruction of the ear and temporal region presents unique challenges due to the complex anatomy of the lateral skull base and the need to restore both structural integrity and auditory function. Historically managed as separate entities, auricular reconstruction and hearing rehabilitation are increasingly approached in an integrated manner, supported by advances in microsurgical techniques and implantable hearing technologies. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence on microsurgical reconstruction of the ear and temporal region in conjunction with hearing rehabilitation, an

Background: Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a rare and aggressive odontogenic malignancy that originates within the jaw bones without initial mucosal involvement. Its atypical and nonspecific symptoms frequently lead to diagnostic delays, especially in maxillary presentations. Methods: A 74-year-old male presented with persistent trigeminal-like neuralgic pain along the ophthalmic branch, initially misdiagnosed as secondary trigeminal neuralgia. MRI revealed a 45 × 46 × 34 mm mass occupying the right maxillary sinus with orbital wall destruction and dural invasion. Following histopath

BACKGROUND: Encephalocele is a pathological condition characterized by the herniation of intracranial contents through a cranial bone defect. Although most cases are congenital, traumatic encephaloceles can occur following blunt head injury, surgical interventions, or other acquired causes. These lesions are clinically significant due to their association with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and the risk of life-threatening meningitis. Traumatic encephaloceles in children are exceedingly rare, particularly those involving the fronto-ethmoidal region.

Ethmoid mucoceles are expansile, benign cystic lesions characterized by slow growth, predominantly affecting the frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid sinus, and infrequently the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses. Intracranial involvement is rare and is typically associated with large or longstanding lesions. We present a case involving a 34-year-old immunocompetent woman who experienced non-specific facial pain subsequent to an influenza infection without exhibiting typical sinonasal or neurological symptoms. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a small ethmoid sinus lesi

Chordomas are rare malignant tumors that typically arise at the skull base and rarely present with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea. We report the case of a 40-year-old man with a clival chordoma who initially presented with headaches and serous rhinorrhea. Imaging revealed a non-enhancing cystic lesion extending from the prepontine cistern to the sphenoid sinus. Endoscopic endonasal removal of the cystic lesion and dural reconstruction was performed. Histopathology of the lesion confirmed a conventional chordoma, with positive brachyury and preserved nuclear SMARCB1 staining. The diagnosi

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma of childhood. For stratification purposes, rhabdomyosarcoma is classified into fusion-positive RMS (alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma) and fusion-negative RMS (embryonal or spindle cell/sclerosing, FN-RMS) subtypes according to its PAX::FOXO1 fusion status. This study aims to highlight the pathologic and molecular characteristics of a cohort of FN-RMS using a targeted NGS RNA-Seq assay.
METHODS: Twelve tumors were analyzed through targeted RNA-Seq using the Trusight Pancancer panel from Illumina. Molecular alterations were then

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The risk of developing neurovascular late effects after radiotherapy is an area of concern when treating pediatric brain tumor patients. However, knowledge is sparse regarding best practice for clinical management during the radiotherapy (RT) planning process and follow-up examinations. This study therefore aimed at mapping how the risk of neurovascular late effects is considered for pediatric brain or skull base tumor patients treated with radiotherapy in Europe.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two web-based surveys ‑ a RT and a pediatric oncology (PO) survey - were distribute

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumor is non-neoplastic lesions that form tumor-like masses, typically occurring in the lungs and orbits, with rare involvement of intracranial regions such as the Meckel cave. While neuroimaging can assist in differential diagnosis, definitive diagnosis may remain challenging. Some cases are associated with immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease, highlighting the importance of histopathological confirmation to guide appropriate management.
