Identification of thrombotic complications of the arm in blood donors: Evidence from literature and national data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research on donor complications has focused mainly on vasovagal reactions, with less attention to local complications. Early detection of upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (UDVT) is essential to prevent serious outcomes such as pulmonary embolism. This study assesses the association between UDVT and blood donation to facilitate identification and improve donor care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted using PubMed and Notify Library. Reports on therapeutic apheresis and clinical studies were excluded. Articles reporting aggregated data or ind

KF4 Anti-Chymotrypsin-like Elastase 1 Antibody and Purified Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Have Similar but Not Additive Efficacy in Preventing Emphysema in Murine Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency is the most common genetic cause of emphysema. Chymotrypsin-like elastase 1 (CELA1) is a serine protease neutralized by AAT and is important in emphysema progression. Cela1-deficiency is protective in murine models of AAT-deficient emphysema. KF4 anti-CELA1 antibody prevented emphysema in porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) and cigarette smoke models in wild-type mice. METHODS: We evaluated potential toxicities of KF4 and its ability to prevent emphysema in AAT deficiency. We found Cela1 protein expression in mouse lungs, pancreas, small intestin

[Immunosuppression in Cancer: Strategies for Infection Prevention].

Antimicrobial prophylaxis is an important cornerstone for reducing morbidity and mortality of cancer patients. Important strides have been made in recent years in vaccination, drug prophylaxes and the use of growth-factor support. We detail these changes to the respective recommendations here.Patients with malignant disease are recommended to receive vaccinations against common respiratory pathogens (COVID-19, influenza, pneumococci, and RSV). For both influenza (now trivalent vaccine) and pneumococci (now PCV20), the preferred vaccine has changed. A VZV vaccination using an inactivated virus-

An Evidence Base for Heart Disease Prevention using a Mediterranean Diet Comprised Primarily of Vegetarian Food.

Dietary patterns, nutrition, physical activity, air pollution, tobacco smoke, ethnicity and genetics affect heart disease. Vegetarian food diets are one of the important factors in its prevention and control. People living in the five blue zones, mostly consuming the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), have the highest longevity in the world and the least incidence of heart disease. There are several forms of heart pathology, e.g., the most common coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, heart valve disease and abnormal heart rhythms. Heart disease is the leading caus

A Paternal Fish Oil Diet Preconception Reduces Lung Inflammation in a Toxicant-Driven Murine Model of New Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

New bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a neonatal disease that is theorized to begin in utero and manifests as reduced alveolarization due to inflammation of the lung. Risk factors for new BPD in human infants include intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), premature birth (PTB) and formula feeding. Using a mouse model, our group recently reported that a paternal history of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) exposure increased his offspring's risk of IUGR, PTB, and new BPD. Additionally, formula supplementation of these neonates worsened the severity of pulmonary disease. In a separat
