The clinical and laboratory findings in 4 children with signs of malignant hyperthermia are reported. In all cases an extraordinary elevation of creatine kinase activity in serum was observed. By investigation of the creatine kinase isoenzyme activities we tried to determine the origin of creatine kinase. In contrast to other reports, creatine kinase BB derived from brain was found to be absent in all cases, although creatine kinase MM and MB showed remarkable alterations. A certificate for all patients who have survived malignant hyperthermia is suggested.

Twenty-seven consecutive cases of acute epiglottitis in children were treated by nasotracheal intubation during a 25-month period. The duration of intubation averaged 44.2 hours. No mortality or morbidity occurred. Mean hospitalization was 4.5 days. Anaesthetic techniques are discussed. Ketamine is a somewhat controversial choice for these patients as it can enhance excitement, restlessness, and accidental extubation. This study reconfirms the ease of maintaining an assured airway by nasotracheal intubation in cases of acute epiglottitis.

The gastro-intestinal flora of clinically intact piglets on an industrialised sow unit was investigated prior to weaning (n = 12) and after weaning (n = 12). The histological criteria of chronic hepatides (chronic persistent and aggressive hepatitis) and primary biliary cirrhosis are well characterized and documented in the literature. Histology forms the diagnostic basis for chronic hepatides. Diagnostic changes are seen, however, only in some cases of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and only in the early stages of the disease. Tthe findings of 150 patients with proven primary hyperparathyroidism are reported. The purpose of the analysis was to find differences between the various clinical manifestations of the disease. Furthermore the occurrence of acute hyperparathyroid crisis in our series as well as in the literature are described. 65.8% of the patients were females, 34.2% were males.
