The effect of dietary zinc status on biliary excretion of zinc, cadmium and mercury administered as a bolus of metal chloride (1 mg metal/kg body weight i.v.) was studied. Female rats were fed a purified diet containing either 9 micrograms/g (low), 45 micrograms/g (adequate) or 1150 micrograms/g (high) zinc for 8 d. Hepatic metallothionein (MT) was similar in low- and adequate-zinc groups, but was 18-fold higher in the high-zinc group than in the other two groups. The cardiac muscle proteins, myosin and actin, were purified in one step using a salicylate-silica affinity column. The affinity columns were prepared by coupling sodium salicylate via its hydroxyl group to an Altex Ultraffinity-EP column. Two respiratory mutants of the aerobic bacterium, Vitreoscilla, have been studied: a CO-resistant mutant that can grow in 50% CO-50% oxygen, and a cyanide-resistant mutant that can grow in 1 mM KCN. A comprehensive approach to the analysis of anticoagulant rodenticide residues in animal tissues based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed. Residues of warfarin, coumatetralyl, difenacoum, brodifacoum, bromadiolone, diphacinone and chlorophacinone were extracted with chloroformacetone (1:1, v/v).
