Fourteen patients with schistosomiasis of the spinal cord are described. They fall into two groups: 7 patients had clinical and computer-assisted myelographic evidence of lesions in the conus medullaris or cauda equina, or both. We report here a post-mortem examination of a 46-year-old patient who died after a 23-year-long syringomyelia-like syndrome of Tangier disease. The L5 dorsal root and the superficial peroneal nerve showed fiber loss and lipid vacuole accumulation in Schwann cell cytoplasm. The L5 ventral root had moderate fiber loss without lipid vacuoles. Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in alterations in sexual functioning. This area has been studied in depth in males; however, the literature pertaining to female sexual dysfunction after injury is sparse and focused primarily on menstruation and pregnancy. This report reviews the literature on female sexuality, menstruation and pregnancy after SCI and discusses the findings.

Barbiturate exposure during childhood was assessed from medical records of 237 children with intracranial and spinal cord tumors and 474 matched controls in a prepaid health plan. This survey is founded on 526 patients who presented with a primary tumour of the brain, spinal cord or their coverings over a seven year period. The patients resided in one of the three counties comprising South East Wales, which has a population of about 1.3 million. The cytopathic effects caused by Theiler viruses to myelinated organotypic spinal cord cultures was studied by light and electron microscopy. Heavily myelinated cultures, 2-3 weeks in vitro were infected with WW and GD VII viruses. Mock infection served as control.
