Recent studies have shown a partial similarity between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alexithymia. In this study, the authors examined the relationship between PTSD and alexithymia in two samples of 26 patients with burn injury and 27 patients with digit amputation during rehabilitation. The prevalence rates of DSM-III-R PTSD and alexithymia assessed by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) were significantly higher for injury patients than for healthy volunteers. The rate of PTSD symptoms of avoidance and emotional numbing was significantly and positively correlated with the TAS score

BACKGROUND: The experience of a neonate hospitalised in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an understandably traumatic experience for the parents, especially, for the mothers of neonates. This mental distress resulting from preterm birth and/or NICU hospitalisation can be understood as post-traumatic symptomatology, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 version. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of the admission of a neonate to the NICU (from any reason) on the development of postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of women after ces

Background: The dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (D-PTSD) was recognized in DSM-5, and a dissociative subtype of complex posttraumatic stress disorder (D-CPTSD) in ICD-11 was recently proposed. It was documented that the DSM-5 PTSD criteria encompass all symptoms of the ICD-11 CPTSD. Exploring the relationship between D-PTSD and D-CPTSD may help to clarify whether the knowledge on D-PTSD could be extended to D-CPTSD.Objective: The current study aimed to compare the symptomatic characteristics of DSM-5 D-PTSD and ICD-11 D-CPTSD.Methods: The current study re-analyzed a datab

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on the prevalence of mental disorders in adolescents in juvenile detention and correctional facilities and examine sources of heterogeneity between studies.
METHOD: Electronic databases and relevant reference lists were searched to identify surveys published from January 1966 to October 2019 that reported on the prevalence of mental disorders in unselected populations of detained adolescents. Data on the prevalence of a range of mental disorders (psychotic illnesses, major depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], conduct disorder, and post

Previous studies using probability samples have found a noticeable, but small association between violence and psychiatric disorder. In this article, we analyze data from the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) to further examine this question. Psychiatric diagnosis of survey responses was based on a modified version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. The NCS study also included items that permitted self-report of violent behaviors in the past year. People with 12-month diagnoses of anxiety disorders, dysthymia and major depression were three to four times more likely to admit

Chronic complex dissociative symptoms can be readily inquired about in the diagnostic interview leading to a clinical diagnosis of MPD in many cases. It is most useful to begin with inquiry about amnesia, autohypnotic, posttraumatic, pseudopsychotic, and passive-influence symptoms, and childhood abuse or traumatization. As this proceeds, overt dissociation is commonly noted including spontaneous trances, age-regression, blending or overlap of states, or frank switching. When this occurs, the interviewer can pursue more detailed information about the patient's experiences. Tracking these proces

BACKGROUND: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an important antecedent in the evaluation of patients with psychiatric disorders. The association between TBI and the subsequent appearance of psychiatric disorders has been documented, however, the findings found in the literature are diverse and controversial.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the most prevalent psychiatric disorders after head trauma.
DESIGN: An exploratory review (SCOPING) was carried out using the PRISMA extension protocol. Articles published between the years 2010-2022 were used to identify and describe the most prevalent psychiatric di

Emerging adulthood is the time when identity questions are addressed. It is also a time of excessive stress and risk for mental health problems. Different identity statuses relate to different mental health outcomes. Yet, little research has addressed how identity status is interlinked with trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress reactions, especially in multicultural contexts. The current study aimed to explore whether different traumatic experiences are related to the current identity status of university students aged between 18 and 29 years and investigate to what extent trauma-exposed e

OBJECTIVE: The pathology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with changes in brain structure and function, especially in the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and insula. Survivors of tragic accidents often experience psychological stress and develop post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), regardless of the diagnosis of PTSD. This study aimed to evaluate electroencephalographic changes according to PTSS in victims of a single traumatic event.
METHODS: This study enrolled 60 survivors of the Sewol ferry disaster that occurred in 2014 from Danwon High School and

UNLABELLED: Research concerning the impact of trauma history on individuals' ability to cope with subsequent events is mixed. While many studies find that trauma history increases vulnerability for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain, others reveal that there are benefits associated with moderate levels of stress (e.g. development of coping skills).
OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated whether the experience of prior traumatic stressors would serve as a risk or resilience factor based on physical and emotional outcomes among patients recovering from total k

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a polygenic disorder occurring after extreme trauma exposure. Recent studies have begun to detail the molecular biology of PTSD. However, given the array of PTSD-perturbed molecular pathways identified so far1, it is implausible that a single cell type is responsible. Here we profile the molecular responses in over two million nuclei from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of 111 human brains, collected post-mortem from individuals with and without PTSD and major depressive disorder. We identify neuronal and non-neuronal cell-type clusters, gene express

BACKGROUND: Emotional disorders (EDs), including anxiety disorders, major depression (MDD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), show overlapping symptoms and neurobiological heterogeneity, limiting current diagnostic frameworks. Transdiagnostic biomarkers are critical for precision psychiatry.
METHODS: Resting-state functional connectivity (FC) from 261 ED patients and 201 healthy controls (HCs) was decomposed via nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF). Differential FC features defined latent disease factors, classifying patients into subtypes with distinct network/structural profiles.

While body experience is a key focus of treatment in psychomotor therapy (PMT), research has largely overlooked this important topic. In this study we explored three domains of body experience-body satisfaction, body attitude, and interoceptive awareness-in individuals with mental disorders in a clinical sample receiving PMT. We expected these patients to have a more negative body experience than nonclinical controls, with PTSD, mood disorders, personality disorders, and sex negatively affecting all three domains of body experience. The study involved 235 participants aged 18-59 with various m

Objective: A parallel randomized clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for victims of terrorist attacks with long-term psychopathology. Method: 120 adult Spanish victims, who met the criteria for current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and/or anxiety disorders related to exposure to terrorist attacks that occurred 18 years ago, on average, were randomly assigned to 16 weekly sessions of TF-CBT (n = 60) or waiting list control conditions (n = 60). Results: Participants who completed TF-CBT (n = 25) ex

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was recently added to ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are frequent comorbidities, but findings regarding comorbid somatoform disorder and personality disorders remain mixed and studies with severely impaired patients are scarce. It was therefore the objective of the present study to examine comorbidities of PGD in a bereaved inpatient psychiatric sample. We assessed N = 101 bereaved inpatients in a psychiatric hospital with clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires. We calculated differences between patients with

Telehealth services are increasingly utilized to improve mental health care access for active-duty service members (ADSM) and military veterans. This article examines mental health outcomes for veterans (n = 4,536) and ADSMs (n = 378) who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition diagnostic criteria for depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder (N = 4,914) and were treated at Cohen Veterans Network Clinics using either telehealth or in-person treatment modalities. Results demonstrate small but statistically significant advantages

IMPORTANCE: DSM criteria are polythetic, allowing for heterogeneity of symptoms among individuals with the same disorder. In empirical research, most combinations were not found or only rarely found, prompting criticism of this heterogeneity.
OBJECTIVE: To elaborate how symptom-based definitions and assessments contribute to a distinct probability pattern for the occurrence of symptom combinations.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study involved a theoretical argument, simulation, and secondary data analysis of 4 preexisting datasets, each consisting of symptoms from 1

BACKGROUND: Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and alcohol/substance use disorders are prevalent among people with HIV (PWH), commonly co-occur, and predict worse HIV care outcomes. Transdiagnostic counseling approaches simultaneously address multiple co-occurring mental health disorders.
METHODS: We conducted a pilot individually randomized trial of the Common Elements Treatment Approach adapted for people with HIV (CETA-PWH), a transdiagnostic counseling intervention, compared with usual care at a large academic medical center in the southern United States. Participants were adults

BACKGROUND: Self-report measures are important in substance use assessment, yet they are susceptible to reporting errors. Urine drug screens (UDS) are often considered a more valid alternative. However, collecting in-person UDS may not always be feasible, contributing to the need to understand factors that influence the validity of self-reported substance use.
METHODS: In this secondary analysis of data from 295 women with co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders (SUD) who participated in a clinical trial testing behavioral interventions, we examined concordance and discordance between s
