Key respiratory parameters such as inhalation-to-exhalation ratio and phase durations are known to influence physiological outcomes. However, most existing respiratory guidance systems rely on frequency-driven instructions, do not evaluate whether the user's breathing follows the intended waveform, and depend on contact sensors that can cause discomfort during prolonged use. To address these limitations, we propose a millimeter-wave radar-based personalized guidance strategy driven by real-time respiratory consistency feedback. Resting and 4-7-8 breathing signals from 20 participants were used

BACKGROUND: Despite robust reports in the literature concerning the effect of exposure to combat on mental health, there is a paucity of studies in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) using a longitudinal design. This study was designed to determine the incidence of mental disorders among a cohort of NAF personnel exposed to combat and highlight its association with psychosocio-religious variables.
METHODS: It was a follow-up study using a total population sampling in which all the 290 deployed personnel participated. Data was collected at two intervals: Baseline and 6 months after with sociodemogra

Disaster-exposed adolescents face elevated risks for developing posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and maladaptive coping behaviors, including internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, the longitudinal mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear, particularly the role of intolerance of uncertainty (IU) as a potential transdiagnostic vulnerability factor. This longitudinal study examined 403 disaster-exposed adolescents (Mage = 13.33, SD = 0.52; 49.6% girls) across three waves. PTSS, IU, and IGD symptoms were assessed at three time points, with a six-month interval between each as

OBJECTIVES: Studies of unusual sensory experiences, like hallucinations, in people at risk of psychosis usually focus on auditory experiences. This study explored how common experiences across a range of sensory modalities were in people at an ultra-high risk of developing psychosis. Particular attention was paid to the number of modalities reported and their impact. It was hypothesised that people reporting a greater number of modalities of hallucinations would report greater levels of general distress, more delusional ideation, lower emotional well-being and poorer functioning. In addition,

Negative posttraumatic cognitions, or negative trauma-related thoughts and appraisals, contribute to the onset and chronicity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other comorbid conditions, like eating disorders (EDs). PTSD and EDs are highly comorbid, and negative posttraumatic cognitions are one hypothesized pathway contributing to the onset and maintenance of PTSD-ED comorbidity. Yet, there is a lack of information about the ways in which specific types of negative posttraumatic cognitions relate to ED symptoms. To address this gap in the literature, the present study used network an

IMPORTANCE: Three-quarters of sexual assault (SA) survivors meet criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 1 month after SA, and PTSD is highly comorbid with substance use disorders. Intervening early is critical to preventing the onset or escalation of these conditions.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the preliminary effectiveness of Skills Training in Affective Recovery (STAR), a brief video, and TextSTAR, a 3-week daily text message program on reducing posttraumatic stress and substance misuse symptoms among SA survivors during an SA medical forensic examination.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) frequently co-occur in youth. Integrated, trauma-focused treatments are recommended, but evidence in youth is limited and the dynamics of symptom change are poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated within-treatment changes in PTSD and substance use, and their temporal sequencing, in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing integrated treatment with supportive counselling among youth aged 13-25 years.
METHOD: Participants (n = 55) were randomised to an integrated, exposure-based treatment, Concurrent

OBJECTIVE: Chronic migraine (CM) is a condition marked by highly frequent, intense, and disabling headaches. However, less commonly examined symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, widespread non-cephalic pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder, may also play a key role in migraine-relevant clinical outcomes.
METHODS: The current study utilized retrospective clinical registry data from 704 treatment-seeking patients with CM to examine longitudinal trajectories of pain intensity and pain-related life interference using linear growth modeling.
RESULTS: High levels of co-occurring non-cephalic p

Trauma-induced sleep disturbances often persist after successful posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment. While integrated protocols combining sleep and exposure-based treatments may maximize outcomes, prior studies are limited and have largely relied on subjective sleep measures or failed to include long-term follow up assessments. Active-duty service members with PTSD (n = 82) were randomly assigned to Compressed Prolonged Exposure (CPE) treatment or Trauma Management Therapy (TMT), which integrates exposure therapy with sleep hygiene training and other skills-based interventions. This study examined the prevalence, correlates, and mental health burden of insomnia in a contemporary, nationally representative sample of 2,632 U.S. military veterans. Using established cutoffs on the Insomnia Severity Index (clinical insomnia, ≥ 15; subthreshold insomnia, 8-14), 13.6% of veterans met criteria for clinical insomnia and 29.7% for subthreshold insomnia, representing significant increases from the 11.4% and 26.0% observed in a nationally representative veteran sample surveyed in 2019-2020. Veterans with clinical and subthreshold insomnia were younger, more likely to belong to r

This study examined therapists' assessments of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and disturbances in self-organization (DSO), the additional symptom cluster that distinguishes complex PTSD (CPTSD) from PTSD in ICD-11. We investigated how these dimensions, together with patient dissociation, shape therapists' affective responses and in-session disconnection, considering both patient (CADS; observer rated) and therapist (DES; trait) dissociation. Therapists (N = 60) completed measures referring to one selected patient. Measures included PTSD and DSO symptoms, personality organizatio

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Chronic insomnia causes malaise and is associated with depression, irritability, cognitive impairment, impaired alertness, and substance abuse. Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often have both inadequate and fragmented sleep, putting them at elevated risk for these consequences. Sleep abnormalities in patients with PTSD include frequent trauma-related nightmares, prolonged sleep latency, frequent interruptions, early awakening, nighttime behavioral disorders, and disruptions of sleep cycles. Here, we review the pharmacological treatment for nightmares w

OBJECTIVE: Insomnia within the immediate aftermath of trauma is a key risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is unknown who is most at risk for insomnia after trauma, obstructing the ability to identify high-risk groups in need of early intervention. We examined whether individuals with high sleep reactivity-a trait vulnerability to sleep disturbance after stress-are vulnerable to posttrauma insomnia and subsequent PTSD.
METHOD: We recruited 88 participants hospitalized in a Level I trauma center in Detroit, MI following traumatic injury (Mage = 39.53 ± SD 14.31 yea

Mental disorders represent a critical global health challenge that affects millions around the world and significantly disrupts daily life. Early and accurate detection is paramount for timely intervention, which can lead to improved treatment outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) provides the non-invasive means for observing brain activity, making it a useful tool for detecting potential mental disorders. Recently, deep learning techniques have gained prominence for their ability to analyze complex datasets, such as electroencephalography recordings. In this study, we introduce a novel deep-

This study explores the mental health impact of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) during wartime, focusing on the prevalence and severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative symptoms among a sample of 1,511 Israeli adults exposed to the recent war. Data were collected during the third month of the Israel-Hamas war. Our findings reveal elevated clinical PTSD symptoms (36.8%) and dissociation (16.3%) across the population, including 17.8% of individuals not directly exposed to trauma who nonetheless reported PTSD symptoms above the clinical threshold. These results challe

The prevalence of treatment-resistant depression within global and military populations highlights the need for novel treatment approaches beyond monoamine neurotransmitter modulators. Buprenorphine (BUP), a semi-synthetic partial opioid agonist, is approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder and has shown promise in treating both depression and chronic pain. This case report discusses the use of transdermal BUP in treating a 36 year-old man with treatment-resistant depression with prominent anhedonia, military-related posttraumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain because of barosinusi

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic-stress disorder (PTSD) patients suffer from cognitive dysfunction and show impairments even in non-trauma-related memory. Research has focused on the relationship between associative-memory and PTSD severity due to patients' tendency to over-generalize from traumatic cues to neutral ones, leading to escalation of traumatic symptoms. In this study we aim to test to what extent inhibitory control impairments are correlated to associative-memory deficits in PTSD.
METHOD: Twenty PTSD and 22 control participants were included. Posttraumatic symptoms were assessed via a boa

Exposure to traumatic events is higher in people with severe psychiatric conditions (SPC) than those without, yet little is known about possible gender differences in the prevalence and type of trauma experienced as well as its relationship to subsequent psychological symptomatology. The present study aims to (1) examine the prevalence for both genders of trauma exposure and associated mental health outcomes in a SPC population, (2) explore possible patterns of exposure to traumatic events among men and women separately with SPC, and (3) explore the association between trauma patterns of each
