BACKGROUND: Microplastics represent ubiquitous and persistent environmental contaminants, with growing evidence of their accumulation in human tissues including the lung. Chronic pulmonary exposure has been associated with tissue damage, fibrotic remodeling, and immune dysregulation; however, a systematic understanding of the underlying multicellular dynamics and transcriptional alterations remains limited. Polyethylene is a dominant component of airborne microplastics, yet its specific pathogenic mechanisms in the lung are poorly characterized.
METHODS: We developed a rat model of chronic in

TIS21(/BTG2/PC3), orthologs of mouse, human and rat, respectively, is initially identified as one of the early growth response genes and induced by various stimulations. TIS21 belongs to antiproliferative (APRO) gene family containing the BTG-Box A (Y(50)-N(71)) and BTG-Box B (L(97)-E(115)), which are highly conserved among various species. On the other hand, it has lately been found that the expression of TIS21 is constitutive and high in thymus, lung alveolar epithelium, proximal tubule of kidney and basal cell layer of prostate acini. Potential roles of TIS21 have been suggested as transcri

Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) is one of the most important marine aquaculture species worldwide. However, with the continuous expansion of farming scale, disease outbreaks have become a major constraint to the development of the industry. Among the pathogens, Edwardsiella tarda is recognized as one of the primary causative agents. Identifying resistance-related genes and applying marker-assisted selection present promising strategies for breeding E. tarda-resistant turbot strains. In this study, two families with the highest and lowest average breeding values were selected as resistant and sus

BACKGROUND: The widely accepted "multi-hit hypothesis" of IgAN pathogenesis was challenged, as efficient depletion of CD20+ B cells failed to reduce serum galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) or proteinuria in IgAN patients. Our group has discovered glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) as another source of IgA, while immunoglobulin produced by non-B cells (non-B Ig) participating in several inflammatory and neoplastic diseases arose as a new concept in immunology. It is still unclear whether IgA produced by GMCs participates in the pathogenesis of IgAN and what its preliminary mechanism is.

Clonality testing for rearrangements in the complementarity-determining region 3 of the immunoglobulin heavy chain of B lymphocytes (B cell receptor) and the T cell receptor of T lymphocytes helps distinguish between clonal and non-clonal expansions of lymphocytes. There are rare reports of clonally rearranged T and B cell receptors in dogs with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Our objective was to determine the frequency of clonally rearranged T and B cell receptors in dogs with AML. Archived slides from historical cases of AML (from January 2010 to June 2013) and slides or liquid specimens [blo

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a heterogeneous disease with autosomal dominant Mendelian inheritance. In 1989, the 1st locus for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was mapped to cardiac myosin genes located on chromosome 14q1. Soon, several mutations that cosegregated with inheritance of the disease were identified in the beta-myosin heavy chain gene, or MHY7. More than 30 missense mutations and 1 deletion mutation in the beta-myosin heavy chain gene have since been described. Recently, expression of both the mutant beta-myosin heavy chain mRNA and the mutant protein has been shown in the cardiac and

BACKGROUND: The histology of benign disease of the human prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is heterogeneous. No other species demonstrates the same complexity, and current animal models do not appear to fully encompass the stromal and epithelial developmental changes involved in the human disease. This study describes age-related changes in the prostatic smooth muscle stroma of guinea pigs and humans, which may be pertinent to some aspects of the disease process in humans.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Histologic and ultrastructural changes were examined and measured in the prostates of guinea p

BACKGROUND: Primary cheiloplasty is the first definitive surgical intervention for infants with cleft lip and plays a central role in establishing the foundation of postoperative nasolabial morphology. Because the early configuration of the lip and nose can influence long-term facial harmony, achieving an anatomically favorable morphology at the time of initial surgery is an important clinical objective. At our institution, primary cheiloplasty is performed using the Cronin method in combination with nasal vestibular expansion (NVE), a technique designed to improve symmetry by simultaneously r

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin with a high degree of malignancy and easy metastasis. It mostly occurs in distal extremities or adjacent joints, and it is most common in deep knee joint. Primary sacral synovial sarcoma (PSSS) is extremely rare. The PET/CT imaging findings of a case of monophasic PSSS were reported. The clinical, imaging, and pathological data were summarized, and the literature was reviewed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 67-year-old female patient presented with sacrococcygeal pain without obvious causes on 16 September 2022, with occasional pain

UNLABELLED: Gut bacteria belonging to the Clostridium family play a pivotal role in regulating host energy balance and metabolic homeostasis. As a commensal bacterium, Clostridium sporogenes has been implicated in modulating host energy homeostasis, albeit the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of C. sporogenes supplementation on various physiological parameters, intestinal morphology, particularly adipose tissue accumulation, and glucolipid metabolism in mice. The findings reveal that mice supplemented with C. sporogenes for 6 weeks exh

RATIONALE: ALL is the most common form of leukemia (75% to 80%), it is characterized by clonal expansion of the lymphoid blasts in bone marrow, blood, and other tissues, which can be divided into T lineage and B lineage. Although relapse of acute leukemia is common, a change of immunophenotype at relapse only occurs rarely. Some of these cases have been labeled "lineage switch".
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old man had multiple lymph nodes in the neck, and the lymph nodes on the right side adhered to the surrounding tissues. His lymphocytes ratio in blood was up to 86.3%. Flow cytometry of the

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a heterogeneous population of antigen-presenting cells (APCs) identified in various tissues, including the skin (Langerhans cells), lymph nodes (interdigitating and follicular DCs), spleen, and thymus. Properties of DCs include the ability to (1) capture, process, and present foreign antigens; (2) migrate to lymphoid-rich tissue; and (3) stimulate innate and adaptive antigen-specific immune responses. Until recently, the ability to study DCs has been limited by their absence in most culture systems. It is now known that specific cytokines can be used to expand DCs to

The previously suggested concept of the closest growth relations existing between the bony and the nervous tissue at the organ level of the spinal cord and the peripheral (including the facial) nervous trunks is experimentally buttressed. It is shown that the normal gross-morphological features of the vertebrae as well as of the tubular bones (viz., their length, physiological curvatures and terminal expansions) result from the adaptation of the bone growth to the slower proceeding and vulnerable neural extensive growth, viz., from a physiological osteo-neural growth disproportion. The more or

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), and aquaporin-4 antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4 + NMOSD) are inflammatory demyelinating disorders with distinct mechanisms of tissue injury. MS is characterized by diffuse neurodegeneration, whereas damage in antibody-mediated diseases is considered attack related. In MOGAD, the relationship between disease activity and brain atrophy remains unclear. We aimed to compare longitudinal trajectories of global and regional brain atrophy across M

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Antitumour immunity involves a complex balance of immune effectors and regulators, many of which are adapted or compartmentalised within the local microenvironment. How this influences responses to immunotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is poorly understood because of limited access to the tumour immune landscape. We postulated that fine needle aspirates (FNA) could allow for minimally invasive, in-depth tumour immune profiling in patients with advanced HCC.
METHODS: Patients with radiological evidence of advanced HCC were prospectively enrolled to provide matched

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) represent an innate immune cell population comprised of immature myeloid cells and myeloid progenitors with very potent immunosuppressive potential. MDSCs are reported to be abundant in the lungs of active tuberculosis (TB) patients. We sought to perform an in-depth study of MDSCs during latent TB infection (LTBI) and active TB (ATB) using the nonhuman primate (NHP) model of pulmonary TB. We found a higher proportion of granulocytic, polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSCs) in the lungs of ATB animals compared to those with LTBI or

The intrusion of the secondary vector Rhodnius pallescens into urban and peri-urban environments in Colombia poses an emerging risk for Chagas disease transmission, compounded by rising insecticide resistance. Developing novel control strategies requires the identification of stable gut symbionts; however, high-resolution microbial profiles for urban-intruding vector populations remain poorly defined. To characterize the intestinal microbiome and identify candidate taxa for paratransgenesis, we generated high-resolution taxonomic composition and predicted functional profiles using 16S rRNA amp

Despite extensive technological advances and an ever-growing body of literature, liquid biopsy has yet to achieve reliable early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA). Numerous studies have investigated circulating tumor-derived components, including cell-free DNA (cfDNA), cell-free RNA (cfRNA), extracellular vesicles (EVs), and circulating tumor cells (CTCs), primarily using peripheral blood samples; however, their clinical utility for early-stage disease remains limited. The fundamental obstacles are biological rather than purely technical: early PDA and its precursor lesions,
