The antiphospholipid syndrome has rarely been described in patients with autoimmune hepatitis. Two cases with type I autoimmune hepatitis and antiphospholipid syndrome are presented. The first case is that of a 53-year-old Caucasian female with a history of arterial thrombosis and fetal loss who was submitted to clinical and laboratory testing due to persistent transaminasaemia and was found to have autoimmune hepatitis. METHODS: An animal model of sepsis in rats was established by administering endotoxin into the peritoneal cavity. The prevalence of hepatitis G virus (HGV)-RNA and HGV-E2 antibodies was studied in a cohort of Dutch hemophilia patients in relation to clotting products used, age, and coinfection with hepatitis C. BACKGROUND: Different conditions are associated with a prolonged cholestatic jaundice in the neonatal period: viral hepatitis, biliary atresia and choledocal cyst are the most frequent causes. Laboratory findings are necessary, although they do not permit an etiologic diagnosis in all cases. BACKGROUND: Mortality after hepatectomy in rats increases markedly beyond the classic 2/3 resection from which complete recovery is the rule. We have recently observed that S-(2-hydroxyethylmercapto)-L-cysteine (L-CySSME), the mixed disulfide of L-cysteine and 2-mercaptoethanol, prevented cataracts induced in mice by acetaminophen (ACP) by functioning as a prodrug of L-cysteine and protecting the liver. This prompted the evaluation of the more lipophilic N-acetyl (Ac-CySSME) and ethyl ester (Et-CySSME) derivatives of L-CySSME as proprodrug forms, as well as the "D" enantiomer, as hepatoprotective agents. In 1993, 80 patients (43 female and 37 male) with tick-borne encephalitis were hospitalized in Clinic of Neuroinfections and Parasitic Diseases of Medical School in Białystok. 6 (7.5%) patients were jaundiced, 16 (20%) had hepatomegaly. We noticed increased enzymatic activity of aspartate aminotransferase (x = 74.5 U/l) in 9 (11.25%) cases, alanine aminotransferase (x = 89.5 U/l) in 11 (13.75%) cases, increased level of bilirubin in blood (from 1.4 to 3.5 mg/dl) in 7 (8.75%) cases. A study was carried out on 1,028 voluntary blood donors to see how body mass index (BMI) correlated with the serum alanine amino transferase (ALT) activity. The mean ALT (U/l) values were 19.35, 27.63, 40.79 and 54.41 in the four BMI categories of < or = 20, 20.1-25, 25.1-30 and > 30, respectively. The functional and structural changes in the liver of white rats both low- and high-resistant to hypoxia, have been studied using the biochemical and morphological methods. It has been found that intensity and degree of the liver injury in experimental toxic hepatitis depend on the systemic resistance to hypoxia. The functional and morphological changes in the injured liver have been found to be less pronounced in the high-resistant rats as compared with those in the low-resistant animals.

To evaluate the clinical applications of serum thymidine kinase (TK) activity, we compared the results obtained with this parameter with those of other liver function tests in 27 patients with acute viral hepatitis and 16 normal controls. In those in the acute stage, the serum TK activity increased significantly to 55.5 +/- 66.5 U/L.
