"I Still Feel Like I Am Not Normal": A Review of the Role of Stigma and Stigmatization Among Female Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse, Sexual Assault, and Intimate Partner Violence.

Child sexual abuse (CSA), sexual assault (SA), and intimate partner violence (IPV) occur within social contexts that shape how survivors judge themselves and are evaluated by others. Because these are gendered sexual and intimate crimes that violate social norms about what is appropriate and acceptable, survivors may experience stigma that includes victim-blaming messages from the broader society as well as specific stigmatizing reactions from others in response to disclosure; this stigmatization can be internalized among survivors as self-blame, shame, and anticipatory stigma. Stigma and stig…

"Family shame should not be made public": witnessing parental intimate partner violence and depressive symptom among Chinese college students -- the mediating role of brooding and the moderating role of resilience.

BACKGROUND: While Western research has consistently linked witnessing parental intimate partner violence (IPV) to elevated risks of depressive symptom among adolescents and young adults, the cognitive-emotional mechanisms underlying this association remain insufficiently understood within the Chinese cultural context. Witnessing parental IPV may represent not only a family-based traumatic experience but also a process through which enduring cognitive vulnerabilities become internalized within sociocultural environments. Although such culturally embedded schema-related vulnerabilities are not d…

An audit to detect gender-based violence victim-survivors and to improve their referral care pathways in a primary care clinic's emergency centre in Cape Town, South Africa: A narrative report.

BACKGROUND: South Africa's population experiences high rates of gender-based violence (GBV), with primary care emergency centres (ECs) often being the first point of contact for victim-survivors of violence. The ability of these centres' staff to identify survivors of abuse plays a critical role in connecting them to a multidisciplinary network of support services. During 2025, a medical intern expressed his frustration with a community health centre's lack of readily available guides to refer GBV victim-survivors for psychosocial support. Once, it was established that his perception was share…

Effectiveness of the hope groups intervention on mental health, parenting practices, and violence against children among Ukrainian parents and caregivers affected by war and displacement: a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Almost two-thirds of the world's children live in conflict-affected countries, including Ukraine, where two-thirds of children were displaced after Russia's 2022 invasion. To address the urgent need for effective approaches to support parents and protect children in war, we designed Hope Groups-a group-based mental health, parenting, and violence prevention intervention-and used a cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) to evaluate its effectiveness. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm, parallel cRCT comprising K = 90 clusters and N = 510 parents/caregivers, who were internally dis…

Church-based problem-solving therapy for adolescent girls and young women with a history of gender-based violence in Zambia: study protocol for a hybrid type 1 randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa face a disproportionate burden of gender-based violence (GBV), HIV risk, and mental health challenges. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of psychological interventions such as problem-solving therapy (PST), there is limited evidence on culturally adapted models for GBV-exposed AGYW that concurrently address HIV and mental health, particularly in settings with constrained mental health infrastructure. OBJECTIVE: This study outlines the protocol for a randomized controlled trial evaluating Mpata Yathu, a church-based…

Evaluation of 24-Month Effects of the Close to Home Program on Youth Sexual and Dating Violence Across 22 Communities in California: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Cluster-Matched Control Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence (SV; any sexual activity where consent is not obtained or freely given) and dating violence (DV; abuse or aggression that occurs in a romantic relationship among youth) are interrelated public health concerns among youth in the United States. Despite its urgency, there is a dearth of comprehensive SV and DV prevention approaches that intervene across multiple social ecology levels (ie, at the individual, interpersonal, community, and societal levels). Therefore, the field of violence prevention has called for the development and evaluation of community-level interve…

Patterns of violence exposure in a life-course perspective and associations to mental and physical health problems and health-related risk behaviors among women and men in Sweden: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individual histories of abuse characteristics and other adversities must be considered to understand poly-victimization and its impact on ill-health, which suggests the importance of understanding how experiences of violence are interconnected over a life-course. OBJECTIVE: To explore gendered patterns of lifetime poly-victimization-physical, emotional, and sexual-and examine how distinct exposure profiles relate to adult health outcomes. The analysis is guided by the Trauma-Informed Theory of Individual Health Behavior (TTB) framework to deepen understanding of gendered trauma tr…

The social, cultural, and health context of controlling behavior and emotional intimate partner violence among adolescent girls and young women living with human immunodeficiency virus in Uganda: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Many adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) report intimate partner violence (IPV), including emotional IPV and controlling behavior. Yet, few studies have examined the association between these forms of IPV and health outcomes among AGYW living with HIV. OBJECTIVES: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study to understand the contexts in which controlling behavior and emotional IPV might impact the health of AGYW living with HIV in Uganda. DESIGN: We used a participatory action research design involving community stakeholders (h…

Understanding the effect of gender-based violence on uptake and utilisation of HIV prevention, treatment, and care services among transgender women: a qualitative study in the greater Kampala metropolitan area, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Transwomen (also known as transgender women) are disproportionately affected by all forms of gender-based violence (GBV). The high prevalence of physical, sexual and emotional violence not only predisposes transwomen to HIV infection but also limits the uptake/access to HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Despite the high prevalence of HIV infection and GBV among transwomen, there is limited evidence on how GBV affects the uptake and utilisation of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Therefore, this qualitative study explored how GBV affects uptake and utilisati…

The impacts of combined social and economic empowerment training on intimate partner violence, depression, gender norms and livelihoods among women: an individually randomised controlled trial and qualitative study in Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION: We assessed whether the Women for Women International (WfWI) economic and social empowerment programme could reduce women's experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and depression in Afghanistan. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm individually randomised controlled trial in six urban and peri-urban communities. Communities were selected by WfWI for being conflict affected and showing signs of economic vulnerability (eg, little or no education, living in extreme poverty). Individual eligibility were female, aged 18-49, able to consent to participate and one woman per household…

Prevalence and risk factors of physical or sexual intimate violence perpetration amongst men in four districts in the central region of Ghana: Baseline findings from a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based interventions are essential in the prevention of violence against women (VAW). An understanding of risk factors for male perpetration of VAW using population-based research is crucial for developing such interventions. This study is a baseline assessment of a two-arm unmatched cluster randomised controlled trial (C-RCT), set up to assess the impact of a Rural Response System (RRS) intervention for preventing violence against women and girls in Ghana. This study aims at assessing past year prevalence and risk factors for sexual or physical intimate partner violence (I…

Sensitive and tolerant raters differ in their magnitude estimates of extremely violent behaviors.

A 2007 study indicated severity of violence of several behaviors can be rated consistently, such that an individual's average rating across the behaviors can serve as a measure of sensitivity to violence. However, violence-sensitive and violence-tolerant raters in that study gave similar high scale ratings of severity of violence for extremely violent behaviors such as murder and stabbing. In the present study an open-ended magnitude estimation response scale was used by 27 participants to examine impressions of the severity of violence of 38 behaviors. There was a positive correlation between…

Dissociative Symptoms in Women with Histories of Intimate Partner Victimization: A Focus on Coercive Control.

Identifying and contrasting different patterns of intimate partner violence (IPV) (e.g. situational couple violence, coercive controlling violence) is useful for understanding IPV and its connections with health. Applying this approach to dissociation may be fruitful, given theoretical perspectives that predict a specific connection between coercive controlling violence and dissociative symptoms. To address this, community women with divorce histories (N = 188) completed measures to identify patterns of IPV victimization in prior relationships (no direct violence, situational couple violence, …
