A comparative study of the anorectic and behavioral effects of fenproporex on male and female rats.

The anorectic and behavioral effects of fenproporex (Fenp, 10 mg/kg, ip) and methamphetamine (Met, 2.5 mg/kg, ip), a prototypical example of an amphetamine-like drug, were studied in male and female Wistar rats (5 and 3 months of age, respectively, at the beginning of the experiments) after acute (immediately after a single dose) or chronic treatment (after 60 days of administration). For the evaluation of the experimental parameters six groups of eight rats each were utilized for food intake and stereotyped behavior and six groups of nine rats each for body weight and motor activity. Similar …

Interest in Long-Acting PrEP by Methamphetamine Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Four Western US Cities.

Methamphetamine use is a driver of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and is associated with suboptimal adherence to daily, oral PrEP. Long-acting PrEP may be a promising alternative. We analyzed data from the 2023 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance survey in four western cities to assess interest in long-acting PrEP among HIV-negative MSM participants. Of 1,450 participants, 7% used methamphetamine in the past 12 months. Two-thirds were interested in long-acting PrEP (68%); with no difference in interest (χ2 = 1.4, p = 0.24) or prior PrEP use (χ2 = 0.56, p = 0.46) by methamphetamine …

Provider Perspectives on the Delivery of Long-Acting PrEP for HIV Prevention to Men Who Have Sex with Men and Who Use Methamphetamine.

Methamphetamine use is associated with HIV risk behaviors, seroconversion, and suboptimal daily, oral PrEP adherence among men who have sex with men (MSM). Long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) formulations, such as bimonthly cabotegravir (CAB) and biannual lenacapavir (LEN) injections, may be particularly effective for HIV prevention in this population. We conducted interviews with 17 individuals in the western US who provided a service in the past month to an HIV-negative man who has sex with men and uses methamphetamine. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Interviews inqui…

The Impact of Childhood Maltreatment Experiences on Emotion Regulation in Chinese Methamphetamine-Dependent Inpatients: A Mediation Model.

Childhood maltreatment increases the risk of drug dependency by affecting emotion regulation. However, the relationship between childhood maltreatment, emotion regulation, rumination and impulsive behaviour remains unclear. This study examined the mediating role of rumination and impulsivity in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and emotion regulation among methamphetamine-dependent inpatients (MDIs). A total of 592 male MDIs were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Participants provided sociodemographic information and completed assessments using the Childhood Trauma Questi…

Unmet needs and harm reduction preferences of syringe services program participants: differences by co-use of illicit opioids and methamphetamine.

BACKGROUND: The current fourth wave of the United States opioid overdose epidemic is characterized by the co-use of opioids and stimulants, including illicit opioids and methamphetamine. The co-use of these two drugs, known as "goofballing," is associated with higher risk for several adverse outcomes, including more frequent injections, greater health risks, and higher morbidity. Considering these differences, this unique subpopulation of people who inject drugs (PWID) may also have unique unmet needs and harm reduction preferences. METHODS: We collected self-reported data from participants (…

Assessment of resting cerebral perfusion between methamphetamine-associated psychosis and schizophrenia through arterial spin labeling MRI.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical manifestations of methamphetamine (METH)-associated psychosis (MAP) and acute paranoid schizophrenia (SCZ) are similar. This study aims to assess regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in individuals who use METH and in those with SCZ using the MRI arterial spin labeling (ASL) technique. METHODS: We prospectively recruited 68 participants and divided them into four groups: MAP (N = 15), SCZ (N = 13), METH users with no psychosis (MNP; N = 22), and normal healthy controls (CRL; N = 18). We measured rCBF using an MRI three-dimensional pseudo-continuous ASL sequence. Clinica…

Heavy Alcohol Use Among Migrant and Non-Migrant Male Sex Workers in Thailand: A Neglected HIV/STI Vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: There is scarce research on male sex workers in the context of alcohol use. While heavy alcohol use has been established as a risk factor for HIV and STI infections among men who have sex with men (MSM), men who engage in sex work with other men, particularly from the Global South, have not been included in these studies. Moreover, studies among male sex workers in Asia often do not explore migration contexts of these men. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this exploratory study is to examine the prevalence and correlates of heavy alcohol use among migrant and non-migrant male sex work

Increased Methamphetamine Use among Persons Who Inject Drugs in Hai Phong, Vietnam, and the Association with Injection and Sexual Risk Behaviors.

Methamphetamine use has increased significantly in Southeast Asia in the last 5-10 years, but there is little research on risk behaviors associated with the increase in this region. We evaluate injection and sexual risk behaviors associated with current methamphetamine use among heterosexual persons who inject drugs (PWID) in Hai Phong, Vietnam. We recruited 1336 PWID and assessed associations between methamphetamine use, injection and sexual risk behaviors, stratified by HIV serostatus. There were several statistically significant associations between methamphetamine use and sexual risk behav…

Withdrawal from chronic treatment with methamphetamine induces anxiety and depression-like behavior in mice.

Methamphetamine (METH) is an illicit psychostimulant that is widely abused. After producing extreme pleasure, METH abuse leads to negative emotional states during withdrawal in clinical survey. However, the mood behavioral consequences of withdrawal from chronic METH exposure in animal experiments and related mechanisms have not been clarified yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the anxiety and depression-like phenotype in mice induced by withdrawal from chronic METH treatment and the potential molecular mechanism. We found that withdrawal from chronic METH treatment increased the im…

Intervention Effect of Repetitive TMS on Behavioral Adjustment After Error Commission in Long-Term Methamphetamine Addicts: Evidence From a Two-Choice Oddball Task.

Behavioral adjustment plays an important role in the treatment and relapse of drug addiction. Nonetheless, few studies have examined behavioral adjustment and its plasticity following error commission in methamphetamine (METH) dependence, which is detrimental to human health. Thus, we investigated the behavioral adjustment performance following error commission in long-term METH addicts and how it varied with the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Twenty-nine male long-term METH addicts (for > 3 years) were ran…

Investigating the microstructural and neurochemical environment within the basal ganglia of current methamphetamine abusers.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine is a highly addictive psychostimulant and the medical, social, and economic consequences associated with its use have become a major international problem. Current evidence has shown methamphetamine to be particularly neurotoxic to dopamine neurons and striatal structures within the basal ganglia. A previous study from our laboratory demonstrated larger putamen volumes in actively using methamphetamine-dependent participants. The purpose of this current study was to determine whether striatal structures in the same sample of participants also exhibit pathology on th…

Factors related to psychosocial barriers to drug treatment among Chinese drug users.

Although substance abuse treatment has been considerably scaled up in China, impediments to accessing these services remain among drug users. The authors examine the primary psychosocial barriers to drug treatment in this population and evaluate factors associated with these barriers. Barriers to accessing drug treatment were measured using the Barriers to Treatment Inventory (BTI). A Structural Equation Model was used to examine whether the internal barriers were associated with treatment history and frequent methamphetamine use as well as how demographic characteristics influence such barrie…

The prevalence of marijuana in suspected impaired driving cases in Washington state.

In December 2012, the possession and private use of limited quantities of marijuana and marijuana products became legal in the state of Washington. At the same time, the state's driving under the influence statutes were amended to include a per se level of 5 ng/mL delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in whole blood for drivers aged 21 years and older. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of marijuana legalization on the prevalence of marijuana in suspected impaired driving cases. The prevalence of both active THC and its metabolite carboxy-THC detected in such cases pre-legalization w

Methamphetamine use in a nationwide online sample of older Australian HIV-positive and HIV-negative gay men.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Use of methamphetamine appears to be greater among gay men than in the general population, yet little data are available on factors associated with use, especially among older men. This study identifies factors associated with reported methamphetamine use among older Australian gay men. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were collected from an online survey involving 1135 HIV-positive and HIV-negative gay-identified men aged 40 years and older. RESULTS: One in eight men in the sample, or 13%, reported using methamphetamine in the past 12 months. Patterns of reported use were sim…

Broadband neurophysiological abnormalities in the medial prefrontal region of the default-mode network in adults with ADHD.

Previous investigations of the default-mode network (DMN) in persons with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have shown reduced functional connectivity between the anterior and posterior aspects. This finding was originally demonstrated in adults with ADHD, then in youth with ADHD, and has been tentatively linked to ultra low frequency oscillations within the DMN. The current study evaluates the specificity of DMN abnormalities to neuronal oscillations in the ultra low frequency range, and examines the regional specificity of these DMN aberrations in medicated and unmedicated adul

MeCP2 and drug addiction.

Two studies in this issue show that the protein MeCP2, which is implicated in Rett syndrome, also critically regulates behavioral responses to psychostimulants. Although the two studies highlight different mechanisms of MeCP2 in regulating these behaviors, both underscore the importance of epigenetic mechanisms in establishing drug addiction.

Longitudinal changes in drug use severity and physical health-related quality of life among untreated stimulant users.

The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether drug use severity is associated with physical health-related quality of life (HRQL) over time. Data are from a longitudinal, multi-state, natural history community study of users of cocaine and/or methamphetamine who were interviewed at 6-month intervals over 2 years with a 79% follow-up participation rate. Physical HRQL was assessed with the physical component summary (PCS) of the SF-8 Health Survey and drug, alcohol, and psychiatric severity were all assessed with the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). Random coefficient regression …
