A comparison of remedial, failure, and successful secondary school students across self-perception and past and present school performance variables.

Three groups of Grades 9-10 adolescents were compared across a combination of self-perception and school performance variables (past and present). The three groups studied were (1) students in remedial math and English classes (Remedials), (2) unsuccessful regular-stream students failing three or more subjects (Failures), and (3) successful regular-stream students failing no more than one course (Controls). The sample of 96 students was predominantly female, and subjects were enrolled in a general nonuniversity preparatory program at a commercial high school in an inner-city working-class dist

Associated predictors of functional impairment among adolescents with ADHD-a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescence is associated with functional impairment in several domains of life. To enable development of interventions that more effectively target functional impairment in this age group, the associations between clinical characteristics and impairment need to be clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between ADHD and functional impairment, if they varied by sex, and the potential impact of comorbid psychiatric symptoms on the associations. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study including adolesc

ADHD symptoms and learning difficulties: co-occurrence and directionality from Grades 1 to 9.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of learning difficulties. This association may reflect shared risk factors, ADHD symptoms hindering learning, or learning difficulties increasing ADHD symptoms. We aimed to map rates of co-occurrence among ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and reading comprehension difficulties and to investigate directional influences between ADHD symptoms and reading fluency, arithmetic, and reading comprehension. METHODS: Reading fluency, arithmetic, and reading comprehension were assessed longitudinally in approxima

Effects associated with on- and off-label stimulant treatment of core autism and ADHD symptoms exhibited by children with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Families of children with autism spectrum disorder are barraged by different treatment options. Some of these options have the support of empirical evidence while others do not. Stimulant treatments are typically utilized to treat symptoms of ADHD indicating an on-label use of such treatment. METHODS: This study examines the association of stimulant treatment with the on- (symptoms of ADHD) and off- (symptoms of ASD) label symptoms among children with ASD via a non-clinical, population-based sample. RESULTS: Results indicate no significant association of stimulant treatment with a

Congenital TORCH Infections and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Congenital TORCH (toxoplasmosis, syphilis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, or herpes simplex) infections are established causes of severe fetal injury, yet their population-level contribution to neurodevelopmental and psychiatric outcomes, independent of familial confounding, remains yet to be quantified. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether congenital TORCH infections are associated with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric outcomes, including autism and intellectual disability, as well as academic performance, using population-based and sibling-controlled analyses. Association of betel quid chewing with specific major psychiatric disorders in Taiwan Biobank-NHIRD linked data.

AIMS: Betel quid chewing (BQC) is a common psychoactive habit in Taiwan and other Asian regions. Evidence regarding its association with specific psychiatric disorders remains limited. This study examined associations between BQC assessed at Taiwan Biobank enrolment and major psychiatric disorders recorded in linked health-insurance claims data. METHODS: We analysed 51,522 male participants from the Taiwan Biobank successfully linked to the National Health Insurance Research Database, including 7,973 ever-users (BQC) and 43,549 never-users of betel quid (non-BQC). Psychiatric disorders includ

Attention unleashed: Creative therapy for thoughtful transformation.

Various factors-motivation, interest, fatigue, and external stimuli-influence creative mental processes and attention control (AC). Creative thinking (CT) relies on AC and involves coordinated neural networks and pathways. The cognitive function of AC requires the capacity to direct attention toward distinct features of the environment or internal thoughts. Such selectivity is a key to limiting distractions, preserving focus, and assimilating the essential information needed for CT. Despite progress in creativity research, characterization of underlying neural mechanisms remains limited. To ad

Paternal age at childbearing and offspring psychiatric and academic morbidity.

IMPORTANCE: Advancing paternal age is associated with increased genetic mutations during spermatogenesis, which research suggests may cause psychiatric morbidity in the offspring. The effects of advancing paternal age at childbearing on offspring morbidity remain unclear, however, because of inconsistent epidemiologic findings and the inability of previous studies to rigorously rule out confounding factors. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between advancing paternal age at childbearing and numerous indexes of offspring morbidity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a popula

Aberrant Structural Brain Connectivity in Adolescents with Attentional Problems Who Were Born Prematurely.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Differences in structural brain connectivity that underlie inattention have been previously investigated in adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, but not in the context of premature birth, which is often associated with attentional problems. The purpose of this study was to identify the neural correlates of attentional problems in adolescents born prematurely and determine neonatal predictors of those neural correlates and attention problems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 24 adolescents (12.5 ± 1.8 years of age; 12 girls, 12 boys) who w

Epidemiology and extracutaneous comorbidities of severe acne in adolescence: a U.S. population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the epidemiology of severe acne in the U.S. OBJECTIVES: We sought to study the U.S. prevalence, determinants and comorbidities of severe acne in adolescence. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study of 9417 children ages 0-17 years. Prevalence of severe acne, demographics and comorbid disorders were determined. RESULTS: The U.S. prevalence of severe acne was virtually nil in the first decade of life, but increased in a linear fashion from 11 years [1·7% (95% confidence interval (CI

Greater genetic risk for adult psychiatric diseases increases vulnerability to adverse outcome after preterm birth.

Preterm birth is an extreme environmental stress associated with an increased risk of later cognitive dysfunction and mental health problems. However, the extent to which preterm birth is modulated by genetic variation remains largely unclear. Here, we test for an interaction effect between psychiatric polygenic risk and gestational age at birth on cognition at age four. Our sample comprises 4934 unrelated individuals (2066 individuals born < 37 weeks, 918 born <  = 34 weeks). Genome-wide polygenic scores (GPS's) were calculated for each individual for five different psychiatric pathologies: S

The predictors of persistent DSM-IV disorders in 3-year follow-ups of the British Child and Adolescent Mental Health Surveys 1999 and 2004.

BACKGROUND: The identification of the factors that influence the persistence of psychiatric disorder may assist practitioners to focus on young people who are particularly prone to poor outcomes, but population-based samples of sufficient size are rare. METHOD: This secondary analysis combined data from two large, population-based cross-sectional surveys in Great Britain (1999 and 2004) and their respective follow-ups (2002 and 2007), to study homotypic persistence among the 998 school-age children with psychiatric disorder at baseline. Psychiatric disorder was measured using the Development

Classification of behavior disorders in adolescence: scaling methods, predictive validity, and gender differences.

The present study examined issues relating to the measurement and discriminant validity of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria for behavior disorders in adolescence (conduct disorder [CD], oppositional defiant disorder [ODD], attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]). Data were obtained from a birth cohort of 995 New Zealand-born individuals studied to the age of 25 years and modeled associations between behavior disorder from ages 14 to 16 years and later outcomes including crime, substance use, mental health, parenthood and partnership outco

Out of focus - Brain attention control deficits in adult ADHD.

Modern environments are full of information, and place high demands on the attention control mechanisms that allow the selection of information from one (focused attention) or multiple (divided attention) sources, react to changes in a given situation (stimulus-driven attention), and allocate effort according to demands (task-positive and task-negative activity). We aimed to reveal how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects the brain functions associated with these attention control processes in constantly demanding tasks. Sixteen adults with ADHD and 17 controls performed ada

Relationship of prenatal maternal obesity and diabetes to offspring neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders: a narrative review.

Obesity and diabetes is a worldwide public health problem among women of reproductive age. This narrative review highlights recent epidemiological studies regarding associations of maternal obesity and diabetes with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in offspring, and provides an overview of plausible underlying mechanisms and challenges for future human studies. A comprehensive search strategy selected terms that corresponded to the domains of interest (maternal obesity, different types of diabetes, offspring cognitive functions and neuropsychiatric disorders). The databases searche

Unique versus shared associations between self-reported behavioral addictions and substance use disorders and mental health problems: A commonality analysis in a large sample of young Swiss men.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Behavioral addictions (BAs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) tend to co-occur; both are associated with mental health problems (MHPs). This study aimed to estimate the proportion of variance in the severity of MHPs explained by BAs and SUDs, individually and shared between addictions. METHODS: A sample of 5,516 young Swiss men (mean = 25.47 years old; SD = 1.26) completed a self-reporting questionnaire assessing alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco use disorders, illicit drug use other than cannabis, six BAs (Internet, gaming, smartphone, Internet sex, gambling, and work) and

Analysis of the effects of task preferences, task demands, and adult attention on child behavior in outpatient and classroom settings.

Two studies were conducted with children who displayed behavior problems to evaluate the effects of task preference, task demands, and adult attention on child behavior. In Study 1, we conducted brief functional analyses in an outpatient clinic to identify variables that facilitated appropriate behavior. For 8 of 10 children, distinct patterns of performance occurred; 3 children displayed improved behavior with changes in task demands, 1 child displayed improved behavior with a preferred task, and 4 children displayed improved behavior with changes in adult attention. In most cases, the childr

Distinct regions of the cerebellum show gray matter decreases in autism, ADHD, and developmental dyslexia.

Differences in cerebellar structure have been identified in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and developmental dyslexia. However, it is not clear if different cerebellar regions are involved in each disorder, and thus whether cerebellar anatomical differences reflect a generic developmental vulnerability or disorder-specific characteristics. To clarify this, we conducted an anatomic likelihood estimate (ALE) meta-analysis on voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies which compared ASD (17 studies), ADHD (10 studies), and dyslexic (10 studies) partici
