Epidemiological considerations in the role of dendritic/Langerhans cells in human cancer.

The roles of dendritic or Langerhans cells in human neoplasia have been studied in animal models and human subjects for some years. Much has already been learned concerning the operative immunological processes, relationships with other components of the reticuloendothelial system, and correlations with genetics and the aging process. Unfortunately, the present requirement for microscopic examination of human tissues to assay these cells greatly limits the types of study which can be under-taken and their scope. Investigations must presently be limited to human cancers occurring in readily acc

Induction of autoantibodies to human enzymes following viral infection: a biologically relevant hypothesis.

Macro enzymes, i.e. complexes of normal (iso-)enzymes with an immunoglobulin, may be due to immunological cross-reactions evoked by specific viral antigenic determinants that are homologous to regions in the target enzymes. A search of the National Biomedical Research Foundation protein databank with the amino-acid sequence of human pancreatic amylase revealed a marked homology with a fragment of the yellow fever virus major envelope protein E: i.e. an overall identity of 19.7 per cent and a high degree (40.9 per cent) of conservative amino-acid substitutions over 119 amino acids. At each iden

Association of Social Determinants of Health with Pediatric Asthma Hospitalization after Treatment in the Emergency Department.

Biomedical and non-biomedical factors influence outcomes for children with asthma exacerbations in emergency department (ED) settings. Modeling these factors may advance our understanding of drivers of health disparities, which will inform interventions to decrease them. Our aim is to quantify the association of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) with hospitalization of children with acute asthma. This retrospective cross-sectional study examined all children 2-17 years old who visited a Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) Registry site for acute asthma over four years.

Fatherhood and men's participation across diverse antenatal care systems in rural Eastern Zimbabwe: A qualitative study.

Men's participation in antenatal care (ANC) is widely seen as essential for improving access, uptake, and pregnancy outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the region with the world's highest maternal and child mortality rates. However, current studies often approach participation narrowly through involvement in biomedical ANC, overlooking local fatherhood experiences and men's relational and culturally grounded roles beyond clinical settings. Drawing on Afro-communitarianism and social capital frameworks, we conducted a qualitative study in Mafararikwa, rural Eastern Zimbabwe to explore the for

Beyond Rehabilitation: Triangulating Return-to-Activity and Return-to-Sport Decisions in Golfers with Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Non‑specific low back pain (NSLBP) is highly prevalent among golfers and complicates return‑to‑activity (RTA) decisions. Existing return‑to‑sport (RTS) approaches often focus narrowly on biomedical criteria and lack golf‑specific, theoretically grounded frameworks. This study presents a preliminary conceptual framework (Phase 1) for RTA and RTS in golfers with NSLBP. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A hermeneutic systematic literature review was combined with qualitative expert interviews to integrate scientific evidence and clinical expertise. Seven studies on RTA/RTS and NSLBP were analyze

Medical diversity of migrants' physical and mental health understandings.

Health understandings of migrants, immigrants and persons with a migration background (in short: 'im/migrants') often diverge from the biomedical paradigm dominant in many host societies. Shaped by culturally diverse backgrounds, these understandings influence im/migrants' health practices and utilisation of formal healthcare services. This study aims to explore the health understandings of im/migrants residing in two socio-culturally diverse urban neighbourhoods: Bonn-Tannenbusch and Cologne-Mülheim, Germany. Employing a practice-theory approach (Schatzki 1996, 2002), a cross-sectional survey

DeepBranch: Deep Neural Networks for Branch Point Detection in Biomedical Images.

Morphology reconstruction of tree-like structures in volumetric images, such as neurons, retinal blood vessels, and bronchi, is of fundamental interest for biomedical research. 3D branch points play an important role in many reconstruction applications, especially for graph-based or seed-based reconstruction methods and can help to visualize the morphology structures. There are a few hand-crafted models proposed to detect the branch points. However, they are highly dependent on the empirical setting of the parameters for different images. In this paper, we propose a DeepBranch model for branch

Defining appropriate health status and management programs for specific-pathogen-free swine for xenotransplantation.

Swine are expected to be utilized as xenograft donors for both whole-organ and cellular transplantation. In order to meet the criteria for regulatory guidelines, donor animals are going to have to be free of potential zoonoses and other complicating diseases. Screening of animals will have to include tests for viruses, bacteria, parasites, congenital defects, and other inapparent diseases such as neoplasia or metabolic dysfunctions. The term Specific-Pathogen-Free (SPF) swine is a proprietary designation in the U.S. that does not include screening for all appropriate organisms for xenotranspla

The Chimpanzee Model of Viral Hepatitis: Advances in Understanding the Immune Response and Treatment of Viral Hepatitis.

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) have contributed to diverse fields of biomedical research due to their close genetic relationship to humans and in many instances due to the lack of any other animal model. This review focuses on the contributions of the chimpanzee model to research on hepatitis viruses where chimpanzees represented the only animal model (hepatitis B and C) or the most appropriate animal model (hepatitis A). Research with chimpanzees led to the development of vaccines for HAV and HBV that are used worldwide to protect hundreds of millions from these diseases and, where fully imple

Beyond monolayers: a comparative analysis of 2D cell cultures and 3D in vitro models as new approach methodologies.

Two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures have been used as in vitro models in biomedical research as fundamental tools for investigating biological processes. However, their limited capacity to recapitulate the complexity of human tissues has driven the search for more physiologically relevant in vitro systems. In parallel, limitations in the predictive capacity, costs, and ethical concerns associated with animal models have reinforced the importance of the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement), introduced in 1959, and more recently contributed to the emergence of New Approach Meth
