Perceived racial, socioeconomic and gender discrimination and its impact on contraceptive choice.

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to determine whether perceived racial, economic and gender discrimination has an impact on contraception use and choice of method. METHODS: We analyzed the first 2,500 women aged 14-45 years enrolled in the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, a prospective cohort study aimed to reduce barriers to obtaining long-acting reversible contraception. Items from the "Experiences of Discrimination" (EOD) scale measured experienced race-, gender- and economic-based discrimination. RESULTS: Overall, 57% of women reported a history of discrimination. Thirty-three percent re

An rTMS study into self-face recognition using video-morphing technique.

Self-face recognition is a sign of higher order self-awareness. Research into the neuronal network argues that the visual pathway of recognizing one's own face differs from recognizing others. The present study aimed at investigating the cortical network of self-other discrimination by producing virtual lesions over the temporo-parietal junction and the prefrontal cortex using low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in a sham-controlled design. Frontal and parietal areas were stimulated separately in consecutive sessions one week apart in 10 healthy subjects. We desig

Binding 3-D object perception in the human visual cortex.

How do visual luminance, shape, motion, and depth bind together in the brain to represent the coherent percept of a 3-D object within hundreds of milliseconds (msec)? We provide evidence from simultaneous magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) data that perception of 3-D objects defined by luminance or motion elicits sequential activity in human visual cortices within 500 msec. Following activation of the primary visual cortex around 100 msec, 3-D objects elicited sequential activity with only little overlap (dynamic 3-D shapes: MT-LO-Temp; stationary 3-D shapes: LO-Te

The effect of adhesive dressing edges on cutaneous irritancy and skin barrier function.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of repeated application and removal of adhesive edges from wound-care products on cutaneous irritancy and barrier function in normal volunteer subjects. METHOD: This was a study using a 'repeat-insult patch test'. Adhesive edges from six commonly used wound-care products were applied continuously to the same site (six applications over a 14-day period) in 30 normal volunteer subjects. The test sites were assessed clinically before product reapplication using established ranking scales for cutaneous erythema. The cumulative irritancy score (CIS) for each test si

A practical measure of impairment: psychometric properties of the impairment rating scale in samples of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and two school-based samples.

Assessing impairment is an explicit component of current psychiatric diagnostic systems. A brief parent and teacher rating scale for assessing impairment was developed and studied using attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as an exemplar disorder. The psychometric properties of the Impairment Rating Scale (IRS) were measured in 4 samples. Two included ADHD and matched comparison children and the other 2 a school sample. Overall, IRS ratings exhibited very good temporal stability. They correlated with other impairment ratings and behavioral measures and displayed evidence of converge

Gestational exposure to methylmercury and selenium: effects on a spatial discrimination reversal in adulthood.

Selenium, a nutrient, and methylmercury, a developmental neurotoxicant, are both found in fish. There are reports that selenium sometimes ameliorates methylmercury's neurotoxicity, but little is known about the durability of this protection after low-level gestational exposure. Developmental methylmercury exposure disrupts behavioral plasticity, and these effects extend well into adulthood and aging. The present experiment was designed to examine interactions between developmental low-level methylmercury and nutritionally relevant dietary selenium on discrimination reversals in adulthood. Fema

Metabolomic Markers in Tongue-Coating Samples from Damp Phlegm Pattern Patients of Coronary Heart Disease and Chronic Renal Failure.

In this paper, we used tongue coating to obtain metabolites in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic renal failure (CRF). The metabolites were analyzed to discover the substance that serves as the underlying basis of the damp phlegm pattern. This analysis is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory of "different diseases have the same pattern." The metabolic spectrum was obtained through the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry coupling techniques and analyzed by searching the METLIN and HMDB databases. Some metabolites related to amino acids and glucose metaboli

Differential fear conditioning generates prefrontal neural ensembles of safety signals.

Fear discrimination is critical for survival, while fear generalization is effective for avoiding dangerous situations. Overgeneralized fear is a typical symptom of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research demonstrated that fear discrimination learning is mediated by prefrontal mechanisms. While the prelimbic (PL) and infralimbic (IL) subdivisions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are recognized for their excitatory and inhibitory effects on the fear circuit, respectively, the mechanisms driving fear discriminati

Free recall and forgetting of emotionally arousing words in autism spectrum disorder.

Since the earliest descriptions of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) abnormalities in affective behaviours have been considered a prominent feature in their clinical manifestations. What remains unclear, however, is whether these altered emotional behaviours are a mere facet of abnormalities in socio-cognitive processes or whether they constitute a primary feature of the condition. A number of studies now indicate that emotional processing atypicalities in ASD extend to domains outside the broader context of social cognition leading us to suggest that the disorder may be charac

A pilot study examining the performance of polynomial-modeled ventricular shock electrograms for rhythm discrimination in implantable devices.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate shocks continue to be a problem for patients with implantable defibrillators (ICD). We evaluated the performance of polynomial-modeled ventricular electrograms (EGM) to discriminate between supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and ventricular tachycardia (VT). METHODS: Seven sets of EGM from patients having both SVT and VT documented during a single ICD interrogation were included. The cardiac cycle was analyzed off-line in two parts, QR and RQ segments, which were modeled separately using third-order and sixth-order polynomial equations, respectively. These segments w

The relationship between C-reactive protein-triglyceride-glucose index and incident cardiometabolic multimorbidity in postmenopausal women: insights from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), defined as the coexistence of at least two cardiometabolic diseases, is an increasing public health burden. Postmenopausal women may be particularly vulnerable because menopause-related metabolic and inflammatory changes can intensify cardiometabolic risk. However, simple tools for early CMM risk prediction in this population remain limited. The C-reactive protein-triglyceride-glucose index (CTI) integrates inflammatory status and insulin resistance, but its association with incident CMM in postmenopausal women has not been fully evaluated.
