BACKGROUND: Titin is a giant protein crucial for the assembly and elasticity of the sarcomere. Recently, titin has been linked to signal transduction through its kinase domain, which has been proposed to sense mechanical load. We developed a knockout in which expression of M-line-deficient titin can be induced in adult mice and investigated the role of the titin kinase region in cardiac function.

BACKGROUND: The rhytidectomy approach for parotidectomy allows the incision to be hidden, and post-operative scarring minimised. Furthermore, separate elevation of the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS) reduces the incidence of Frey's syndrome, and provides vascularized soft tissue for contour reconstruction. The technique has gained popularity particularly with plastic surgeons, but concerns persist that with this approach, particularly with lesions located anteriorly, access to the gland may be inadequate, and facial nerve identification may be compromised.

OBJECTIVE: To report the methods and clinical effect of the lateral crural flaps in repairing anterior tibial, dorsal and calcaneal soft-tissue defects.
METHODS: From August 1999 to December 2004, 18 cases of defects were repaired with lateral crural flap, including 15 cases of anterior tibial, dorsal and calcaneal soft-tissue defects with vascular pedicled island lateral crural flaps and 3 cases of dorsal pedal soft-tissue defects with free vascular lateral crural flaps.
RESULTS: All flaps survived after operation. Insufficient arterial supply of the flap occurred in 2 cases after operation
