Systematic review of patella cubiti: Does it really exist?

BACKGROUND: Accessory bones located dorsally to the elbow joint are exceedingly rare and remain poorly defined. These include the patella cubiti, os supratrochleare posterius, and os sesamoideum tricipitale, which are frequently misdiagnosed as traumatic or pathological entities such as congenital pseudarthrosis, persistent epiphysis, and non-unions. The present study aims to systematically analyse documented cases of patella cubiti, establish diagnostic criteria, and differentiate these conditions from other pathologies. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted, examining…

A Novel Procrustes Analysis Method to Quantify Multi-Joint Coordination of the Upper Extremity after Stroke.

Upper extremity motor impairment affects about 80% of persons after strokes. For stroke rehabilitation, upper limb kinematic assessments hav … he hand and forearm segments moved in a more coordinated manner during initiation. The shoulder and elbow become more coordinated during movement completion. In impaired movement, this coordination between the hand and forearm is disrupted as the arm decelerates. The utilization of Procrustes analysis may be a step towards developing a comprehensive and …

Lipoma Arborescens of the Upper Extremity With Anatomic Variation of the Palmaris Longus: A Case Report.

CASE: We present a case of a patient who suffered from wrist swelling and had symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. The patient underwent ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, in which signs of joint effusion and a fatty synovial lesion were presented. The treatment included open excision of the tumor. In addition, the palmaris longus muscle had an anatomic variation with proximal and distal tendon portions. The histopathological examination disclosed lipoma arborescens of the synovial membranes of the joints. CONCLUSION: The recognition of this entity and its characteristics are important

Distal biceps tendon ruptures: more efficient diagnostics for a better outcome.

Distal biceps tendon ruptures are a rare pathology, but can have significant functional repercussions. Rapid, accurate diagnosis and treatment are essential for a favorable prognosis. During the diagnostic process of distal biceps tendon ruptures, several problems can emerge. An answer to the following clinical questions is given based on an extensive literature review. - Which clinical tests are the most sensitive/ specific for clinical examination? - Can ultrasound evaluation of the distal biceps tendon be optimized? - Is ultrasound an equivalent alternative to MRI in the diagnosis of distal

Transformation from arm joint coordinates to hand external coordinates explains non-uniform precision of hand position sense in horizontal workspace.

People perceive hand position in horizontal workspace more precisely in radial than in azimuth directions and closer to the body than farthe … t targets. We then theoretically analyzed the transformation of random angle errors at shoulder and elbow into hand position random errors in a horizontal plane and obtained similar distributions of hand position errors. The predicted and experimental hand-precision ellipse orientations, but not ellipse shapes or sizes, were highly correlated and were n …

A comprehensive review of the "supracondylar process" with translation of Adachi.

The supracondylar process is a nonpathological projection from the distal humerus that in some patients, can result in compression of regional neurovascular structures, for example, median nerve. Since the first description of the supracondylar process in 1818, it has also been a focus of anthropological study because of its possible relevance to human origins and relationships to other species. Although its overall incidence is low, it is more common in races of European descent. It is particularly interesting for anatomists and anthropologists, but knowledge of its anatomical relationships a

Posterior interosseous neuropathy: distinguishing from a proximal radial neuropathy.

The posterior interosseous nerve is the terminal motor branch of the radial nerve that innervates the extensor carpi ulnaris and the extensors of the thumb and fingers. We describe a case of a posterior interosseous neuropathy presenting with the typical 'finger drop' and partial 'wrist drop'. We focus on the clinical signs that distinguish it from a more proximal radial neuropathy, clarified by nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography. Multimodal imaging of the forearm did not identify a compressive lesion. Persistent symptoms prompted surgical exploration 5 years after initial on

Pediatric Office Procedures.

Pediatric patients are frequently evaluated in primary care clinics. Thus, there exists a need to understand common pediatric problems and to acquire a degree of familiarity with pediatric procedures. This article will review techniques and the current evidence for frequently performed pediatric procedures, including umbilical granuloma chemocautery, frenotomy, suture ligation of type B postaxial polydactyly, reduction of nursemaid's elbow, hair tourniquet removal, and tympanometry.

Anatomy of the Posterior Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve, Revisited.

PURPOSE: To describe the branching pattern of the posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve (PABCN) and to corroborate measurements and observations reported by previous authors. METHODS: Using 28 fresh-frozen cadaver specimens, we dissected the PABCN from its origin from the radial nerve to its terminal arborization in the distal forearm. Measurements relative to the lateral humeral epicondyle were recorded. The course of the nerve over the muscles of the mobile wad and its branching pattern in the proximal forearm were noted. RESULTS: The PABCN originated from the radial nerve at a mean of 14

Surgical Correction of Cubitus Varus.

Cubitus varus can arise from distal humerus fractures in childhood as a result of malunion, nonunion, or overgrowth. Several types of distal humerus osteotomies have been described to treat this deformity, each with its own benefits, drawbacks, and complications. This article details the surgical technique and expected outcomes for 4 of the most commonly used types of distal humerus osteotomies in the treatment of cubitus varus. Specifically, we will describe the techniques for the lateral closing-wedge osteotomy, the step-cut osteotomy and its variations, the dome osteotomy and its variations

Advantages of 70° arthroscope in management of ECRB tendinopathy.

Lateral epicondylitis requires a challenging therapeutic management even for expert surgeons. With the failure of conservative treatment, the physician should consider a surgical choice. The purpose of the surgical procedure is to excise the degenerated tissue of extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon. This article describes the arthroscopic release, performed under direct visualization with a 70° scope; the aim is to encourage the use of this type of lens, versus the traditional 30° one. The patient is positioned in a modified lateral decubitus. After joint distension, a diagnostic arthroscopy

A rare Wilkins group II fracture of the proximal radial metaphysis.

In this study, we report a rare fracture of the proximal radial metaphysis in an 11-year-old child, involving an anterior displacement of the proximal radial metaphysis instead of a displacement of the epiphysis, which preserved its normal connections with the capitellum. This fracture was successfully treated by closed reduction and wire fixation. The reduction maneuver attempted to reduce the proximal radial metaphysis under the epiphysis instead of doing the opposite. The mechanism of this injury is probably an extension strain on a forearm in pronation associated with a violent contraction

Biceps tendon injuries in athletes.

Although rare, athletes involved in competitive strength training and contact sports may sustain distal tendon biceps injuries. Treatment of complete distal biceps tendon ruptures in athletes is primarily surgical. Early repair, through either one-incision or two-incision techniques with anatomic reinsertion of the ruptured tendon to the bicipital tuberosity, is highly recommended. In this article the etiology and pathophysiology of distal biceps tendon ruptures, current diagnostic modalities, and surgical indications are discussed. Also, treatment options, surgical techniques, outcomes, and p
