Effects of music therapy on functional ability in people with cerebral palsy: a systematic review.

[Purpose] This study aimed to evaluate the improvement in lower extremity hemiplegia following brain tumor operation with an integrated volitional control electrical stimulator (IVES). [Participant and Methods] A 40 year-old male with anaplasic oligodendroglioma in the right frontal lobe underwent IVES in the rectus femoris and tibialis anterior muscles using the power-assist and sensor-trigger modes. Lower extremity motor function was assessed before and after the therapy sessions. An assessment was conducted using various techniques, including static posturography and surface electromyograph

Electrical and visible light dual-responsive ZnO nanocomposite with multiple wound healing capability.

The healing process of open wounds is a competition between cells and bacteria. Therefore, a strategy that can quickly remove bacteria and promote cell proliferation to accelerate wound healing is urgently needed. Inspired by photoelectric synergy tactics, we improved both the optical and electrical response of zinc oxide (ZnO) through the modification of polydopamine (PDA) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), thus obtaining a ZnO composite named PDA-rGO-ZnO (PrZ). Combined with the photoelectric double stimulation, the sterilization target could be completed from multiple physical levels simulta

Upper Extremity Assessment in Tetraplegia: The Importance of Differentiating Between Upper and Lower Motor Neuron Paralysis.

Scientific advances are increasing the options for improved upper limb function in people with cervical level spinal cord injury (SCI). Some of these interventions rely on identifying an aspect of paralysis that is not uniformly assessed in SCI: the integrity of the lower motor neuron (LMN). SCI can damage both the upper motor neuron and LMN causing muscle paralysis. Differentiation between these causes of paralysis is not typically believed to be important during SCI rehabilitation because, regardless of the cause, the muscles are no longer under voluntary control by the patient. Emerging tre

Randomized controlled comparative study on effect of training to improve lower limb motor paralysis in convalescent patients with post-stroke hemiplegia.

[Purpose] The motor paralysis-improving effect on the hemiplegic lower limb was compared among mirror therapy, integrated volitional-control electrical stimulation, therapeutic electrical stimulation, repetitive facilitative exercises, and the standard training method in post-stroke hemiplegia patients. [Subjects and Methods] Eighty one stroke patients admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward were randomly allocated to the above 5 treatment groups. Each patient performed functional training of the paralytic lower limb for 20 minutes a day for 4 weeks, and changes in the lower limb functi

[Arrhythmias in pregnancy. How and when to treat?].

Cardiac arrhythmias can develop during pregnancy. The risk of arrhythmias is relatively higher during labor and delivery. Potential factors that can promote arrhythmias in pregnancy or during labor and delivery, include the direct cardiac electrophysiological effects of hormones, changes in autonomic tone, hemodynamic perturbations, hypokalemia, and underlying heart disease. In this review, the basis for treatment of supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias are described. No drug therapy is usually needed for the management of supraventricular or ventricular premature beats, but potential

Urethral sensitivity in incontinent women.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to ascertain whether frequent voiding and urge incontinence are associated with supersensitivity to electrical stimulation in the posterior urethra. METHODS: Current perception thresholds (CPT) were tested at four stimulus frequencies (1, 3, 20, and 100 Hz; duration 0.5 ms) using a square-wave constant current electrical stimulator connected to ring electrodes on a urethral catheter. The strength of the current at the first tingling sensation was regarded as the CPT. CPT analysis and cystometry were performed on 61 women (ages 28-89 years). RESULTS: CPTs

Convergence of nociceptive information from temporomandibular joint and tooth pulp afferents on C1 spinal neurons in the rat.

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that there is a convergence of afferent inputs from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on C1 spinal neurons responding to electrical stimulation of the tooth pulp (TP). In 14 pentobarbital anesthetized rats, the extracellular single unit activity of 31 C1 spinal neurons and the amplitude in a digastric muscle electromyogram (n = 31) increased proportionally during 1.0-3.5 times the threshold for the jaw-opening reflex (JOR). Of 31 C1 spinal neurons responsive to TP afferents, 28 (approximately 90%) were also excited by electrical stimulati

Dual effect of agmatine in the bisected rat vas deferens.

The functional effects of the amine agmatine, the putative endogenous ligand for alpha(2)-adrenoceptors and imidazoline receptors, in rat vas deferens were investigated by using the epididymal and prostatic portions. Tissues were contracted by electrical stimulation or by exogenous drugs. In electrically stimulated portions, agmatine caused a dual effect on contractions. In the epididymal portion an inhibition on twitch contractions was observed, which was partially antagonised by idazoxan and yohimbine, indicating the involvement of at least a presynaptic alpha(2)-adrenoceptor-mediated mechan

Possible antimigraine mechanisms of action of the 5HT1F receptor agonist LY334370.

This study investigated whether the selective 5HT1F receptor agonist LY334370 has other possible antimigraine mechanisms in addition to the proposed inhibition of dural plasma extravasation. LY334370 (up to 10(-5) M) had no vasoconstrictor effects on human cerebral arteries in vitro. It had no effect (up to 10 mg kg-1, i.v.) on neurogenic vasodilation of dural blood vessels produced by electrical stimulation of the dura mater in anesthetized rats. Nor had it any effect (at 3 mg kg-1, i.v.) on the hyperalgesia produced by injection of carrageenan into the paw of conscious rats or on nociceptive

Treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis by direct current electrotherapy: the Baghdadin device.

Electrical stimulation has been used as a mode of therapy for a number of clinical conditions. However, it has not been used for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). For this purpose, we designed the "Baghdadin device". A total of 146 lesions of acute CL in 54 patients were treated by this device. Twenty-one lesions in the same patients were left untreated as controls. In addition, 36 lesions in 15 patients were treated with intralesional sodium stibogluconate. Treatment by the Baghdadin device consisted of weekly sessions of 10 minutes of direct current electrical stimulation. The i

Interleukin-4 modulates cholinergic neural control of mouse small intestinal longitudinal muscle.

Interleukin-4 contributes to expulsion of certain gastrointestinal parasites and causes intestinal mucosal mastocytosis. Because mast cell-derived mediators are spasmogenic, potentially causing parasitic expulsion, we investigated the effect of interleukin-4 on smooth muscle and the mast cell and mediator dependency of this effect. BALB/c, mast cell-deficient W/Wv mice, 5-lipoxygenase-efficient mice, and their littermate controls were injected with interleukin-4-anti-interleukin-4 antibody complexes that chronically increase serum interleukin-4 levels. [Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in fecal incontinence in general practice of the surgically educated proctologist].

Age related, about 10% of the general population suffer from faecal incontinence. In a surgical, proctological office diagnosis is possible with carefully taken history, physical examination, digital examination of the anorectum, rigid rectosigmoidoscopy, and anoscopy. Together with special examinations (endoanal ultrasound, electromyography, pudendal nerve terminal motor latency [PNTML], anorectal manometry, defaecography, transit time of the colon) the plan for medical and surgical treatment can be made. The basic medical conservative therapy consists of regulating the form of stool (high fi

Mirth, laughter and gelastic seizures.

Little is known about what pathways subserve mirth and its expression laughter. We present three patients with gelastic seizures and laughter elicited by electrical stimulation of the cortex who provide some insight into the mechanisms of laughter and its emotional concomitants. The first patient had seizures manifested by laughter without a subjective feeling of mirth. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cavernous haemangioma in the left superior mesial frontal region. Ictal subdural electrode recording showed the seizure onset to be in the left anterior cingulate gyrus. Removal of the lesion

Experimental laryngeal reinnervation by phrenic nerve implantation into the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle.

Under general anaesthesia, 5 dogs underwent sectioning of the right recurrent nerve followed by implantation of the phrenic nerve into the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. Some 6-7 months later the dogs were sacrificed after registration of vocal cord motility. Still photographs and movie film of the larynx were taken during quiet and forced respiration and at electrical stimulation of the implanted phrenic nerve. The PCA and vocal muscles were removed for histochemical studies. We found practically no abductory movement of the vocal cord on the reinnervated side, either during quiet or

Development of innervation in cat gastrointestinal sphincters during the postnatal period. (Functional studies).

The development of function in the intramural nerves was investigated by evaluating the mechanical responses of the smooth muscle of cat gastrointestinal sphincters to transmural electrical stimulation (2-20 Hz, 0.5 msec, supramaximal intensity for 20 sec) between 1 and 60 days postnatal. The intramural nervous system of the gastrointestinal sphincters was found to develop functionally in a cranio-caudal sequence. The cholinergic innervation in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) was well developed in the first postnatal days. The development of the non-cholinergic, non-adrenergic innervation

Preparation and Implantation of Electrodes for Electrically Kindling VGAT-Cre Mice to Generate a Model for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

It was discovered that electrical kindling of VGAT-Cre mice led to the spontaneous motor and electrographic seizures. A recent paper focused on how unique VGAT-Cre mice were used in developing spontaneous recurring seizures (SRS) after kindling and a likely mechanism - insertion of Cre into the VGAT gene - disrupted its expression and reduced GABAergic tone. The present study extends these observations to a larger cohort of mice, focusing on key issues such as how long the SRS continues after kindling and the effect of the animal's sex and age. This report describes the protocols for the follo

The effects of electrode configuration and location on motor thresholds, tolerance, and muscle selectivity of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation in stroke.

Identifying optimal conditions for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS), such as electrode configuration, is essential for clinical translation, particularly as this promising neuromodulation therapy expands to include diverse neurological populations. However, before clinical application, it is important to understand how different configurations affect dosage and muscle recruitment. We define dosage as the percentage of the current needed to elicit a motor response (the resting motor threshold, or RMT) of the current value tolerated during walking when stimulation is delivered conti

Guidelines on neurostimulation for chronic pain: a compliance appraisal of reporting standards.

INTRODUCTION: The field of neuromodulation has experienced substantial growth, accompanied by an increase in clinical practice guidelines aimed at supporting evidence-based practice. However, adherence to reporting standards remains critical in the development of a comprehensive and transparent clinical practice guideline. This study evaluated the reporting quality of guidelines on neurostimulation for chronic pain by assessing compliance with the Reporting Items for Practice Guidelines in Healthcare (RIGHT) checklist and the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) checklis

A pilot study on the use of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation to relieve dysmenorrhea in patients with adenomyosis and endometriosis.

Adenomyosis and endometriosis are two sister diseases that cause menstrual pain and other symptoms. We have previously reported that patients with these conditions have a less active 'calm-and-rest' system and a more active 'stress-and-alert' system. Other studies have shown that a gentle, non-invasive treatment called transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) can safely and effectively boost the 'calm-and-rest' system in many disorders. So we wanted to see if taVNS could also help with menstrual pain caused by endometriosis and adenomyosis. We tried it in a small pilot study wi
