Serum albumin and fixation failure with cannulated hip screws in undisplaced intracapsular femoral neck fracture.

Introduction Internal fixation of undisplaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures with cannulated hip screws is a widely accepted surgical technique, despite reported failure rates of 12%-19%. This study determined whether preoperative serum albumin levels are linked to fixation failure. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 251 consecutive undisplaced intracapsular femoral neck fracture patients treated with cannulated hip screws in a district general hospital. Preoperative albumin levels were measured, and the fixation technique, classification and posterior tilt on radiography assessed. Fixa

Surgical outcomes and complication rates of arthroscopic-assisted fixation versus open fixation for coronoid fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Coronoid fractures often occur with complex elbow dislocations, accounting for 15% of elbow fractures. The effectiveness of open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) versus arthroscopic-assisted reduction internal fixation (ARIF) surgeries for coronoid fractures remains uncertain. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of these two surgical approaches in treating varus posteromedial injuries. METHODS: This study was conducted and reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO. Th

Medial sesamoid nonunion combined with hallux valgus in athletes: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND There are many surgical treatment approaches for talar fractures. However, due to the unique anatomical and blood supply characteristics of the talus, the traditional approaches tend to lead to blood supply damage. In order to best preserve the blood supply of the talus, we proposed a surgical approach of internal fixation of the talar fracture with lateral malleolar osteotomy and analyzed its efficacy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-six patients with talar fractures underwent open reduction surgery between January 2010 and December 2016. Following the lateral malleolar osteotomy, the

The clinical outcome of the reduction of the patellar inferior pole fracture with wire cerclage through a generated bone hole, in combination with patellar concentrator: a retrospective comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: The patellar inferior pole fracture is typically comminuted. Hence, achieving firm fixation and early activity is highly challenging. In this article, we employed the method of wire cerclage through a generated bone hole to reduce the fracture. Our objective was to compare the clinical efficacy of patellar concentrator alone with a combination of cerclage and patellar concentrator in the treatment of patellar inferior pole fracture. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients with patellar inferior pole fractures, who underwent patellar concentrator fixation only (the

Outcome of Schatzker type V and VI tibial plateau fractures.

BACKGROUND: Schatzker type V and VI tibial fractures are complex injuries, usually treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using dual plates or ring fixators. ORIF has the advantage of not requiring pin tract care, but has a higher infection rate, especially in open fractures. We have combined the advantages of these two methods to treat these difficult fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten Schatzker type V and 11 Schatzker type VI fractures were treated between 2006 and 2010. ORIF with dual plates was performed, only if there was marked articular displacement (> 2 mm) in a c

Results of Low Distal Femur Periprosthetic Fractures.

OBJECTIVES: To compare retrograde intramedullary nail (RIMN) and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) in very distal periprosthetic distal femur fractures (PDFFs) to determine whether RIMN is an acceptable option for these fractures that are often considered too distal for IMN due to limited bone stock. DESIGN: Retrospective comparative series. SETTING: Level 1 trauma center. PATIENTS: Patients were treated with fracture fixation for a very distal PDFF, defined as the fracture extending to the anterior flange of the implant or distal. Fifty-six patients met inclusion criteria, with 8 exc

Plate fixation through an anterior approach for coronoid process fractures: A retrospective case series and a literature review.

Coronoid process fractures of the ulna are difficult to treat, and are associated with stiffness, recurrent instability, and pain. Hence, treatment of coronoid process fractures are challenging for surgeons. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical outcomes of an anterior surgical approach associated with plate fixation for Regan and Morrey type II or type III fractures of the coronoid process. We evaluated 16 consecutive patients who underwent surgical treatment for fracture of the coronoid process of the ulna from March 2012 to July 2016. Ten patients had a type II fracture, and 6

Higher Reoperation Rates in Planned, Staged Treatment of Open Fractures Compared with Fix-and-Close: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Initial surgical management of Gustilo-Anderson type-I to IIIA open fractures varies from surgical fixation of the fracture with immediate closure of the traumatic wound to various combinations of staged fracture and wound management. The decision to choose staged management has historically been based on wound contamination and the severity of the open fracture. The purpose of this study was to compare the rates of surgical site infection (SSI), wound complication, nonunion, and 1-year reoperation between patients with type-I to IIIA open fractures who underwent fix-and-close trea

[Experimental examination for optimized stabilisation of trochanteric femur fractures, intra- or extramedullary implant localisation and influence of femur neck component profile on cut-out risk].

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the proximal femur are typical injuries of the elderly. Therefore immediate restoration of weight-bearing capacity and prevention of local complications with the need for of secondary surgical procedures are very important. METHODS: In an experimental test the weight-bearing capacity under alternating load up to 2,000 N and 4,000 cycles was analysed in the newest implants for extramedullary fixation (the DHS with lateral buttress plate, DHS) and for intramedullary fixation (the gliding nail, GN). If no instability occurred a static maximum load test was performed. T
