Distribution and accumulative pattern of tetracyclines and sulfonamides in edible vegetables of cucumber, tomato, and lettuce.

Veterinary antibiotics can be released to environment by the animals' excretions, which thereby poses human health and ecological risks. Six … fonamides (SAs) were detected in the nonedible parts, roots, and leaves of cucumber and tomato, but fruit parts accumulated them lower than acceptable daily intake. Indeed, cucumber roots accumulated SAs by up to 94.6% of total addition (at 5 mg kg(-1) soil).

Yields, phenolic profiles and antioxidant activities of Ziziphus jujube Mill. in response to different fertilization treatments.

Increasing demand for more jujube (Ziziphus jujube Mill.) production requires understanding the specific fertilization needs of jujube trees. This study was conducted to compare fruit yields, phenolic profiles and antioxidant activity of jujube in response to different fertilizers. Application of organic fertilizer appeared to enhance the phenolics and antioxidant activity accumulation of jujubes, compared to conventional fertilized jujubes. Amongst inorganic fertilizers, supplemental potassium as an individual nutrient improved the accumulation of phenolics in jujubes. Our results demonstrate…

The photorespiratory pathway is involved in the defense response to powdery mildew infection in chestnut rose.

Chestnut rose (Rosa roxburghii Tratt), a non-domesticated potential fruit crop, is susceptible to infection by powdery mildew. A small-scale customized macro-array was assembled with cDNA clones from a suppression subtractive hybridization library enriched for defense transcripts and used to screen for differentially expressed genes induced by powdery mildew infection. Three photorespiratory genes, encoding the small subunit of RuBisCO (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase), RuBisCO activase and serine-glyoxylate aminotransferase, were identified in this screen. Quantitative RT-PCR …

[Molecular aspects of allergy to plant products. Part I. Class I and II allergens and crossreactivity of IgE antibodies].

Food allergies are adverse immunologic reactions that might be due to IgE--or none IgE-mediated immune mechanisms or mixed. One of the more common and typically most mild forms of IgE- mediated food allergy is the so-called oral allergy syndrome (OAS), although systemic symptoms after ingesting a particular fruit or vegetable can occur. Pollen food syndrome is the most common food allergy in adolescents and adults. It develops as a consequence of shared epitopes in the primary and tertiary structures of pollen and food allergens. The authors describe class I and class II allergens, as well as …

Anticoccidial activity of maslinic acid against infection with Eimeria tenella in chickens.

We propose maslinic acid (2-alpha, 3-beta-dihydroxiolean-12-en-28-oic acid), found in the leaves and fruit of the olive tree (Olea europaea L.), as a new natural coccidiostatic product against Eimeria tenella. Its action in infected animals has been compared with animals treated with sodium salinomycin. The lesion index (LS), the oocyst index (OI) and the anticoccidial index (ACI) were studied with regard to the weight of the chicks. The ACI for maslinic acid was 210.27 and for sodium salinomycin 173.09. Similarly, both LS and OI decreased in the groups treated with maslinic acid. A considerab…

Dietary intake of homeless women residing at a transitional living center.

Women who are homeless experience health problems due to many factors, including poor nutrition. This paper describes a nutritional assessment of women who are homeless living at a transitional living center in an urban setting. A rapid food screener was used to assess fat, fruit and vegetable, and fiber intake, and focus group analysis was used to assess nutritional attitudes and dietary behaviors. We found that the dietary intake of shelter residents does not meet the USDA recommendations in several key areas. We also found that shelter residents considered shelter cafeteria food to be inade…

Musculoskeletal manifestations of scurvy.

Scurvy occurs in individuals who eat inadequate amounts of fresh fruit or vegetables, often because of dietary imbalances related to advanced age or homelessness. Asthenia, vascular purpura, bleeding, and gum abnormalities are the main symptoms. In 80% of cases, the manifestations of scurvy include musculoskeletal symptoms consisting of arthralgia, myalgia, hemarthrosis, and muscular hematomas. Vitamin C depletion is responsible for structural collagen alterations, defective osteoid matrix formation, and increased bone resorption. Imaging studies may show osteolysis, joint space loss, osteonec…

Learning, memory, and transcription factors.

Cognitive disorders in children have traditionally been described in terms of clinical phenotypes or syndromes, chromosomal lesions, metabolic disorders, or neuropathology. Relatively little is known about how these disorders affect the chemical reactions involved in learning and memory. Experiments in fruit flies, snails, and mice have revealed some highly conserved pathways that are involved in learning, memory, and synaptic plasticity, which is the primary substrate for memory storage. These can be divided into short-term memory storage through local changes in synapses, and long-term stora…

Preserved visual lexicosemantics in global aphasia: a right-hemisphere contribution?

Extensive testing of a patient, GP, who encountered large-scale destruction of left-hemisphere (LH) language regions was undertaken in order to address several issues concerning the ability of nonperisylvian areas to extract meaning from printed words. Testing revealed recognition of superordinate boundaries of animals, tools, vegetables, fruit, clothes, and furniture. GP was able to distinguish proper names from other nouns and from nonwords. GP was also able to differentiate words representing living things from those denoting nonliving things. The extent of LH infarct resulting in a global …

Molecular cloning of the cDNA coding for the (R)-(+)-mandelonitrile lyase of Prunus amygdalus: temporal and spatial expression patterns in flowers and mature seeds.

A gene highly expressed in the floral organs of almond (Prunus amygdalus Batsch), and coding for the cyanogenic enzyme (R)-(+)-mandelonitrile lyase (EC 4.1.2.10), has been identified and the full-length cDNA sequenced. The temporal expression pattern in maturing seeds and during floral development was analyzed by RNA blot, and the highest mRNA levels were detected in floral tissues. The spatial mRNA accumulation pattern in almond flower buds was also analyzed by in-situ hybridization. The mRNA levels were compared during seed maturation and floral development in fruit and floral samples from c…

Aspergillosis mycetoma of the maxillary antrum.

Aspergillus is a fungus, usually found growing as one of the many moulds of fruit, foods and nuts. This paper deals with a ball of fungus growing in the maxillary antrum of an elderly female patient presenting as a radio-opaque expansile mass. In man, aspergillus fumigatus and aspergillus flavis have both been incriminated as pathogenic species in the para nasal sinuses. Spores of aspergilli become mixed with dust and can enter the ear, nose and lungs. If conditions are favourable, growth will ensue. Generally aspergillus is believed to be an opportunistic pathogen more commonly found in the c…

Sexual differentiation in Aspergillus nidulans: the requirement for manganese and the correlation between phosphoglucomutase and the synthesis of reserve material.

Aspergillus nidulans was completely devoid of fruit bodies when grown on manganese deficient cultures. This result was shown earlier to be due to a lack of alpha-1,3 glucan in the cell wall. Several enzymes of carbon and nitrogen metabolism were investigated in an attempt to explain the absence of this reserve material. Synthesis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucoisomerase and aldolase, were not strongly affected by manganese deficiency. However, phosphoglucomutase showed only 60% of the activity of the control cultures and it was argued that this was connected with the low amo…

CsSSU I differentially modulates plastidial prenyltransferases linked to coloration and aroma in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L.).

Coloration (carotenoids) and aroma (volatile terpenoids) are major determinants of citrus fruit quality, but their coordinated improvement is challenging because carotenoid and volatile-terpenoid biosynthesis draw on a shared isoprenoid precursor network. Here, we used chimeric fruits of the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L.) bud mutant "Zongcheng" to investigate this metabolic coordination. Metabolomic analyses revealed coordinated accumulation of carotenoids and volatile terpenoids in the brown peel sectors. We systematically characterized the sweet orange trans-prenyltransferase (TPT) family…

Plant-based food groups and cardiovascular disease: inverse associations with variable mechanistic support.

This review integrates recent evidence on the associations between major plant-based food groups and cardiovascular disease (CVD), the biolo … ns was synthesized using a three-tier framework. Higher intakes of whole grains, legumes or pulses, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and seeds were generally associated with lower risks of CVD outcomes. However, the magnitude and consistency of associations varied across food groups and outcomes. Human trials most consistently showed reductions in low-de …

Cytological and transcriptomic responses of WI-38 human lung fibroblasts to plant-exposed metal nanoparticle residues.

Metal-based nanoparticles are increasingly encountered in human exposure scenarios, yet the relationship between residue-level exposure and cellular hazard remains unclear. In this study, iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and silver (Ag) nanoparticles were applied to chilli pepper plants to estimate plant-associated metal nanoparticle residues in the edible fruits. Subsequently, exposure-relevant concentration ranges were defined and examined in normal human WI-38 fibroblasts using integrated cytological and transcriptomic approaches. Metal accumulation was higher in vegetative tissues than fruits, with…

Occurrence and Detection Profiles of Technology-Critical Elements (Ga, Ge, Nb, Ta and W) in Wild Mushrooms from Leicester and Leicestershire, UK.

Technology-critical elements are increasingly used in electronics, renewable-energy systems, high-performance alloys and other strategic technologies, yet their occurrence in wild fungi remains poorly characterised. This study evaluated gallium (Ga), germanium (Ge), niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta) and tungsten (W) in wild mushrooms collected from Leicester and Leicestershire, UK. The dataset was reconstructed at fruiting-body level to avoid pseudo-replication from paired cap and stem records, yielding 121 analytical units. Results were corrected using digestion-date acid blanks, interpreted agains…
