Huntington's disease is an inherited disorder characterized by psychiatric, cognitive, and motor symptoms due to degeneration of medium spiny neurons in the striatum. A prodromal phase precedes the onset, lasting decades. Current biomarkers include clinical score and striatal atrophy using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). These markers lack sensitivity for subtle cellular changes during the prodromal phase. MRI and MR spectroscopy offer different contrasts for assessing metabolic, microstructural, functional, or vascular alterations in the disease. They have been used in patients and mouse mo

Humans naturally integrate signals from the olfactory and intranasal trigeminal systems. A tight interplay has been demonstrated between these two systems, and yet the neural circuitry mediating olfactory-trigeminal (OT) integration remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), combined with psychophysics, this study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying OT integration. Fifteen participants with normal olfactory function performed a localization task with air-puff stimuli, phenylethyl alcohol (PEA; rose odor), or a combination thereof while being scanne

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal multi-system neurodegenerative disorder with no effective treatment or cure. Although primarily characterized by motor degeneration, cognitive dysfunction is an important non-motor symptom that has a negative impact on patient and caregiver burden. Mild cognitive deficits are present in a subgroup of non-demented patients with ALS, often preceding motor symptoms. Detailed neuropsychological assessments reveal deficits in a variety of cognitive domains, including those of verbal fluency and retrieval, language, executive function, attention and ver

The integration of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has revolutionized the landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) research and therapeutic interventions. By combining structural and functional imaging, PET/CT provides a comprehensive understanding of disease pathology and response to treatment assessment. PET/CT, particularly with 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG), facilitates the visualization of glucose metabolism in the brain, enabling early diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of neurodegenerative disease progression. The advent of amyloid and tau PET

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest severe mental disorders (SMDs), such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, are associated with common alterations in brain activity, albeit with a graded level of impairment. However, discrepancies between study findings likely to results from both small sample sizes and the use of different functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tasks. To address these issues, data-driven meta-analytic approach designed to identify homogeneous brain co-activity patterns across tasks was conducted to better characterize the common and distinct alter

Social anxiety-which typically emerges in adolescence-lies on a continuum and, when extreme, can be devastating. Socially anxious individuals are prone to heightened fear, anxiety, and the avoidance of contexts associated with potential social scrutiny. Yet most neuroimaging research has focused on acute social threat. Much less attention has been devoted to understanding the neural systems recruited during the uncertain anticipation of potential encounters with social threat. Here we used a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm to probe the neural circuitry engaged during the a

BACKGROUND: A developing theory and recent research suggest that heightened reactivity to uncertain stressors or threats may be an important individual difference factor that facilitates excessive drinking as a means of avoidance-based coping and characterizes individuals with current and past alcohol use disorder (AUD). Neuroimaging studies of unpredictable threat processing have repeatedly demonstrated activation of the anterior insula, anteromedial thalamus, and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. In the current study, we aimed to understand how these 3 regions function as a network during an

Physical pain and negative emotions represent two distinct drinking motives that contribute to harmful alcohol use. Proactive avoidance, in contrast, can reduce consumption in response to these motives but appears to be impaired in those with problem drinking. Despite such evidence, proactive avoidance and its underlying neural deficits have not been assessed experimentally. How these deficits inter-relate with drinking motives to influence alcohol use also remains unclear. The current study leveraged neuroimaging data in forty-one problem and forty-one social drinkers who performed a probabil

The smoking rate is high in patients with schizophrenia. Brain stimulation targeting conventional brain circuits associated with nicotine addiction has also yielded mixed results. We aimed to identify alternative circuitries associated with nicotine addiction in both the general population and schizophrenia, and then test whether modulation of such circuitries may alter nicotine addiction behaviors in schizophrenia. In Study I of 40 schizophrenia smokers and 51 non-psychiatric smokers, cross-sectional neuroimaging analysis identified resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the dor

PURPOSE: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a life-threatening condition demanding prompt reperfusion to salvage brain tissue. Thrombolytic drugs, like tenecteplase (TNK), offer clot dissolution, but time constraints and contraindications limit their use. Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) revolutionized AIS treatment, especially for large vessel occlusions (LVO). Recent evidence suggests that administering TNK before MT improves recanalization and outcomes, challenging the dominance of alteplase.
METHODS: Relevant articles focusing on TNK before MT were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Scienc

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) confers risk for different mental disorders as well as transdiagnostic symptoms such as dissociation. Aberrant amygdala response to interpersonal threat may link CM to transdiagnostic psychopathology and has recently been shown to depend on type and developmental timing of CM experiences. Still, most studies on CM and threat-related amygdala response employ categorical disorder-specific perspectives and fail to consider type and timing of CM exposure. We aimed to investigate associations between CM, amygdala response to interpersonal threat, and dimensio

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly heterogeneous mental condition with a diverse symptom. Existing studies classified OCD on the basis of conventional phenomenology-based taxonomy ignoring the fact that the same subtype identified in accordance with clinical symptom may have different mechanisms and treatment responses.
METHODS: This research involved 50 medicine-free patients with OCD and 50 matched healthy controls (HCs). All the participants were subjected to structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and amplitude of

In this review, we have amalgamated the literature, taking a multimodal neuroimaging approach to quantify the relationship between neuronal firing and haemodynamics during a task paradigm (i.e., neurovascular coupling response), while considering confounding physiological influences. Original research articles that used concurrent neuronal and haemodynamic quantification in humans (n ≥ 10) during a task paradigm were included from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE and PsychINFO. Articles published before 31 July 2023 were considered for eligibility. Rapid screening was completed by the fi

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), the second most common primary degenerative neurocognitive disorder after Alzheimer disease, is frequently preceded by REM sleep behavior disorders (RBD) and other behavioral symptoms, like anxiety, irritability, agitation or apathy, as well as visual hallucinations and delusions, most of which occurring in 40-60% of DLB patients. Other frequent behavioral symptoms like attention deficits contribute to cognitive impairment, while attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a risk factor for DLB. Behavioral problems in DLB are more frequent, more severe a

Functional neuroimaging studies demonstrate disinhibition of the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical circuit. However, structural imaging studies revealed conflicting results, some suggesting smaller volumes of the caudate nucleus (CN) in children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS). Here we wanted to find out whether transcranial sonography (TCS) detects alterations of raphe nuclei, substantia nigra, lenticular nucleus (LN), or CN in children with Tic disorder or TS (TIC/TS).The study included 25 treatment-naive children (age: 12.2 ± 2.5 years) with a DSM-V based diagnosis of Tic disorder …

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by impaired social functioning that negatively impacts individuals' quality of life. Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed morphological and functional changes in various brain regions associated with SAD. Recent advances in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have enabled the investigation of microstructural white matter (WM) alterations in SAD. This study aims to provide an overview of DTI/DWI studies exploring WM microstructure changes in SAD.
