We sought to review the potential role of isepamicin against infections with contemporary Gram-negative bacteria. We searched PubMed and Scopus databases to identify relevant microbiological and clinical studies published between 2000 and 2010, and we retrieved 11 and three studies, respectively. Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis-peliosis. The spectrum of disease, diagnosis, and management of B. henselae infection in solid organ transplant recipients has not been well characterized. We identified 29 cases of solid organ transplant recipients who had Bartonella infection, 24 by a review of the English-language literature and 5 from our institution. Gentamycin (GS) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat infections of various Gram-negative organisms. This study explored the potential protective role of taurine against aminoglycoside ototoxicity and the involvement of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the process. Guinea pigs, which received a single intravenous administration of gentamycin (100 mg/kg) followed by one large dose of furosemide (90 mg/kg, intravenously) were used as subjects. Hepatic abscess caused by brucellosis is extremely rare in children. We report the case of a 5-year-old girl in whom an abscess of the liver developed during an episode of acute brucellosis. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of hepatic abscess caused by brucellosis in a child.

INTRODUCTION: Bone grafting plays a critical role in promoting bone healing in infected nonunion, although recurrent infection is of concern. Cancellous bone grafting as an antibiotic delivery system has been reported as an effective method to combat infections. In this study, we report the clinical results of vancomycin-impregnated cancellous bone grafting for the treatment of infected tibial nonunion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 1996 and March 2001, 18 patients with infected tibial nonunion treated with vancomycin-impregnated cancellous bone grafting were available for follow-up.

Meningitis associated with spinal anaesthesia is a rare but well-known complication. We report on a case of fatal bacterial meningitis following spinal anaesthesia in a former preterm infant. Outpatient i.v. antibiotic therapy is well developed in the United States, largely because of pressures from third-party payers to reduce costs of medical care. We have developed an outpatient i.v. antibiotic programme in Oxford, that has evolved from a desire to provide high quality i.v. therapy to AIDS patients with cytomegalovirus retinitis. After a scraping injury to the skin a 47-year-old man developed a generalized Nocardia brasiliensis infection with cutaneous, pulmonary and cerebral dissemination. There was no predisposing underlying illness. High-dosage cotrimoxazol and short-term intrathecal and systemic gentamycin administration achieved extensive healing. This form of treatment would thus seem capable of reversing the otherwise poor prognosis of generalized N. brasiliensis infection.

For a period of 5 days, Wistar rats received Gentamycin (G), 100 mg/kg b.w./day i.m. Three days after the last injection, the rats were sacrificed and the plasma concentrations of urea (PU) and creatinine (PCr) were determined.
