Dysregulated iron homeostasis plays a central role in the development of anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is a major contributor toward resistance to treatment with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Understanding the underlying pathophysiology requires an in-depth understanding of normal iron physiology and regulation. Recent discoveries in the field of iron biology have greatly improved our understanding of the hormonal regulation of iron trafficking in human beings and how its alterations lead to the development of anemia of CKD. In addition, emerging evidence has suggested that i

Anaemia is prevalent in South East Asia and Fe deficiency (ID) is considered to be the main cause, but the role of subclinical inflammation in the aetiology is uncertain. In the present study, we determined the influence of inflammation on the biomarkers of Fe status in women and children, and herein, we discuss the proportion of anaemia associated with ID. As part of the 2006 Lao People's Democratic Republic (The Lao PDR) National Nutrition Survey, blood collected from 482 young children and 816 non-pregnant women was analysed. Plasma ferritin, transferrin receptor (sTfR), Hb, C-reactive prot

BACKGROUND: Iron and folic acid supplementation have been recommended in pregnancy for anaemia prevention, and may improve other maternal, pregnancy, and infant outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of daily oral iron supplementation during pregnancy, either alone or in combination with folic acid or with other vitamins and minerals, as an intervention in antenatal care.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Trials Registry on 18 January 2024 (including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO's International Clinical Trials Registry Platfo

Vitamin B12, folate, and other micronutrients are essential for healthy growth. We hypothesized that there is a high prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in mothers and their newborns, and that blood serum vitamin B12 and folate levels may affect anthropometric measurements at birth. A total of 204 newborn babies and their 196 mothers were included. Blood samples of newborns and mothers were obtained for vitamin B12 (<200 pg/mL) and folate (<3 ng/mL) deficiencies. Additionally, iron and ferritin levels were measured. The mean gestational age and birth weight were 37.2 ± 2.6 (22.3-41) weeks and

Anaemia is a major global health problem. Although the main cause is iron deficiency, anaemia also results from other nutritional deficiencies (folate and vitamin B12), haemolytic disorders including haemoglobinopathies, and bone marrow disorders. Accurate diagnosis of anaemia is dependent on reliable diagnostic tests and reference ranges, which in turn are dependent on effective standardisation. Standardisation is achieved through the availability of reference materials and reference measurement procedures. International biological reference materials have therefore been developed to standard

At a recent symposium, presentations were made summarizing current knowledge relating the dietary intake of six nutrients, calcium, vitamin D, iron, zinc, folate, and thiamin to health and disease in the elderly. The nutritional concerns of the elderly are becoming Increasingly Important as this population segment grows in size. In evaluating the nutritional status of the elderly, dietary calcium deficiency is emerging as a widespread problem. Alcoholism and the chronic use of certain medications appear to be major causes of specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Preventive measures to be

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to evaluate anemia in children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), both at the time of diagnosis and over a 1-year follow-up period. A total of 160 children with IBD were included in this retrospective study. Demographic, clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, and treatment modalities were evaluated. Etiologies of anemia were determined. The mean age of the patients was 154.9 ± 39.6 months and M/F:1.1. Then, 61.9% of the patients at diagnosis and 25.9% at follow-up had anemia. The most common cause of anemia was iron defiency anemia (IDA) at d

INTRODUCTION: Previous data had shown a high prevalence of anemia and various micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) in the Tolon and Kumbungu districts. We aimed to reassess these outcomes among lactating women (LW), women of reproductive age (WRA), and preschool children (PSC) to inform the design of a MN-fortified bouillon cubes trial, including the choice of micronutrients and selection of study sites; among WRA and PSC, we aimed to identify factors associated with anemia, MND, and inflammation, and to examine anemia co-occurring with MND and inflammation.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional stud

Anemia is the hematological hallmark of copper deficiency; however, the infrequency with which it is encountered makes copper deficiency a formidable diagnostic challenge. We present the case of a 71-year-old woman who is a Jehovah's Witness with a history of cardiomyopathy, end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis, prior gastric bypass surgery, and chronic anemia, who presented with generalized weakness. She was initially diagnosed with anemia in 2003, with a hemoglobin level of 10 g/dL. Her anemia progressively worsened over time, prompting a thorough gastroenterology evaluation with n

Nuclear prelamin A recognition factor-like (NARFL) is a core component of the cytosolic iron-sulfur (Fe-S) protein assembly (CIA) system. Yet, its role in vascular pathophysiology remains poorly defined. This study demonstrates that NARFL deficiency triggers ferroptosis, leading to severe vascular endothelial dysfunction across species. In zebrafish, narfl knockout causes embryonic lethality, accompanied by neurovascular defects, blood-brain barrier disruption, and aberrant hemodynamics. Similarly, knockout of the murine ortholog (Ciao3) results in mid-gestational embryonic lethality due to im

BACKGROUND: Optimal complementary feeding is critical for adequate growth and development in infants and young children. The associations between complementary feeding and growth have been studied well, but less is known about the relationship between complementary feeding and micronutrient status.
METHODS: Using data from a national cross-sectional survey conducted in Ghana in 2017, we examined how multiple WHO-recommended complementary feeding indicators relate to anemia and the micronutrient status of children aged 6-23 months.
RESULTS: In total, 42%, 38%, and 14% of the children met the

PURPOSE: Anemia due to iron deficiency or inflammatory state is often associated with obesity. Bariatric surgery is responsible for increasing iron deficiency, but weight loss decreases the inflammatory state associated with obesity. The objective of our study was to investigate the prevalence and causes of anemia before and after bariatric surgery for severe obesity in a 5-year follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study, with electronic record analysis of obese patients, submitted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Laboratory data were collected before and up to 60 months after surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia and one of the main factors in the clinical deferral of blood donors. This fact prompted the current study that aimed to determine the prevalence and etiology of anemia in blood donor candidates and to evaluate the hematological screening technique used for the exclusion of these donors.
METHODS: This was a prospective study that compared two groups (Anemic and Non-anemic). Initially screening for anemia was performed by manually measuring hemoglobin (Bioclin(®) Kit); the results were subsequently compared with an automated screeni

The diagnostic potential of the combined use of zinc-protoporphyrin (ZPP), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and haemoglobin measurements for discriminating between iron deficiency anaemia, beta-thalassaemia minor and lead poisoning has been studied. Lead poisoning could be identified by ZPP greater than 50 micrograms/dl in the presence of normal MCV or ZPP greater than 150 micrograms/dl in the presence of microcytosis (MCV less than 80 fl) with a sensitivity of 97% and specificity 94%. Beta-thalassaemia minor was identified by the coexistence of microcytosis and ZPP less than 50 micrograms/dl wit

The red-cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) concentration is determined in 60 patients with hepatic cirrhosis, in 33 with iron deficiency anaemia and in 86 healthy subjects. In all cases, the erythrocyte volume fraction and the haemoglobin concentration are simultaneously measured, while the cirrhotic patients undergo, at the same time, analyses of the arterial pH, pO2 and pCO2 and of the levels of inorganic phosphate, bicarbonate and lactate in their venous blood. In the 60 cirrhotic patients the red-cell DPG concentration (7.40 +/- 1.23 mmol/l) is significantly higher (P less than 0.001) than

Celiac disease (CD) is a multisystemic disorder with different clinical expressions, from malabsorption with diarrhea, anemia, and nutritional compromise to extraintestinal manifestations. Anemia might be the only clinical expression of the disease, and iron deficiency anemia is considered one of the most frequent extraintestinal clinical manifestations of CD. Therefore, CD should be suspected in the presence of anemia without a known etiology. Assessment of tissue anti-transglutaminase and anti-endomysial antibodies are indicated in these cases and, if positive, digestive endoscopy and intest

Nutritional deficiencies are unrecognized in approximately 50% of patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery. The authors present some of the more common nutritional deficiencies and related complications that can occur in this patient population. Greater awareness of the potential effects of nutritional deficiency after gastric bypass surgery may help physicians better recognize and manage these challenging conditions.

Anemia is an enormous problem worldwide that is worse in the developing countries but by no means lacking in developed countries. Women and children are disproportionately affected. Nutritional anemias, mainly caused by a lack of iron and folate, are largely correctable by dietary improvement, but this socioeconomic change may not be readily achieved. The inherited disorders, the hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias, in their heterozygous forms are beneficial to the affected populations. Prevention of the homozygous forms and the serious diseases that result can only be addressed by education.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency (ID) affects up to 40% of pregnant women in the third trimester, even in highly resourced and iron-supplemented populations, with adverse consequences for maternal health and long-term offspring development. Psychological stress may compromise iron status through hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis dysregulation and inflammation, but no study has directly examined cortisol in relation to iron status across human pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal study examined associations between HPA function and maternal iron status across pregnancy and tested

BACKGROUND: Prenatal prescription of standard iron supplements to prevent iron deficiency appears not to be appropriate for all women and their children, as some women may be at risk of iron deficiency and others at risk of iron excess early in pregnancy. The present study aimed to assess whether prenatal iron supplementation adapted to the needs of each pregnant woman affects their child's neurodevelopment.
METHODS: Follow-up of a community-based RCT involving 503 mother-child pairs. Non-anaemic pregnant women recruited in Tarragona (Spain) early in pregnancy were prescribed a daily iron dos
