Anesthesia of a high-altitude area inhabitant who underwent aortic dissection emergency surgery in a low-altitude area.

Heart surgery in patients from high-altitude areas is more challenging than usual. Few studies have been published on this issue, and none of them have discussed the effect of an altitude change (from high to low altitude) on a patient's physiology or its effects on a patient's perioperative management. Here, we present the case of a 46-year-old man who was a long-time resident of Tibetan area in Sichuan (altitude >3000 m) who underwent Stanford type A aortic dissection emergency surgery on the plain. Anesthetic management occurred through monitoring of the bispectral index (BIS) and transesop

Transcriptional Profiling of Individual Airway Projecting Vagal Sensory Neurons.

Bronchopulmonary sensory neurons are derived from the vagal sensory ganglia and are essential for monitoring the physical and chemical environment of the airways and lungs. Subtypes are heterogenous in their responsiveness to stimuli, phenotype, and developmental origin, but they collectively serve to regulate normal respiratory and pulmonary processes and elicit a diverse range of defensive physiological responses that protect against noxious stimuli. In this study, we aimed to investigate the transcriptional features of vagal bronchopulmonary sensory neurons using single-cell RNA sequencing

Acute cardiovascular and hemodynamic effects of vagus nerve stimulation in conscious hypertensive rats.

Hypertension (HTN) affects over 1 billion people worldwide, with a significant number who are unable to control their blood pressure (BP) with conventional therapies. Recently, novel device-based therapies targeting the autonomic nervous system have been evaluated for treating HTN, including vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). Numerous studies have indicated the beneficial effects of chronic VNS in various models of HTN, however the acute effects of VNS on physiological responses have not been widely investigated. To better understand the acute effects of VNS, this study evaluates cardiovascular an

When couples' hearts beat together: Synchrony in heart rate variability during conflict predicts heightened inflammation throughout the day.

Hostile conflict in marriage can increase risks for disease and mortality. Physiological synchrony between partners-e.g., the linkage between their autonomic fluctuations-appears to capture engagement, or an inability to disengage from an exchange, and thus may amplify the health risks of noxious interactions such as marital conflict. Prior work has not examined the unique health correlates of this physiological signature. To test associations between couples' heart rate variability (HRV) synchrony during conflict and inflammation, 43 married couples engaged in a marital problem discussion whi

HPLC Determination of Bioactive Sulfur Compounds, Amino Acids and Biogenic Amines in Biological Specimens.

There is an increasing interest for analytical methods aimed to detect biological sulfur-containing amines, because of their involvement in human diseases and metabolic disorders. This work describes an improved HPLC method for the determination of sulfur containing amino acids and amines from different biological matrices. We optimized a pre-column derivatization procedure using dabsyl chloride, in which dabsylated products can be monitored spectrophotometrically at 460 nm. This method allows the simultaneous analysis of biogenic amines, amino acids and sulfo-amino compounds including carnosi

Potential of in vivo real-time gastric gas profiling: a pilot evaluation of heat-stress and modulating dietary cinnamon effect in an animal model.

Gastroenterologists are still unable to differentiate between some of the most ordinary disorders of the gut and consequently patients are misdiagnosed. We have developed a swallowable gas sensor capsule for addressing this. The gases of the gut are the by-product of the fermentation processes during digestion, affected by the gut state and can consequently provide the needed information regarding the health of the gut. Here we present the first study on gas sensor capsules for revealing the effect of a medical supplement in an animal (pig) model. We characterise the real-time alterations of g

Evaluation of adaptive relaxation of the rat stomach using an orally inserted balloon instead of surgical intervention by demonstrating the effects of capsaicin and Nω-nitro-L-arginine methylester.

Gastric functions such as adaptive relaxation have usually been monitored in rats using a surgically inserted barostat's balloon. However, surgery causes physiological damage to the rat stomach. This study is an investigation of adaptive relaxation of the rat stomach using a slightly modified balloon, which is introduced into the stomach through the mouth of anesthetized rats without the need for balloon surgery, attached to a brostat. In this case, the balloon was placed between the fore-stomach and the fundus, but towards the fore-stomach. The balloon volume increased gradually just after an

Oxygen-induced Regulation of Na/K ATPase in cerebellar granule cells.

Adjustment of the Na/K ATPase activity to changes in oxygen availability is a matter of survival for neuronal cells. We have used freshly isolated rat cerebellar granule cells to study oxygen sensitivity of the Na/K ATPase function. Along with transport and hydrolytic activity of the enzyme we have monitored alterations in free radical production, cellular reduced glutathione, and ATP levels. Both active K(+) influx and ouabain-sensitive inorganic phosphate production were maximal within the physiological pO(2) range of 3-5 kPa. Transport and hydrolytic activity of the Na/K ATPase was equally

Organic cation transporter 3 (Slc22a3) is implicated in salt-intake regulation.

Organic cation transporters (OCTs) are carrier-type permeases known to participate in general detoxification functions in peripheral tissues. Previous in vitro studies have suggested that OCTs ensure Uptake2, a low-affinity, corticosteroid-sensitive catecholamine removal system, which was characterized initially in sympathetically innervated tissues. Although the presence of both Uptake(2)-like transport and most OCT subtypes has also been demonstrated in the brain, the physiological role of this family of transporters in CNS remained totally unknown. In the present work, we show that the OCT3

The effect of functional occlusal forces on orthodontic tooth movement and tissue recovery in rats.

The influence of physiologic occlusal forces on tissue response to orthodontic tooth movement and its subsequent recovery was investigated in rats. The mandibular incisors were subjected to tipping and intrusive loads for 2 weeks. In 27 animals, the teeth remained in occlusion, while the incisors were shortened out of occlusion in 29. In each group, some rats were killed at the end of the tooth movement process, and the rest were kept alive for a 13-week recovery period. The subgroups were matched with corresponding controls. Tooth intrusion and eruption were monitored throughout the experimen

High 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose accumulation in a case of retroperitoneal fibrosis following resection of carcinoid tumor.

Positron emission tomography (PET) using 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) has been shown to be a highly sensitive diagnostic tool to stage, restage, and monitor the progress of various neoplasms. A number of physiological and non-neoplastic conditions, however, also may be associated with focal accumulation of FDG and can cause false-positive results. This work reports a 52-year-old man who had marked FDG accumulation in carcinoid tumor of the distal ileum. The tumor was resected. A follow-up FDG-PET scan one and a half years later revealed intense FDG accumulation in the abdominal periao

Evaluation of low dose anaphylatoxic peptides in the pathogenesis of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Monitoring of early C5a effects in a guinea-pig in vivo model after i.v. application.

A guinea-pig in vivo model is presented that allows the infusion of purified C5a via a central vein catheter and the monitoring of its effects on granulocytes and platelets, the most important cells in the pathogenesis of several lung disorders, e.g. shock lung. After the infusion of C5a, which was adjusted to a quantity that caused slight and transient alterations of lung physiology, granulocytes disappeared from circulation within 1 min. Simultaneously the granulocyte content of the lung increased about three-fold as judged by histological evaluations. Morphologic destructions were not obser

Brain tissue oxygen monitoring in traumatic brain injury-part II: isolated and combined insults in relation to outcome.

BACKGROUND: The primary aim was to explore the concept of isolated and combined threshold-insults for brain tissue oxygenation (pbtO2) in relation to outcome in traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: A total of 239 TBI patients with data on clinical outcome (GOS) and intracranial pressure (ICP) and pbtO2 monitoring for at least 12 h, who had been treated at the neurocritical care unit, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK, between 2002 and 2022 were included. Outcome was dichotomised into favourable/unfavourable (GOS 4-5/1-3) and survival/mortality (GOS 2-5/1). PbtO2 was studied over the ent

Safety and reproductive performance in sows after vaccination: a randomized controlled trial.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Although reproductive vaccines are essential in swine herd health programs, evidence on their safety across different physiological stages remains limited. This study evaluated the clinical and reproductive safety of Porcilis® EPL in sows and gilts under commercial field conditions. In a randomized, blinded, controlled trial, 200 females were allocated to treated or control groups within five physiological categories, of which 190 completed the study. Sows received a single dose and gilts a two-dose protocol. Clinical parameters (body condition, rectal temperature, general health, feed intake)

Psychological Processes, Not Physiological Parameters, Are Most Important Contributors to Symptom Severity in Patients With Refractory Heartburn/Regurgitation Symptoms.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Physiological and psychological factors have been found to influence esophageal symptom reporting. We aimed to evaluate which of these factors are associated with 3 reflux symptom severity outcomes (ie, Total Reflux, Heartburn, and Sleep Disturbance) through a traditional statistical and a complementary machine-learning approach. METHODS: Consecutive adult patients with refractory heartburn/regurgitation symptoms underwent standard 24-hour pH-impedance monitoring and completed questionnaires assessing past and current gastrointestinal and psychological health. Pneumopericardium following severe thoracic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic pneumopericardium (PPC) is a rare clinical entity associated with chest trauma, resulting from a pleuropericardial connection in the presence of a pneumothorax, interstitial air tracking along the pulmonary perivascular sheaths from ruptured alveoli to the pericardium, or direct trachea-bronchial-pericardial communication.  Our objectives were to describe the modern management approach to PPC and to identify variables that could improve survival with severe thoracic injury. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of the trauma registry between 2015 and 2022 at a Leve

Autonomic Function Following Concussion in Youth Athletes: An Exploration of Heart Rate Variability Using 24-hour Recording Methodology.

Participation in organized sports makes a significant contribution to youth development, but places youth at a higher risk for sustaining a concussion. To date, return-to-activity decision-making has been anchored in the monitoring of self-reported concussion symptoms and neurocognitive testing. However, multi-modal assessments that corroborate objective physiological measures with traditional subjective symptom reporting are needed and can be valuable. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive physiological indicator of the autonomic nervous system, capturing the reciprocal interplay bet

Optimization of perfusate pH to improve microdialysis recovery of lipophilic compounds.

INTRODUCTION: Microdialysis (MD) allows sampling of compounds in-vivo from tissues' interstitial fluid. However, molecules insoluble at physiological pH have usually extremely low recovery. The addition of albumin to the perfusate or the use of isotonic lipoemulsion improves recovery of these molecules although it requires a cleaning step before HPLC analysis. This study investigates the possibility of improving the MD recovery of compounds insoluble at physiological pH but soluble at a different pH. The probe is perfused with an isotonic solution adjusted to pH values at which the compound ha
