The prognosis and clinical and pathological findings in 93 patients with breast cancer who had taken contraceptive steroids before diagnosis (study group) were compared with those in 93 control patients, also with breast cancer, matched for age and parity. The tenth case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the ureter is reported, and previous cases are summarized. It is the first example studied by percutaneous pyelography and ultrasonography. The former was more informative than retrograde ureterography. The ultrasonic study suggested a cystic lesion rather than the solid tumor encountered. Nephroureterectomy, selective para-aortic node dissection, and radiotherapy were used, but distant metastasis and death ensured fifteen months later.

A new technique of axillary lymphoscintigraphy has been investigated in thirty patients with breast carcinoma. Intradermal injection of 100 muCi technetium-99m antimony sulphide colloid in 0.1 ml buffer produced satisfactory scans of axillary lymph-nodes in twenty-seven patients (90%). As periodic evaluation of the causes of death in cancer patients may provide guidelines for further research on supportive care in cancer, the authors studied autopsy records of 144 mammary-cancer patients from the past ten years. Computed tomography of the chest wall has been mentioned in the literature, but the emphasis has been on evaluation of diseases of the pleura and mediastinum and depiction of metastatic nodules. The authors have attempted to demonstrate the usefulness of CT in the detection and treatment of chest wall disease and show that the incidence of involvement is great enough to warrant evaluation of the chest wall on all CT images of this region.

Seven of ten women with oral-contraceptive-associated liver tumours were found to have hepatocellular carcinoma. The diagnosis was often delayed, although hepatomegaly was always present on examination, and liver-function tests and erythrocyte sedimentation-rates were abnormal in most cases. Other investigations, including routine technetium liver scans and biopsy, were sometimes misleading. There were important differences in alpha-fetoprotein concentration, vascularity on angiography, and survival between liver tumours in pill users and non-users.

A 64-year-old woman presented with retroperitoneal lymphoma metastatic to the left ureter. Lymphoma was not diagnosed and her clinical course was not fully explained until after surgery. The lack of superficial lymphoma delayed diagnosis and therefore prevented effective treatment. Her situation became unmanageable when it was complicated by bacteremia (E coli) and fungemia (Candida albicans).

Two hundred and ninety-five patients who underwent resection for carcinoma of the lung are reviewed, with a particular view to size of tumour and survival rate. The carcinomas were divided into four groups by size. It was found that the larger the tumour the worse was the prognosis. Hypophysectomy was performed in six patients with advanced carcinoma other than from breast and prostate gland to alleviate pain.
