OBJECTIVE: To describe the sonographic and power Doppler features of pelvic relapses in endometrial and cervical cancer.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the preoperative transvaginal sonographic reports of 45 women with a histological diagnosis of pelvic relapse. The three diameters of the lesion were recorded; then the shape, margins, content (solid or cystic), and location were analyzed. A subjective assessment of the vascularization (vascular score) was obtained with power Doppler.
RESULTS: Twenty-six patients had pelvic recurrence from endometrial cancer and 19 from cervical cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The results of total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer were first reported 20 years ago. The superior outcome in the original two papers was attributed to the complete excision of the mesorectum, preference for anterior resection over abdominoperineal resection, application of cytotoxic solutions to eradicate exfoliated tumour cells and specialisation in rectal cancer surgery. Fifty-five patients were included in an extended follow-up after radical radiation therapy (RRT) for localized prostatic cancer (T1-3, Nx, M0). Local cure was assessed by a combination of digital rectal examination (DRE), transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) and systematic 'mapping' with TRUS-guided core biopsies (TGCB). A percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) was placed by the "pull technique" in a 67-year old patient before initiation of palliative radiation therapy of a gastric adenocarcinoma invading the distal esophagus. A tumor metastasis developed in the peristomal area and around the gastrocutaneous fistula tract; it was most likely caused by implantation of tumor tissue adhering to the PEG tube. This complication of PEG placement appears to be very rare.

Detection of persistent or recurrent prostate cancer by digital rectal examination (DRE) after definitive radiotherapy is difficult. With the availability of transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS), the detection of prostate cancer has improved substantially. In this paper we examine 68 patients who had undergone radical abdominal hysterectomy according to Wertheim-Meigs for Ib-II cervical carcinoma. Post-surgical stage was T1bN0M0 in 35 patients, T1bN1M0 in 3, T2aN0M0 in 7, T2aN1M0 in 6, T2bN0M0 in 13, T2bN1M0 in 4. All the patients, except 5 with ureteral fistulas, had high energy external pelvic irradiation, reaching a dose of 45 Gy. Up to December 1986, the neoplasia had relapsed in 10 patient (14.7%).
