Case of Poliomyelitis Caused by Significantly Diverged Derivative of the Poliovirus Type 3 Vaccine Sabin Strain Circulating in the Orphanage.

Significantly divergent polioviruses (VDPV) derived from the oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) from Sabin strains, like wild polioviruses, are capable of prolonged transmission and neuropathology. This is mainly shown for VDPV type 2. Here we describe a molecular-epidemiological investigation of a case of VDPV type 3 circulation leading to paralytic poliomyelitis in a child in an orphanage, where OPV has not been used. Samples of feces and blood serum from the patient and 52 contacts from the same orphanage were collected twice and investigated. The complete genome sequencing was performed for fiv…

Increased and Decreased Superficial White Matter Structural Connectivity in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder.

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are often conceptualized as "disconnection syndromes," with substantial evidence of abnormalities in deep white matter tracts, forming the substrates of long-range connectivity, seen in both disorders. However, the study of superficial white matter (SWM) U-shaped short-range tracts remained challenging until recently, although findings from postmortem studies suggest they are likely integral components of SZ and BD neuropathology. This diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) study aimed to investigate SWM microstructure in vivo in both SZ and BD for the fi…

Premature vascular disease in young adult stroke: a pathology-based case series.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of modifiable vascular risk factors is increasing in young adults and may contribute to the growing frequency of stroke in this population. The neuropathology and end-organ damage profile of young adult stroke patients with clinically advanced atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis has not been studied. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients aged 18-60 years admitted to our hospital from 1995 to 2017 with recurrent ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes, fatal stroke, or stroke associated with advanced small vessel disease (SVD) on brain MRI, who had no evidenc…

Neuroimaging characteristics and long-term prognosis of myxoma-related intracranial diseases.

PURPOSE: Myxoma-related intracranial diseases were rarely documented in history. The main purpose of our study is to provide a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of the pathogenesis, imaging features, surgical procedures and pathology of such patients through long-term follow-up. METHODS: From March 2012 to July 2018, baseline information that included neuroimaging and neuropathology data from 12 cardiac myxoma patients with neurological symptoms were retrospectively analysed, and the treatment options were discussed. Nine patients underwent long-term postoperative follow-up. RESU…

Contribution of Fibrinogen to Inflammation and Neuronal Density in Human Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability, particularly among the young. Despite this, no disease-specific treatments exist. Recently, blood-brain barrier disruption and parenchymal fibrinogen deposition have been reported in acute traumatic brain injury and in long-term survival; however, their contribution to the neuropathology of TBI remains unknown. The presence of fibrinogen-a well-documented activator of microglia/macrophages-may be associated with neuroinflammation, and neuronal/axonal injury. To test this hypothesis, cases of human TBI with survival times …

These findings highlighted the role of the orbitofrontal cortex in the neuropathology of the comorbidity of insomnia and depression. Our findings provide new insights into the understanding of the brain mechanism underlying comorbidity of insomnia and depression.

Insular changes induced by electroconvulsive therapy response to symptom improvements in schizophrenia.

Although modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) has been employed as a treatment strategy and to resolve medication resistant symptoms in schizophrenia (SZ), its action mechanisms remain unclear. The insula has been demonstrated to associate with clinical symptoms and neuropathology in SZ. This study examined whether insular changes response to MECT outcomes in SZ. Forty-two SZ were divided into two groups according to their treatment strategies. One group (MSZ, n = 21) received 4-weeks MECT together with antipsychotics; another group (DSZ, n = 21) was treated only with antipsychotics. Twen…

CONCLUSIONS: Optic nerve hypoplasia is a complex neuropathology of the subcortical visual system involving RGC loss, axonopathy, and synaptopathy and originates at a developmental stage in mice that corresponds to the late third trimester development in humans.

Synaptopathic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and dementia: Insights from Huntington's disease.
