[Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on event-related potentials of mental rotation].

There are few researches on the modulation effect of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) on complex spatial cognition. Especially, the influence of tDCS on the neural electrophysiological response in spatial cognition is not yet clear. This study selected the classic spatial cognition task paradigm (three-dimensional mental rotation task) as the research object. By comparing the changes in behavior and event-related potentials in different modes of tDCS before, during and after the application of tDCS, this study analyzed the behavioral and neurophysiological effects of tDCS on menta

PTSD and crime propensity: Stress systems, brain structures, and the nature of the relationship.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most commonly found disorder among the prison population; however, research has been slow to study it as a potential cause of crime. This review examines the neurophysiological changes in the organism associated with PTSD and connects them to crime and antisocial behaviour. Patients with PTSD suffer from a hyperactive sympathetic nervous system (SNS), an overactive amygdala that results in a hypoactive hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal (HPA) axis, and a reduced hippocampal volume. All these features have been separately associated with aggressivity and

When Breathing Becomes a Challenge: A Case of Congenital Myasthenia Gravis in an Indian Neonate With a DOK-7 Gene Mutation.

A rare neuromuscular condition known as congenital myasthenia gravis (CMG) affects some people from birth or very soon after. It results in fatigue and muscle weakness because of genetic abnormalities that interfere with the neuromuscular junction's ability to function, where the nerves and muscles connect. Even among those who have the same genetic mutation, the severity of CMG symptoms might differ considerably. The most typical signs of CMG include eyelid drooping, breathing issues, muscle weakness and weariness, and difficulties swallowing. Clinical examinations, neurophysiologic tests, an

Poor reactivity of posterior electroencephalographic alpha rhythms during the eyes open condition in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's disease.

Here, we hypothesized that the reactivity of posterior resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms during the transition from eyes-closed to -open condition might be lower in patients with Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) than in patients with Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). A Eurasian database provided clinical-demographic-rsEEG datasets in 73 PDD patients, 35 ADD patients, and 25 matched cognitively unimpaired (Healthy) persons. The eLORETA freeware was used to estimate cortical rsEEG sources. Results showed substantial (greater than -10%) reduction (reactivity) in the

Frontotemporal Dementia, Where Do We Stand? A Narrative Review.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disease of growing interest, since it accounts for up to 10% of middle-age-onset dementias and entails a social, economic, and emotional burden for the patients and caregivers. It is characterised by a (at least initially) selective degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobe, generally leading to behavioural alterations, speech disorders, and psychiatric symptoms. Despite the recent advances, given its extreme heterogeneity, an overview that can bring together all the data currently available is still lacking. Here, we aim to provide a

Common and unique dysconnectivity profiles of dorsal and median raphe in Parkinson's disease.

The serotonergic (5-HT) system, which undergoes degeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD), is involved in the pathogenesis of motor and nonmotor symptoms. The dorsal raphe (DR) and median raphe (MR) nuclei are the main source of 5-HT neurons, however, brain connectivity changes in these two nuclei have not been delineated in PD. Here we used resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) to characterize functional connectivity profiles of DR and MR and further examine the associations between dysconnectivity of raphe nuclei and clinical phenotypes of PD. We found that DR and MR commonly hypo-connected with the s

Levetiracetam Modulates EEG Microstates in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

To determine the effects of Levetiracetam (LEV) therapy using EEG microstates analysis in a population of newly diagnosed Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) patients. We hypothesized that the impact of LEV therapy on the electrical activity of the brain can be globally explored using EEG microstates. Twenty-seven patients with TLE were examined. We performed resting-state microstate EEG analysis and compared microstate metrics between the EEG performed at baseline (EEGpre) and after 3 months of LEV therapy (EEGpost). The microstates A, B, C and D emerged as the most stable. LEV induced a reduction o

Factorial Model of Obese Adolescents: The Role of Body Image Concerns and Selective Depersonalization-A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship binding body weight to psychological well-being is unclear. The present study aims at identifying the contribution, and specificity, of some dimensions (i.e., eating-related symptoms, body image disorders, eating habits, personality traits, and emotional difficulties) characterizing the psychological profile of obese adolescents (749 participants, 325 females; 58.3% normal-weight, 29.9% overweight, and 11.7% obese; mean age = 16.05, SD = 0.82). METHODS: By introducing the scores obtained by standardized self-report tools into a generalized linear model, a factoria

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) in Term and Preterm Infants.

Hypoxic-ischemic syndrome (HIS) and Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are conditions that affect term and premature babies, with different pathophysiology and different brain disorders. HIE appears in 1-6 / 1000 live births and 26/1000 live births in developing countries. 15-20% die in the early neonatal period, while surviving babies have severe neurological impairment, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, visual and hearing impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual, behavioural, and social disorders. The hypoxic-ischemic event occurs before, during or after birth. The reasons may be

Monitoring scoliosis and other spinal deformity surgeries.

Surgery to correct a spinal deformity incurs a risk of injury to the spinal cord and roots. Injuries include postoperative paraplegia. Surgery for cervical myelopathy also incurs risk for postoperative motor deficits, as well as nerve injury most commonly at the C5 root. Risks can be mitigated by monitoring the nervous system during surgery. Ideally, monitoring detects an impending injury in time to intervene and correct the impairment before it becomes permanent. Monitoring includes several modalities of testing. Somatosensory evoked potentials measure axonal conduction in the spinal cord pos

Epilepsy and brain network hubs.

Epilepsy is a disorder of brain networks. A better understanding of structural and dynamic network properties may improve epilepsy diagnosis, treatment, and prognostics. Hubs are brain regions with high connectivity to other parts of the brain and are typically situated along the brain's most efficient communication pathways, supporting large-scale brain wiring and many higher order neural functions. The visualization and analysis of hubs offers a perspective on regional and global network organization and can provide novel insights into brain disorders and epilepsy. By notably supporting the

Noninvasive neuromodulation of the prefrontal cortex in mental health disorders.

More than any other brain region, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) gives rise to the singularity of human experience. It is therefore frequently implicated in the most distinctly human of all disorders, those of mental health. Noninvasive neuromodulation, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) among others, can-unlike pharmacotherapy-directly target the PFC and its neural circuits. Direct targeting enables significantly greater on-target therapeutic effects compared with off-target adverse ef

Electrical stimulation of the nucleus basalis of meynert: a systematic review of preclinical and clinical data.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) has been clinically investigated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD). However, the clinical effects are highly variable, which questions the suggested basic principles underlying these clinical trials. Therefore, preclinical and clinical data on the design of NBM stimulation experiments and its effects on behavioral and neurophysiological aspects are systematically reviewed here. Animal studies have shown that electrical stimulation of the NBM enhanced cognition, increased the release of acetylcholine, en

Presymptomatic training mitigates functional deficits in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Mutations in the X-linked gene MECP2 cause Rett syndrome, a progressive neurological disorder in which children develop normally for the first one or two years of life before experiencing profound motor and cognitive decline1-3. At present there are no effective treatments for Rett syndrome, but we hypothesized that using the period of normal development to strengthen motor and memory skills might confer some benefit. Here we find, using a mouse model of Rett syndrome, that intensive training beginning in the presymptomatic period dramatically improves the performance of specific motor and mem

Focal cortical dysplasia: an update on diagnosis and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Focal cortical dysplasias (FCDs) represent the most common etiology in pediatric drug-resistant focal epilepsies undergoing surgical treatment. The localization, extent and histopathological features of FCDs are considerably variable. Somatic mosaic mutations of genes that encode proteins in the PI3K-AKTmTOR pathway, which also includes the tuberous sclerosis associated genes TSC1 and TSC2, have been implicated in FCD type II in a substantial subset of patients. Surgery is the principal therapeutic option for FCD-related epilepsy. Advanced neurophysiological and neuroimaging tech

EEG phase-amplitude coupling to stratify encephalopathy severity in the developing brain.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is difficult to classify within the narrow therapeutic window of hypothermia. Neurophysiological biomarkers are needed for timely differentiation of encephalopathy severity within the short therapeutic window for initiation of hypothermia therapy. METHODS: A novel analysis of mean Phase Amplitude Coupling index, PACm, of amplitudes high frequencies (12-30 Hz) coupled with phases of low (1,2 Hz) frequencies was calculated from the 6 h EEG recorded during the first day of life. PACm values were compared to identify differences between m

Esophageal afferent innervation and its role in gastro-esophageal reflux disease symptoms.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the wide prevalence of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying heartburn perception in the esophagus of patients with GERD remains incompletely understood. Recent studies have highlighted the potential influence sensory afferent nerves innervating the oesophageal epithelium may have on heartburn pathogenesis. The purpose of this review is to consider the current understanding of esophageal afferent neuronal innervation, including the nociceptive role of acid-sensing receptors expressed on these sensory nerves, in relation

Fibromyalgia Detection Based on EEG Connectivity Patterns.

OBJECTIVE: The identification of a complementary test to confirm the diagnosis of FM. The diagnosis of fibromyalgia (FM) is based on clinical features, but there is still no consensus, so patients and clinicians might benefit from such a test. Recent findings showed that pain lies in neuronal bases (pain matrices) and, in the long term, chronic pain modifies the activity and dynamics of brain structures. Our hypothesis is that patients with FM present lower levels of brain activity and therefore less connectivity than controls. METHODS: We registered the resting state EEG of 23 patients with
