The Role of Innate Lymphoid Cells in Autoimmune, Allergic and Infectious Diseases: A Systematic Review.

Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) are tissue-resident immune cells that functionally mirror CD4+ T helper (Th)1, Th2 and Th17 cells, and are accordingly classified as ILC1, ILC2 and ILC3. Additional members of the ILC family include lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi) cells and natural killer (NK) cells. Abundant at barrier surfaces, ILCs are among the first responders to pathogens, contributing to tissue homeostasis and adaptive immunity. This systematic review, conducted following PRISMA guidelines, synthesises human clinical evidence on ILCs in autoimmune, allergic and infectious diseases. Relevant pe

Assistive communication technologies for individuals with multiple disabilities: an evidence mapping review informing future AI-enabled AAC.

OBJECTIVE: Assistive communication technologies are central to participation for individuals with multiple disabilities. Although artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities are increasingly proposed within augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, empirical evidence for this population remains critically limited. This evidence mapping review synthesised research on aided AAC interventions involving individuals with multiple disabilities to identify technological trends, implementation patterns, and evidence gaps relevant to the future development of AI-enabled AAC systems. False positives in transfusion-transmitted infection proficiency testing due to matrix effects in external quality assessment samples: lessons for clinical laboratories.

INTRODUCTION: Proficiency testing, a cornerstone of external quality assessment, benchmarks laboratory performance and detects systematic errors. Although extremely rare, matrix-related interference in proficiency testing samples can produce misleading results across platforms, highlighting the importance of sample commutability. METHODS: During a proficiency testing cycle for transfusion-transmitted infections, a blood center observed uniform low hepatitis B surface antigen reactivity in 5 blinded samples on the Alinity i chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) platform (Abbott). "They're intertwined really… they make each other worse": An interpretative phenomenological analysis of living with epilepsy in the context of homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness, or "unhoused people", are eight times more likely to have a diagnosis of epilepsy compared to the general population. However, little is known about how epilepsy is experienced and understood within the context of homelessness. This study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore the lived experience of epilepsy among six unhoused men in Ireland. Four group experiential themes were developed: Diagnosis as an Explanation with No Way Out, Dual Loss of Autonomy, Public Seizures and Social Devaluation, and Living Within Constrained Survival Pathways

Frail older adults' challenges in using telehealth services: A scoping review.

ObjectiveTelehealth is increasingly used to expand access to healthcare, but rapid digitalization risks exacerbating exclusion among frail older adults, who often face intersecting limitations related to health, resources, and digital competence. As this group frequently has complex care needs, mapping their experiences is essential to ensure equitable access to digital care. The aim was to map the challenges frail older adults experience when using telehealth services.MethodsThis scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Towards quality indicators in palliative care education: An umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: The global need for palliative care is increasing. To respond effectively, all healthcare professionals who care for persons with serious illnesses should be trained to provide core palliative care. Despite increasing recognition of its importance, education remains inconsistently implemented. OBJECTIVES: To explore and identify the essential elements that define and support palliative care education, and to propose a preliminary typology of structural, process, and outcome quality indicators. DESIGN: An umbrella review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute metho

INVESTIGATION OF ANESTHESIA TECHNIQUES IN PAPER KITE BUTTERFLIES (IDEA LEUCONOE).

Despite the frequency of invertebrates in research, zoological, and personal collections, sedation and anesthesia in these species remains poorly studied. This study assessed anesthetic techniques in paper kite butterflies (Idea leuconoe). Thirty-six recently emerged butterflies were individually placed in 1.9 L air-tight containers and randomly exposed to one of six treatments (n = 6/group): 5% isoflurane via vaporizer (2 L min-1, fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) 1.0); (V), 0.5 mL (CB0.5) or 3.0 mL (CB3) liquid isoflurane on a cotton ball (FiO2 0.21); 100% carbon dioxide via flowmeter (2 L

Orthognathic Surgery in Syndromic Craniosynostosis: A Narrative Review of Predictive Factors and Outcomes.

Syndromic craniosynostosis presents significant surgical challenges, requiring staged management from infancy through adolescence. Early interventions such as cranial vault expansion and midface advancement address intracranial pressure, airway compromise, and psychosocial concerns, yet often residual midface retrusion and malocclusion persists or re-develops by skeletal maturity. Orthognathic surgery is therefore frequently required, but early predictors of this long-term need remain poorly defined. For this narrative review, relevant English-language articles published between 2004 and 2024

Prenatal biliary imaging for the diagnosis of biliary atresia: a protocol for a multicentre prospective diagnostic accuracy study.

INTRODUCTION: Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare but serious infantile cholangiopathy requiring timely diagnosis and surgical intervention. However, current screening methods are limited by their postnatal initiation. By contrast, antenatal imaging is increasingly considered promising due to growing evidence of a prenatal onset of BA, although high-quality diagnostic evidence remains scarce. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of antenatal biliary imaging features for the detection of BA. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a multicentre, prospective cohort diagnostic accuracy study

Plasma-activated water as a wound rinse solution in patients with diabetes-related foot ulcers in two Australian hospitals: study protocol for a phase I double-blinded, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients living with diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFU) often have non-healing wounds that, despite ongoing clinical management and wound debridement as standard of care, can proceed to infection and lower limb amputation. Additionally, treatment guidelines do not recommend most topical antibiotics or antiseptic treatments, limiting complements to surgical wound debridement. We present a protocol for a phase I randomised controlled trial testing the safety and efficacy of plasma-activated water as an antiseptic for preventing infection and promoting ulcer healing. METHODS AND AN

Crossing the chasm: engaging Black men survivors of gun violence in mental health services.

BACKGROUND: Despite being high risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, Black men survivors of gun violence, and particularly young men aged 18-24, seldom participate in mental health services after injury. The aim of this study was to identify barriers to participation in mental health services for this population. METHODS: Over a 2-year period, 1 hour-long focus group was conducted with three counselors of the local hospital-based violence intervention program and 21 individual, semistructured in-depth interviews were held with Black men who were hospitalized for a firearm-related injury. Recovery colleges as enablers of personal recovery: qualitative evaluation of the development of a recovery college in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, maintaining high standards of mental healthcare faces challenges due to an increasing demand for mental healthcare and a focus on symptomatic recovery rather than personal growth and improvement in the quality of life. Recovery colleges, which emphasize personal recovery through hope, autonomy, and empowerment, offer a transformative approach by fostering an environment where individuals with mental distress can learn and thrive. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of students and relevant stakeholders (like family members or regional social wor
