"We know this will be hard at the beginning, but better in the long term": understanding PrEP uptake in the general population in Eswatini.

Information regarding HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for the general population is largely lacking, because the majority of PrEP demonstration projects have focused on key populations. This qualitative study examines barriers and facilitators to PrEP uptake and adherence among the general population in Eswatini, where PrEP is offered through public-sector primary-care clinics. We analysed 106 semi-structured in-depth interviews with healthcare workers (n = 26), stakeholders (n = 30), and clients who initiated, continued, declined or discontinued PrEP (n = 50). Some healthcare workers and

Trends and risk factors for mortality in elderly burns patients: A retrospective review.

INTRODUCTION: The elderly experience higher mortality rates and poorer outcomes compared to younger burn survivors with similar injuries. METHODS: This epidemiological study reviewed records of all admitted elderly burn patients collected from five burns facilities in Israel between 1997-2016. Collected data was limited to the population aged 20+, focused on the population aged 60+. RESULTS: Mortality rates for elderly patients increased with TBSA and increases with age. Regression analyses demonstrated a decrease in mortality of 2.9% (p=0.013) per 5 years, an overall decrease of 11.6% over

Fatigue and pain in children and adults with multiple osteochondromas in Norway, a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Osteochondromas (MO) is a rare skeletal disorder frequently needing orthopaedic surgery. High prevalence of pain has been reported, however fatigue has not previously been investigated. PURPOSE: Our aims were to investigate prevalence of fatigue and pain in Norwegian children and adults with MO. Furthermore to compare prevalence of fatigue with reported prevalence in other groups and explore some factors that may contribute to fatigue in this population. METHODS: Questionnaire data was obtained from 11 children and 21 adults, approximately one third of the estimated MO p

Whole-genome resequencing of Trichophyton rubrum provides insights into population differentiation and drug resistance.

Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum) is anthropophilic fungus and thus a very common cause of dermatophyte infections around the world. Infection of T. rubrum could result in conditions such as tinea capitis, tinea corporis, tinea inguinalis, tinea manus, tinea unguium, or tinea pedis. Because of this, the resistance of T. rubrum to antifungal therapies has drawn extensive research interest. However, the pathogenic characteristics of T. rubrum, such as site of infections, geographic location and host groups, have yet to be explored. In this study, the whole genome of 48 strains from different regio

Preventing and responding to depression, self-harm, and suicide in older people living in long term care settings: a systematic review.

Objective: The well documented demographic shift to an aging population means that more people will in future be in need of long term residential care. Previous research has reported an increased risk of mental health issues and suicidal ideation among older people living in residential care settings. However, there is little information on the actual prevalence of depression, self-harm, and suicidal behavior in this population, how it is measured and how care homes respond to these issues. Method: This systematic review of international literature addressed three research questions relating t

Exposure to Toxoplasma gondii in the Roma and Non-Roma Inhabitants of Slovakia: A Cross-Sectional Seroprevalence Study.

The lifestyle, health and social status of the Roma are generally below the standards characteristic for the non-Roma population. This study aimed to find out the seropositivity to Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) in the population of Roma living in segregated settlements and to compare it with the prevalence of antibodies in the non-Roma population from the catchment area of eastern Slovakia. The seroprevalence of antibodies to T. gondii was significantly higher in the Roma group (45.0%) than in non-Roma inhabitants (24.1%). A statistically significant difference was also recorded between the tw

H1/H2 MAPT haplotype and Parkinson's disease in Mexican mestizo population.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by bradykinesia, resting tremor, rigidity and postural instability as well as early symptoms. Previous studies that evaluated the association between H1/H2 MAPT haplotype and PD were mostly conducted in European populations in which the H1 haplotype was a reported risk factor for PD. Despite those findings, some studies have suggested that the association may be ethnically dependent. Since studies conducted in Latin American population have been scarce, we genotyped the H1/H2 MAPT haplotype in Mexican mestizo population as part of a PD case-control stu

Brettanomyces bruxellensis population survey reveals a diploid-triploid complex structured according to substrate of isolation and geographical distribution.

Brettanomyces bruxellensis is a unicellular fungus of increasing industrial and scientific interest over the past 15 years. Previous studies revealed high genotypic diversity amongst B. bruxellensis strains as well as strain-dependent phenotypic characteristics. Genomic assemblies revealed that some strains harbour triploid genomes and based upon prior genotyping it was inferred that a triploid population was widely dispersed across Australian wine regions. We performed an intraspecific diversity genotypic survey of 1488 B. bruxellensis isolates from 29 countries, 5 continents and 9 different

Origin of the myotonic dystrophy type 1 mutation in Mexican population and influence of Amerindian ancestry on CTG repeat allelic distribution.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 is caused by expansion of a CTG trinucleotide repeat situated in the DMPK gene. Worldwide genetic studies suggest a single or limited number of mutational events cause the disease. However, distribution of CTG alleles and disease incidence varies among ethnicities. Due to the great ethnic diversity of the Mexican population, the present study was aimed at analyzing the impact of different lineages in shaping the CTG-repeat allelic distribution in the contemporary Mexican-Mestizo population as well as to shed light on the DM1 ancestral origin. Distribution of CTG-repea

Risk of uterine, ovarian and breast cancer following pelvic inflammatory disease: a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is characterized by infection and inflammation of the upper genital tract in women and is associated with health sequelae. We used a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study to explore the relationship between PID and the subsequent development of gynecological cancers including ovarian, breast or uterine cancer. METHODS: We identified subjects diagnosed with PID between January 1st, 2000 and December 31st, 2002 in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. A comparison cohort constructed for patients without PID were ma

Prevalence of Skin and Skin-Related Diseases in the Rochester Epidemiology Project and a Comparison with Other Published Prevalence Studies.

In Olmsted County, Minn., USA, reliable, population-based epidemiologic research studies can be performed because of a unique medical records linkage system, the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP). Our objective was to summarize the epidemiologic data describing the prevalence of skin and skin-related diseases derived from the REP and to compare the findings with those from other studies worldwide. Retrospectively, we reviewed the results of population-based REP studies reporting the prevalence of skin and skin-related diseases over more than 4 decades and compared them to other published pr

Overview of the tuberculosis burden in prison institutions in Japan, 2000-2012.

BACKGROUND: Although prison inmates in Japan are considered a high-risk group for tuberculosis (TB), little is known about the overall TB burden in prisons. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence and epidemiological characteristics of TB among inmates in Japan, and to perform an ecological analysis to identify an association between socio-economic factors and TB incidence in prisons. METHOD: Using the annual reports on correctional statistics, we calculated TB incidence among inmates between 2000 and 2012. Multivariate analysis was conducted with selected socio-economic variables to examine th

M2/ANXA5 haplotype as a predisposition factor in Malay women and couples experiencing recurrent spontaneous abortion: a pilot study.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a prevalent condition among the Malay population of Malaysia, where carriage risk of conventional hereditary thrombophilia factors has been generally ruled out. The contribution of M2/ANXA5, a common haplotype in the annexin A5 gene promoter, was evalauted for RSA in Malay. Seventy-seven women who had experienced two or more unexplained RSA and 41 available male partners were selected for study, with 360 population controls recruited from healthy Malay individuals. Incidence of M2 carriage and odds ratios were calculated between control and patient group

Population-based frequency of surfactant dysfunction mutations in a native Chinese cohort.

BACKGROUND: Rare mutations in surfactant-associated genes contribute to neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. The frequency of mutations in these genes in the Chinese population is unknown. METHODS: We obtained blood spots from the Guangxi Neonatal Screening Center in Nanning, China that included Han (n=443) and Zhuang (n=313) ethnic groups. We resequenced all exons of the surfactant proteins-B (SFTPB), -C (SFTPC), and the ATP-binding cassette member A3 (ABCA3) genes and compared the frequencies of 5 common and all rare variants. RESULTS: We found minor differences in the frequencies of th
