Challenges experienced by patients with hypertension in Ghana: A qualitative inquiry.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (HPT) is an essential public health problem affecting both lower and middle-income countries disproportionately. Evidence suggests that HPT is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease. Yet, challenges faced by patients with HPT in Ghana are not sufficiently explored. This study, documents the challenges patients with HPT face in Ghana. METHODS: We used an explorative descriptive qualitative design. Face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 patients with HPT. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. A themat

Impact of Confinement in Patients under Long-Term Noninvasive Ventilation during the First Wave of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic: A Remarkable Resilience.

BACKGROUND: During the first wave of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Switzerland, confinement was imposed to limit transmission and protect vulnerable persons. These measures may have had a negative impact on perceived quality of care and symptoms in patients with chronic disorders. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether patients under long-term home noninvasive ventilation (LTHNIV) for chronic respiratory failure (CRF) were negatively affected by the 56-day confinement (March-April 2020). METHODS: A questionnaire-based survey exploring mood disturbances (HAD), symptom scores related to NIV (S3-NIV), a

Technology Can Augment, but Not Replace, Critical Human Skills Needed for Patient Care.

The practice of medicine is changing rapidly as a consequence of electronic health record adoption, new technologies for patient care, disruptive innovations that breakdown professional hierarchies, and evolving societal norms. Collectively, these have resulted in the modification of the physician's role as the gatekeeper for health care, increased shift-based care, and amplified interprofessional team-based care. Technological innovations present opportunities as well as challenges. Artificial intelligence, which has great potential, has already transformed some tasks, particularly those invo

A constellation of orthopaedic deformities in connection with cartilage oligomeric matrix protein mutation.

BACKGROUND: Trendelenburg's gait can be observed in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, antalgic gait observed in osteoarthropathy and waddling gait is usually seen in genu varum and circumduction gait in patients with genu valgum. Disabling pain was a prime manifestation in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Limited joint range of motion with an inability to bear full weight on an affected extremity with swaying and wide-based gait is seen in patients with malalignment of the lower limbs. All the above-mentioned deformities have been labelled as idiopathic. The main objective of this article i

Pain, fatigue and functional disability are associated with higher educational needs in systemic sclerosis: a cross-sectional study.

In the process of the planned and systematic education of patients/families, it is extremely important to identify patients' health problems as well as their needs and expectations. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between functional disability, health problems and perceived educational needs in people with systemic sclerosis (SSc). This was a cross-sectional analytic study conducted in six rheumatology centers in Poland. Functional disability was measured using HAQ-DI, and the magnitude of other health problems (pain, fatigue, intestinal problems, breathing proble

Exploring the views of Swedish medical students on physician-assisted dying: a quantitative and qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Physician-assisted dying (PAD) remains prohibited in Sweden despite increasing public and professional support, and ongoing societal debate. Since medical students are future physicians, they constitute a relevant group for studying potential shifting attitudes to PAD. The present study examined Swedish medical students' attitudes toward PAD, explored how ethical reasoning and individual characteristics relate to these attitudes, and assessed whether value-laden terminology influenced responses. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted among medical students fr

Experiences of New Zealand Podiatrists Providing Podiatry Care to People With Foot Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Current care provided by health professionals for individuals with osteoarthritis (OA) is inconsistent with clinical guideline recommendations. Although OA guidelines have been developed for more commonly studied joints such as the knee and hip, foot OA remains comparatively underrepresented. Despite its high prevalence and significant impact on functional ability, foot OA lacks standardised classification criteria. The absence of clinical guidelines for foot OA underscores its importance as a research priority. Understanding current assessment and management strategies is crucial

Healthcare professionals produce abounding textual data in their daily clinical practice. Text mining can yield valuable insights from unstructured data. Extracting insights from multiple information sources is a major challenge in computational medicine. In this study, our objective was to illustrate how combining text mining techniques with statistical methodologies can yield new insights and contribute to the development of neurological and neuromuscular-related health information. We demonstrate how to utilize and derive knowledge from medical text, identify patient groups with similar dia

Determinants of Rabies Post-exposure Prophylaxis Drop-Out in the Region of San-Pedro, Côte d'Ivoire.

ABSTRACT: Despite the fact that death from rabies is 100% preventable with a course of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment, canine rabies still causes about 59,000 human deaths worldwide annually, half of which are occurring in Africa. In Côte d'Ivoire, rabies remains a threat partly due to the high drop-out rate of the life-saving human PEP treatment among people exposed to dog bites. Each year, half of the victims starting treatment, do not complete the course. The current study therefore assessed the determinants for drop-out of the life-saving treatment among people exposed to rabies

Sialorrhea: a review of a vexing, often unrecognized sign of oropharyngeal and esophageal disease.

Saliva is produced by the major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual), as well as several smaller glands. Salivary flow can be altered by multiple entities. There is much written regarding xerostomia ("dry mouth"), the condition related to inhibited or decreased salivary flow. This condition is widely recognized in certain systemic diseases, particularly Sjögren syndrome, diabetes mellitus, after anticholinergic, antihistamine, and decongestant medications, as well as states of enhanced sympathetic drive, such as anxiety or emotional disturbances and various other psychosoci

Association of Female Sexual Dysfunction with Medical Conditions, Life Changes, and Gynecological Conditions: A Cross-Sectional Study of Women.

BACKGROUND: Female sexual dysfunction is a prevalent medical condition defined as a distressing problem with sexual pain, desire, arousal, or orgasm; however, little epidemiological research on dysfunction accounts for participants' distress. Our objective was to evaluate associations between potential risk factors and sexual dysfunction among women, in order to inform clinical care. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey of women in Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania screened for sexual dysfunction using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and Female Sexual Distress Scale (FSDS). Respondents
