Effect of paediatric lung ultrasound on antibiotic prescriptions in hospitalised children and adolescents with lower respiratory tract infections: protocol for a randomised, sham-controlled trial (PLUS-AP trial).

INTRODUCTION: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) remain a major global health problem and a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Inappropriate antibiotic use for predominantly viral LRTIs is common and contributes substantially to the public health threat of antimicrobial resistance. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a radiation-free, bedside imaging tool with high diagnostic accuracy for paediatric pneumonia. We hypothesise that integrating LUS into the care of children hospitalised with LRTIs can improve antibiotic decision-making and safely reduce unnecessary antibio

Assessing Fluoride Concentrations in Iowa's Groundwater and Drinking Water: Implications for Public Health and Water Management.

This study investigates the occurrence and distribution of fluoride in Iowa's groundwater and drinking water. Fluoride, added to community water supplies to prevent dental caries, can pose health risks at high concentrations. The U.S. Public Health Service recommends an optimal fluoride concentration of 0.7 mg/L, while the EPA sets a maximum contaminant level (MCL) at 4 mg/L and a secondary MCL at 2 mg/L. This research analyzes fluoride data from various sources, including the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the US Geological Survey, covering 9,011 raw groundwater samples from 1931 an

Recent and forecasted increases in coccidioidomycosis incidence in California linked to hydroclimatic swings.

Coccidioidomycosis, or Valley fever, is an infectious disease caused by inhalation of Coccidioides spp., fungi found primarily in soils of the southwestern United States. Prior work showed that coccidioidomycosis cases in California sharply increase by nearly 2-fold following wet winters that occur one- and two-years following drought. Statewide drought between 2020-2022 followed by heavy precipitation during the 2022-2023 winter raised concerns over potential increases in coccidioidomycosis cases in the fall of 2023, prompting California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to issue public heal

Prostitution in Lagos: a sociomedical study.

A study of 150 hotel prostitutes in Lagos was undertaken to determine their socioeconomic identity and, through an assessment of their health knowledge, attitude, and practice, their probable impact on public health. The subjects were selected from 15 hotels, representing 20% of the estimated hotel universe in Lagos and different socioeconomic strata. Information was obtained from the subjects with the help of the hotel staff, who arranged pre-interview conferences with them. Prostitution in Lagos is not organised and there are no figures on the prostitute population. Ninety-eight per cent of

A chitosan-based fluorescent probe for biosensing and food sensing of hydrazine and hydrogel applications.

Hydrazine (N2H4) is a highly toxic industrial chemical that threatens food safety and public health via food chain accumulation. To address the scarcity of reliable detection tools for N2H4 in food and biological matrices, a chitosan (CTS)-based fluorescent probe (CTS-NI) was fabricated by covalently conjugating a naphthalimide fluorophore to modified CTS. The probe exhibits significant fluorescence enhancement at 558 nm toward N2H4, with a large Stokes shift (118 nm) and a low detection limit (2.03 × 10-7 M). Its biocompatibility and CTS-derived structural advantages enable sensitive and quan

Dysregulated gut hormone responses to nutrient ingestion in older adults with low appetite: a mechanism of anorexia of ageing?

Anorexia of ageing - the age-related reduction in appetite and food intake - is a public health concern for an ageing global population. However, current understanding of the aetiology of the condition is limited. In this review, evidence of gut hormone responses to feeding in older adults is reviewed, and it is proposed that a dysregulation of this process is a mechanism driving low appetite in later life. The evidence is synthesised to critically present this case, spotlighting recent data demonstrating a highly anorexigenic gut hormone profile in older adults exhibiting low appetite, which

Nanotechnology to Break the Antimicrobial Resistance.

The global rise in antibiotic resistance has become a major public health concern, driving an urgent demand for new therapeutic strategies to manage infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. Nanomaterials have therefore attracted significant interest as potential alternatives or adjuvants to conventional antibiotics, owing to their tunable physicochemical properties and their ability to act through mechanisms distinct from those of classical drugs. In this review, we focus on surface-modified nanomaterials and metal-organic cages and examine how parameters such as size, charge,

Addressing the consequences of missing vaccines: A case report of pertussis in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Pertussis, caused primarily by Bordetella pertussis and occasionally by Bordetella parapertussis, remains a major public health issue despite widespread vaccination efforts. Immunocompromised children, such as those with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, are particularly susceptible to vaccine-preventable diseases, underscoring the importance of ensuring adequate vaccination coverage. We report a case of a 3-year-old boy with ALL who developed a Bordetella parapertussis infection during chemotherapy. The child's lack of documented pertussis vaccination underscores critical gaps in primary healthca
