We describe a patient with radiation-induced meningioma 12 years after cranial irradiation for ectopic germinoma. PET scans with fludeoxyglucose F 18 showed a high glucose metabolic rate in the meningioma despite a benign histologic appearance.

A 55-year-old woman presented with profound congestive heart failure 23 years following mediastinal radiation. Ejection fraction (EF) was 35%. Symptoms markedly improved and EF increased to > 55% following saphenous vein bypass for > or = 80% ostial left main stenosis. Radiation therapy, a known risk factor for coronary atherosclerosis, may present with reversible severe silent ischemia.

We analyzed trends in the disease rate of skin cancers in the 1976-80 and 1986-90 intervals in the 27 university hospitals in Japan. We also measured doses of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation at Sapporo, Kobe and Miyazaki to evaluate the relationship between the two in Japan. We have observed significant differences in the response to ionizing radiation of two closely related human cells lines, and now compare the effects on these lines of both low and intermediate LET radiation. Compared to TK6, WTK1 has an enhanced X-ray survival, and is also more resistant to cell killing by alpha-particles. Some previous studies, using sunlamps emitting nonsolar-spectrum UV or excessive UV doses, have questioned the ability of sunscreens to prevent UV-induced immune suppression. Haemorrhagic radiation proctitis (HRP) is infrequently seen amongst the patients who are either undergoing or have undergone radiotherapy to the pelvis. We treated 16 documented cases of HRP, who did not respond to conventional steroid retention enemas, with 4% formalin application. It was observed that the rectal bleeding was controlled completely in 81% cases in median follow up of 11 months (range 6-17 months) and diversion colostomy could be avoided in all the cases. The effectiveness of local formalin application in severe HRP is described in this article.

The cutaneous RAM flap was used successfully to repair a radiation-induced vesicovaginal fistula. Patient selection is important, ideally one with a fatty lower abdominal wall and without a previous incision transecting the inferior rectus muscle below the umbilicus. The RAM flap has excellent vascularity, allows augmentation of the bladder, and permits an extraperitoneal approach, factors that are important when operating in an irradiated field.

Peripheral nerve appears to be a dose-limiting normal tissue in the clinical application of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). To assess IORT injury to peripheral nerve, three groups of five beagle dogs received doses of 12, 20 or 28 Gy to the surgically exposed and isolated right sciatic nerve in the mid-femoral region using 6 MeV electrons.
