Inbred Lewis (LEW/N) female rats develop an arthritis in response to group A streptococcal cell wall peptidoglycan polysaccharide (SCW), which mimics human rheumatoid arthritis. The BioBreeding/Worcester (BB/Wor) rat provides a good model of spontaneous autoimmune diabetes. There are several sublines of the BB/Wor rat. Trichloroethylene (TCE) (CAS No. 79-01-6) is an industrial solvent used in degreasing, dry cleaning, and numerous other medical and industrial processes. Inflammation of the rat jejunum with Trichinella spiralis causes altered smooth muscle contractility by day 6 postinfection (PI). We investigated the association of structural change in the smooth muscle layers with inflammation. The H-2-compatible mouse strains, AKR and B10.BR, exhibit disparate responses to infection with the parasitic nematode Trichinella spiralis. The resistant AKR mice expel intestinal adult worms faster than susceptible B10.BR mice. We tested antibody and lymphokine responses in these strains. The production of antibodies against the schistosomulum surface antigens of Schistosoma mansoni in response to immunization with highly irradiated cercariae was followed. We have previously shown that immunization with RPE65 produces in rats of four strains a severe inflammatory eye disease, designated experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU). Here, we examined the uveitogenicity of RPE65 in six strains of mice.
