[Bovine spongiform encephalopathy and natural scrapie].

Scrapie in sheep and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in cattle are neurodegenerative diseases. They belong to the group of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (prion diseases). Scrapie is a worldwide enzootic disease, first described two centuries ago. It is due to more than 20 different strains of agent and strongly influenced by genetic factors of the host. There is no evidence of a link between this disease and human transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is a consequence of oral infection of cattle by meat and bone meal produced in the United Kin

[Epidemiology of rinderpest and cattle plague in Mali: serological surveys].

Within the epidemiological surveillance of rinderpest in Mali a serological survey has been carried out on 58 herds of small ruminants. Out of 567 tested sera for the detection of antibodies against rinderpest 2 were positive. These sera were collected from two animals over 6 years old, probably infected during the last outbreak of rinderpest in Mali in 1986. Therefore, it can be assumed that the rinderpest virus has not circulated in Mali since that year. However, the infection rate among goats and sheep due to the PPR virus seemed to be high: 74% of herds had already been infected. The preva

Dyserythropoiesis in animal trypanosomosis.

Haemolysis is the most prominent pathogenic cause of the anaemia in trypanosomosis. Haemolytic anaemias are normally accompanied by increased erythropoiesis, reticulocyte response and increase in the mean corpuscular volume of circulating erythrocytes. In trypanosomosis, the anaemia is accompanied by inadequate erythropoiesis. This is suggested by suboptimal reticulocyte response in infected rodents, little or no reticulocyte response in infected ruminants and weak erythrogenic capacity of infected sheep plasma in mice. The mean corpuscular volume increases in the acute phase reaching a peak a

The host preferences of Chrysops silacea and C. dimidiata (Diptera: Tabanidae) in an endemic area of Loa loa in the Congo.

The analysis of 404 blood meals from Chrysops silacea and C. dimidiata which had been collected in the forests of the Chaillu mountains (People's Republic of the Congo) has demonstrated for the first time that both species also feed on non-human hosts. For both species the feeding patterns are fairly similar. However, man remains the main host in 89-90% of the cases. C. silacea and C. dimidiata took 6 and 4% respectively of their blood meals from hippopotamuses, 2 and 0% from rodents, 2 and 4% from wild ruminants, and 0.8 and 0.7% from monitor lizards. Whenever a differentiation has been made

Experimental Chrozophora plicata poisoning in goats and sheep.

The clinical, biochemical and pathological effects of the fresh shoots of Chrozophora plicata on Nubian goats and Desert sheep were investigated. The animals were given single or repeated daily doses of 10, 5, 1 and 0.5 g/kg of chrozophora shoots by stomach tube and died at various times post dosing. The main signs of Chrozophora poisoning in both species of ruminants were salivation, dyspnea, bloat, inappetence, dullness, diarrhea, paresis of the hind limbs, recumbency and lateral deviation of the head and neck. The main lesions were hemorrhage in the lungs, heart and kidneys, pulmonary cyano

Biochemical composition of microfiliarial and adult stages of Setaria cervi.

The microfilariae and adults of Setaria cervi, a filarial parasite of Indian water-buffalo (Bubalus bubalis Linn.) and of other ruminants were analysed for various biochemical constituents. Both stages of the parasite were rich in protein, carbohydrate, and lipids while nucleic acids were detectable in only small amounts. Microfilariae and adults contained 10 and 25% dry matter, 57.4 and 63.0% protein, 8.9 and 14.8% carbohydrate, and 12.8 and 9.2% lipid, respectively. Reducing sugars accounted for 52 and 67% respectively of the total carbohydrate in these two stages. Glycogen accounted for 95%

Differentiation of coital behavior in mammals: a comparative analysis.

The evidence reviewed suggests that in all mammalian species the adult male's ability to display masculine coital behavior depends in part on exposure of the developing brain to testicular testosterone or its metabolites. In many mammals, particularly rodents, ruminants, and some carnivores, perinatal exposure to androgen also causes behavioral defeminization, i.e., reduced capacity to display typically feminine coital behavior in response to gonadal hormones in adulthood. The data reviewed suggest that no such process occurs in certain other mammalian species, including ferret, rhesus monkey,

Physical effectiveness of corn silage fractions stratified with the Penn State Particle Separator for lactating dairy cows.

This study evaluated the physical effectiveness of whole-plant corn silage (CS) particles stratified with the Penn State Particle Separator, composed of 19- and 8-mm-diameter sieves and a pan, for lactating dairy cows. Eight Holstein cows (27.6 ± 2.8 kg/d of milk, 611 ± 74 kg body weight; 152 ± 83 d in milk) were assigned to two 4 × 4 Latin squares (22-d periods, 16-d adaptation), where one square was formed with rumen-cannulated cows. Three CS particle fractions were manually isolated using the 8- and 19-mm diameter sieves and re-ensiled in 200-L drums. The 4 experimental diets were (% dry ma

[Disseminated histoplasmosis in a dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas neglecta) kept in captivity conditions in Spain].

A 17 month old female gazelle dorca (Gazella dorcas neglecta), kept in captivity in a Spanish zoo, showed several symptoms of illness including fever, lethargy and behavioural changes. (X)-ray revealed ruminal "foreign bodies" and pneumonia with a nodular pattern. After surgical intervention, the animal died. At necropsy, histopathologic and microbiological findings were consistent with the diagnosis of disseminated histoplasmosis, with an inflammatory histological pattern associated with immunodepression in the animal, similar to those observed in patients with severe immunodeficiency (AIDS a

Using an associational trends framework to understand the meaning of obsessive reminiscence.

When the psychodynamics of simple reminiscence, the kind of reminiscence used to manage anxiety, are disrupted, individuals can become stuck on certain memories and begin to obsess or ruminate about them. Generally, obsessive reminiscence is identified as nonpurposive and dysfunctional. However, interpreting the content of obsessive reminiscence within an associational trends framework demonstrates that useful diagnostic information can be gleaned from obsessive reminiscence. This information can be incorporated into the treatment plan to enhance the quality of care delivered to clients, as we

Haemorrhagic bowel syndrome in dairy cattle: possible role of Clostridium perfringens type A in the disease complex.

A survey based on clinical, pathological and microbiological investigations was performed on 11 Brown Swiss cattle affected with depression, anorexia, agalaxia, ruminal hypomotility, abdominal pain and melaena. In eight animals, macroscopical lesions consisted in haemorrhagic enteritis in the small intestine. Seven of eight isolates from tissue samples were identified as Clostridum perfringens type A, and four were identified as C. perfringens type A with the beta2 toxin gene. Based on these observations, animals were considered affected with haemorrhagic bowel syndrome.

Breaking the cycle: how physical activity disrupts repetitive negative thinking in adolescents through positive affect and cognitive flexibility.

Repetitive negative thinking is a transdiagnostic cognitive process that is particularly prevalent during adolescence, a developmental period characterized by rapid changes in emotional regulation and executive control. Repetitive negative thinking is closely associated with a range of internalizing problems and represents an important risk factor for adolescent depression and anxiety. Given that academic pressure and self-focused attention increase markedly during the high school stage (ages 15–17), repetitive negative thinking is more likely to be activated and maintained during this period;

Mood instability in patients with unipolar depression measured using smartphones and the association with measures of wellbeing, recovery and functioning.

OBJECTIVE: While mood instability is strongly linked to depression, its ramifications remain unexplored. In patients diagnosed with unipolar depression (UD), our objective was to investigate the association between mood instability, calculated based on daily smartphone-based patient-reported data on mood, and functioning, quality of life, perceived stress, empowerment, rumination, recovery, worrying and wellbeing. METHODS: Patients with UD completed daily smartphone-based self-assessments of mood for 6 months, making it possible to calculate mood instability using the Root Mean Squared Succes

Enteropathy and bone marrow hypoplasia associated with presumptive albendazole toxicosis in a juvenile Boer goat.

Albendazole is a widely used anthelmintic drug that is labeled for the treatment of specific nematodes and flukes in ruminants. Albendazole is approved for the treatment of liver flukes in goats (10 mg/kg PO for a single dose), but is commonly used extra-label in situations in which parasite resistance is an issue. Albendazole toxicosis has been reported in pigeons, doves, alpacas, humans, dogs, and cats. Here we report an adverse event in a 6-mo-old goat associated with extra-label use of albendazole (35.7 mg/kg PO daily for 3 d). Clinicopathologic findings included severe diarrhea and death,

Rift Valley Fever Virus Non-Structural Protein S Is Associated with Nuclear Translocation of Active Caspase-3 and Inclusion Body Formation.

Rift Valley fever phlebovirus (RVFV) causes Rift Valley fever (RVF), an emerging zoonotic disease that causes abortion storms and high mortality rates in young ruminants as well as severe or even lethal complications in a subset of human patients. This study investigates the pathomechanism of intranuclear inclusion body formation in severe RVF in a mouse model. Liver samples from immunocompetent mice infected with virulent RVFV 35/74, and immunodeficient knockout mice that lack interferon type I receptor expression and were infected with attenuated RVFV MP12 were compared to livers from uninfe

Serologic evidence of Echinococcus granulosus in slaughterhouses in Pakistan: global alarm for butchers in developing countries.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a neglected zoonosis that affects humans and livestock. This sero-survey was designed for the first time in Pakistan to assess the exposure of butchers to E. granulosus as there was no previous report in the country for this occupational group. METHODOLOGY: Blood samples were collected from registered butchers (n = 364) in five different slaughterhouses in Faisalabad and Bahawalnagar Districts. Sera were tested for anti-Echinococcus granulosus IgG with a commercially available ELISA kit (specificity, 100%; sensitivity,

Captivated by thought: "Sticky" thinking leaves traces of perceptual decoupling in task-evoked pupil size.

Throughout the day, we may sometimes catch ourselves in patterns of thought that we experience as rigid and difficult to disengage from. Such "sticky" thinking can be highly disruptive to ongoing tasks, and when it turns into rumination constitutes a vulnerability for mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. The main goal of the present study was to explore the stickiness dimension of thought, by investigating how stickiness is reflected in task performance and pupil size. To measure spontaneous thought processes, we asked participants to perform a sustained attention to response task

Brooding, Inattention, and Impulsivity as Predictors of Adolescent Suicidal Ideation.

Although suicide remains a leading cause of death for adolescents, risk factors beyond diagnoses and suicide attempt history remain unclear. We examined whether cognitive style and temperament impact risk for an early, yet still clinically relevant and distressing, form of suicidality: active suicidal ideation. We used binary logistic regression to test whether brooding, inattention, and impulsivity predicted significantly increased risk for suicidal ideation in a sample of 134 twins, 46 of whom endorsed active suicidal ideation (i.e., probands), as well as probands' cotwins and matched contro
