When do social inequalities in C-reactive protein start? A life course perspective from conception to adulthood in the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear when in the life course do social inequalities in inflammation emerge. We examined whether the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) is determined at conception, in childhood, adolescence or adulthood in 1484 participants from the population-based Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study. METHODS: Five variants of the CRP gene were used to investigate whether SEP differences in CRP levels are determined at conception. SEP and serum CRP were assessed in childhood (age 3-9), adolescence (age 12-18) and in adulthood (age 24-39). S

[The orthopaedic status of a selected severe haemophilia group].

The aim of the present study was to describe the orthopaedic status of patients with severe haemophilia, and to relate this status to the type of replacement therapy received by patients prior to the study. Ninety two haemophiliacs with median age 26 were included. Six joints--knees, elbows and ankles were evaluated clinically using the Gilbert scale. The evaluation included physical status (0-12 points/joint) and pain score (0-3 points/joint). X-ray examinations were evaluated according to the Pettersson scale (0-13 points/joint). On all scales, normality was represented by 0 score. Knees wer

Dimensions of care for dementia sufferers in long-term care institutions: are they related to outcomes?

OBJECTIVES: This study empirically examined whether dimensions of care cluster in special care units (SCUs) compared with non-SCUs. The relationship between SCU status plus separate measures of the dimensions of care and outcomes for dementia sufferers was then investigated. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Intermediate Care Facility Project. The sample (N = 510) included residents with dementia, aged 65 and older, in intermediate care facilities throughout the province of British Columbia. Canada. Longitudinal data included 6 outcomes: cognitive function, behavioral problems of agitation an

The medical evaluation of the elderly preoperative patient.

Improvements in anesthesia and surgical techniques have greatly reduced the perioperative mortality and morbidity of elderly patients. Mortality is more closely correlated with pathology, type of surgery, and duration of anesthesia rather than with age. Particular attention should be directed toward cardiac and pulmonary status, because operative mortality and morbidity is related, for the most part, to cardiovascular and pulmonary complications. Postoperatively, the occurrence of pulmonary emboli and painless myocardial infarctions is more common in this age group. Elderly patients are more o

Quantification of Neighborhood-Level Social Determinants of Health in the Continental United States.

IMPORTANCE: An association between social and neighborhood characteristics and health outcomes has been reported but remains poorly understood owing to complex multidimensional factors that vary across geographic space. OBJECTIVES: To quantify social determinants of health (SDOH) as multiple dimensions across the continental United States (the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia) at a small-area resolution and to examine the association of SDOH with premature mortality within Chicago, Illinois. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, census tracts from

National burden of disabilities in Bangladesh and its socio-demographic correlates: A 2021 cross-sectional analysis.

Disability remains an important public health and social challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Bangladesh. However, nationally representative evidence on its burden, distribution, and associated factors remains limited. This study estimated the national prevalence and patterns of disability in Bangladesh and examined their sociodemographic correlates. This cross-sectional study analysed data from 155,025 participants in the 2021 National Survey on Persons with Disabilities (NSPD). Disability status (yes or no) was the primary outcome. Explanatory variab

Socioeconomic Factors and Their Role in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease: A Comprehensive Review.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a major public health concern, is influenced by an interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, with socioeconomic factors functioning as important upstream determinants whose roles remain not yet fully understood. This review synthesizes current evidence on how different indicators of socioeconomic status as well as related social determinants of health-income, poverty, food insecurity, health insurance, education, migration, and composite indices-relate to MASLD prevalence, severity, and outcomes across differen

Neighbourhood environments and later life flourishing: A systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Enabling older people to live comfortably in their own neighbourhoods for longer, known as ageing-in-place, has become a policy priority to reduce pressures on health and social care systems amid global population ageing. However, research on place and health remains predominantly deficit-focused, emphasising illness and decline (e.g. frailty, depression, and anxiety). This review adopts a positive psychology perspective and a life-course framework to synthesise evidence on how neighbourhood environments support flourishing in later life, a multidimensional state encompassing happi

The association between social risk profile and self-reported severe headache or migraine with all-cause mortality risk: A machine learning-based prediction model and interpretability analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Social risk factors are key determinants of migraine occurrence and progression. This study assessed the association between the social risk profile (SRP) and the prevalence of self-reported severe headache or migraine and all-cause mortality in US adults, and developed machine learning prediction models to explore feature contributions to internal risk stratification. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004, weighted multivariate logistic regression evaluated the SRP-migraine association, and a weighted Cox proportional haza

Mapping the network structure of dementia and its associated factors among older adults in Singapore: evidence from two national cross-sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Dementia arises from the interplay of multiple sociodemographic, behavioural, physical, and psychosocial factors that often coexist and interact in later life. Traditional epidemiological studies have typically examined these factors in isolation, overlooking their complex interrelations. Network analysis provides an integrative framework to visualise and quantify these interconnections, offering insights into how dementia and its associated factors coexist within a broader system. METHODS: Data were drawn from two nationally representative cross-sectional surveys of older adults

Environmental and Neighborhood Determinants of Psoriasis: A Systematic Review of Pollution, Built Environment, and Socioeconomic Vulnerability on Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease with well-studied genetic and immunologic drivers. Substantial unexplained variability remains, however, in disease onset, severity, and treatment response. There is evidence that implicates the role of environmental and social determinants in these observed differences in psoriasis. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize the current evidence examining the relationship between external exposures, including air and chemical pollution, the built environment, and neighborhood characteristics, and their impact on psoriasis incidence, sev

Financial Toxicity and Treatment Satisfaction Among Lebanese Patients With Cancer: Indirect Associations Involving Psychological Distress.

PURPOSE: Lebanon's ongoing economic collapse has severely disrupted access to cancer care and increased out-of-pocket financial burden for patients. Financial toxicity and psychological distress are recognized barriers to treatment experience and adherence, yet little is known about how these factors interact within collapsing health systems. This study assessed whether psychological distress is indirectly associated between financial toxicity and treatment satisfaction among Lebanese adults with cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 308 adult patients with cancer rece

Beyond 'Walk Walk Walk': Barriers and facilitators of physical activity in individuals with claudication.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with claudication have significantly reduced capacity for walking, which leads to worsening prognosis and decline in overall health status. Basic walking advice is usually provided to individuals with claudication during their routine clinic visits, which has very limited efficacy, resulting in little or no change in physical activity behaviour. OBJECTIVE: This study explored barriers and facilitators to physical activity (PA) in individuals with claudication, using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) and the Socioecological Model (SEM) for behavioural diagnosis. Social risk factors in patients with cystic fibrosis: impacts on exacerbations, lung function, and BMI.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) outcomes are influenced by a myriad of genetic, microbiological, and environmental factors, as well as socioeconomic constraints. Studies have shown that low socioeconomic status is associated with a higher risk of death, lower body weight and height, worsened pulmonary function, and increased pulmonary exacerbation in children with CF. Screening for social risk factors (SRFs) is one possible approach to help mitigate unmet social needs in people with CF (PwCF). OBJECTIVES: Does a positive screening response for SRF correlate with health outcomes in PwCF? DES
