Social network, perceived satisfaction with neighborhoods and depressive symptoms among older adults in Korea.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly affected social networks and perceived satisfaction with neighborhoods, potentially affecting the mental health of older adults. This study investigated the changes in these factors and their association with depressive symptoms among Korean older adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of depressive symptoms slightly increased during the pandemic (4.7-4.9%). Social networks weakened, whereas perceived neighborhood satisfaction improved. Notably, the protective effect of social networks against depressive

Amylin-Calcitonin receptor signaling in the medial preoptic area mediates affiliative social behaviors in female mice.

Social animals actively engage in contact with conspecifics and experience stress upon isolation. However, the neural mechanisms coordinating the sensing and seeking of social contacts are unclear. Here we report that amylin-calcitonin receptor (Calcr) signaling in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) mediates affiliative social contacts among adult female mice. Isolation of females from free social interactions first induces active contact-seeking, then depressive-like behavior, concurrent with a loss of Amylin mRNA expression in the MPOA. Reunion with peers induces physical contacts, activates bo

Non-specific encoding of threat in social phobia and panic disorder.

This study employs a release of proactive interference technique to explore encoding-related processes in social phobia. Twenty-six individuals with social phobia and 24 individuals with panic disorder participated in the memory task. Significant release of proactive interference was found when neutral and threat dimensions were encoded, but not when social and physical threat dimensions, or when positive and threat dimensions were presented. Threat was therefore differently encoded depending on the active encoding context in which semantic processing occurred. Individuals with social phobia o

Improving parental emotion socialization in military families: Results of a randomized controlled trial.

Prior research indicates that children of deployed parents are at risk for emotional problems, suggesting the utility of preventive efforts for military families. Effective parental socialization of children's emotions is protective for children's development, and parental experiential avoidance may impede parental emotion socialization, yet intervention studies in this area are lacking. This study examined the impact of a parenting program, After Deployment Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT), on parental emotion socialization postintervention (6 months postbaseline) and whether intervention eff

At-a-glance - Living arrangements and health status of seniors in the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey.

Currently, 1 in 3 Canadian seniors meet the criteria for successful aging, which include low probability of disease and disability, high cognitive and physical ability and active engagement in life. The sociodemographic characteristic of living alone can identify high-risk seniors, due to its association with lower social support and interactions, thus increasing susceptibility to negative health outcomes in older age. However, limited data exists on the living arrangements of Canadian seniors. In this analysis, we present sociodemographic characteristics and measures of health and social well

An illustration of collaborative care with a focus on the role of fathers in Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA).

The aim of this case study is to illustrate the importance of collaborative care as part of Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA). Mothers are often at the foreground of providing support within the family. However, fathers have the potential to play a profound role. In this paper, we describe a patient with anorexia nervosa treated with the MANTRA. The formulation of this case included autistic spectrum traits in both the father and daughter leading to social isolation. We describe how the family members were engaged into treatment and how paternal support was used to promot

Attitudes of mothers towards their child with Down syndrome before and after the introduction of prenatal diagnosis.

In 1970, before the introduction of prenatal diagnosis of chromosome anomalies, an unpublished questionnaire study concerning the social and emotional situation of mothers of children with Down syndrome was conducted in southern Germany. To assess the psychosocial impact of the availability of prenatal diagnosis on parents of genetically handicapped children, we re-evaluated and repeated the 1970 study over 30 years later. Although mothers' feelings of guilt for having a child with disabilities remained on a low level, today's mothers have a stronger feeling of being involuntarily segregated i

Recurrent syndromal depression in caregivers.

The authors investigated recurrent syndromal depression in 103 caregivers using a structured clinical interview. Participants who cared for a family member with a progressive dementia were assessed annually for 3 years and divided into 3 groups: never depressed (47%), episodically depressed (33%), and chronically depressed (20%). Compared with the other 2 groups, the chronically depressed caregivers reported greater levels of stress, upsetting social support, depressive symptomatology, along with higher frequencies of negative life events and more negative reactions to disruptive patient behav

The role of facebook support groups for women with benign urologic conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the availability and content of patient support groups on social media platforms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five prevalent benign, urologic conditions affecting adult women were selected for analysis. Facebook support groups for these conditions were identified. Groups specific to one urologic condition and with at least 400 members were included, and groups for pediatric and malignant conditions were excluded. Each support group was analyzed for member count, posts per month, and period of activity. The 100 most recent posts in the largest support groups were manually r

The role of social isolation in frequent and/or avoidable hospitalisation: rural community-based service providers' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Research on frequent or avoidable hospital admission has not focussed on the perspectives of service providers or rural settings. The link between social isolation and admission is not well explored, although social isolation is known to have negative health effects. OBJECTIVE: This paper reports further analysis from a study investigating service providers' perspectives on factors influencing frequent hospital admission in older patients with chronic disease, and explores the perceived role of social isolation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 15 purposively sampled comm

Negative schizotypy attenuates the effect of momentary stress on social dysfunction related to COVID-19 social distancing.

Schizotypy is associated with a broad range of motivational and social dysfunctions. However, there is reason to suspect that negative schizotypy may limit social dysfunction in specific contexts that typically increase isolation and loneliness. We analyzed whether positive, negative and disorganized facets of schizotypy would mitigate detrimental reactions to stress in the context of a global stressor (the COVID-19 pandemic) that has widely necessitated social and physical isolation. Responses to two measures of schizotypy were compared to ecological momentary assessments of social dysfunctio
