Craniocervical dystonia questionnaire (CDQ-24): development and validation of a disease-specific quality of life instrument.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a questionnaire for measuring quality of life in patients with craniocervical dystonia. METHODS: A 29-item pool was developed based on semi-structured interviews of patients with cervical dystonia (CD) and blepharospasm (BSP). This preliminary questionnaire was administered to 203 consecutive patients with CD and BSP from Austrian dystonia and botulinum toxin outpatient clinics. For scale generation, a combination of exploratory factor and cluster analysis was applied. This resulted in the 24-item version of the instrument (CDQ-24) based on five subscales: Stigm

Correlates of negative attitudes toward gay men: sexism, male role norms, and male sexuality.

Research has shown that heterosexual men are more negative toward gay men than women are on measures of attitudes toward homosexual behaviour and homosexual persons (Kite & Whitley, 1996). Gender differences in attitudes toward gay men's civil rights are less clear. No empirical studies, however, have investigated these findings with a scale that measures specifically these three attitudinal subcomponents. This study was a preliminary test of a scale that measured these subcomponents. In addition, this study investigated the relationship between these subcomponents and other attitudinal measur

The effect of acamprosate on the development of morphine-induced behavioral sensitization in rats.

Recently we have shown that the alcohol anti-craving drug acamprosate (calcium acetylhomotaurinate), a functional N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist which is used therapeutically to prevent relapse in weaned alcoholics, was also effective in suppressing (1) conditioned place aversion induced by morphine withdrawal, and (2) expression of morphine-induced behavioral sensitization. Here, we addressed the question of whether the development of behavioral sensitization, induced by daily injections of morphine (10 mg/kg) over a period of 10 days, could also be suppressed by repeated pre

Ambivalent sexism and attitudes toward women who engage in premarital sex in Turkey.

This study examined the relationship of ambivalent sexism, political conservatism, demographic variables (age, education, and gender), and prior sexual experience to Turkish men s and women s attitudes toward women who engage in premarital sex. Participants included 124 Turkish undergraduate students and 60 nonstudent Turkish adults. Benevolent but not hostile sexism uniquely predicted more negative views of women who engage in premarital sex once other variables were controlled. Regression analyses demonstrated that for both men and women, older, more politically conservative and less sexuall

Interleukin 1alpha alters hippocampal serotonin and norepinephrine release during open-field behavior in Sprague-Dawley animals: differences from the Fawn-Hooded animal model of depression.

Detection of two biogenic amine neurotransmitters, serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) within the CA1 region of the hippocampus (HPC) of behaving male laboratory animals (Rattus norvegicus), was performed with miniature carbon sensors (BRODERICK PROBES) and in vivo semidifferential microvoltammetry after acute administration of the soluble immune factor, human recombinant, interleukin (IL) 1alpha (10 and 100 ng/kg i.p.). Two animal models were compared, i.e., (a) the Sprague-Dawley (SD) model, a strain neither biochemically nor immune-challenged and (b) the Fawn-Hooded (FH) model, a bioch

The role of striatal dopaminergic mechanisms in rotational behavior induced by phencyclidine and phencyclidine-like drugs.

Phencyclidine (PCP) and phencyclidine-like drugs (TCP, dexoxadrol, MK-801, and SKF 10,047) were evaluated for their ability to induce rotational behavior in rats with unilateral 6-OHDA lesions of the medial forebrain bundle and for their ability to alter striatal dopamine (DA) overflow with microdialysis procedures. All of the compounds tested produced rotational behavior ipsilateral to the lesion, suggesting that they were enhancing extracellular dopamine in the intact striatum. The microdialysis studies, however, did not support this contention. There appeared to be a complete dissociation b

Sexual dimorphisms in the brainstem of the green anole lizard.

Male green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) court females by extending a bright red throat fan, called a dewlap. The dewlap is larger in males than in females who do not display the structure in the context of courtship. The ceratohyoid muscle and second ceratobranchial cartilage which control dewlap extension are significantly larger in male than in female anoles. Neurons innervating the ceratohyoid muscle were retrogradely labeled by injecting the muscle with fast blue and were found to be located in the vagal portion of nucleus ambiguus (Amb X), as well as in the region containing the glossopha

Pharmacological profile of venlafaxine, a new antidepressant, given acutely.

Pharmacological effects of acute treatment with venlafaxine (VEN), a clinically active antidepressant [a noradrenaline (NA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) reuptake inhibitor without any affinity for neurotransmitter receptors] were studied in mice and rats. VEN inhibited the reserpine- or apomorphine-induced hypothermia and enhanced the L-5-HTP-induced head twitches in mice. It reduced the immobility time in Porsolt's test in mice and rats, but either did not change the locomotor activity (mice) or decreased it (rats). VEN reduced the locomotor hyperactivity induced by amphetamine (AMP), apomo

Differential effects of 7-OH-DPAT on amphetamine-induced stereotypy and conditioned place preference.

Low doses of the dopamine D3-preferring agonist 7-hydroxy-N,N-di-n-propyl-2-aminotetralin (7-OH-DPAT) produce a behavioral profile that is opposite to that produced by the psychomotor stimulants cocaine and amphetamine. For example, low doses of 7-OH-DPAT produce conditioned place aversion and hypolocomotion, whereas psychomotor stimulants produce conditioned place preference (CPP) and hyperlocomotion. In experiment 1, the effects of low doses of 7-OH-DPAT (0.01-0.1 mg/kg) on d-amphetamine-induced (1 mg/kg) motor behaviors and CPP were assessed. In experiment 2, the effects of 0.1 mg/kg 7-OH-D

Morphine tolerance and dependence in the rat intestine in vivo.

There has been no previous demonstration of opioid tolerance and dependence with respect to the propulsive and contractile activities of the gut in vivo. In the experiments described herein, morphine was administered continuously (1 mg/kg/hr s.c., 72 hr) and/or by bolus injection (2 mg/kg) and intestinal motility and transit were evaluated in unanesthetized rats. Tolerance in intestinal motility (contractions) and propulsion (transit) was measured in two ways, i.e., by measuring the time required for motility and propulsion to return to control values and by measuring the loss of effectiveness

The differential and temporal effects of antecedent exercise on the self-stimulatory behavior of a child with autism.

The effects of two levels of exercise (walking versus jogging) in suppressing the self-stimulatory behavior of a five-year-old boy with autism were examined. The exercise conditions were applied immediately before periods of academic programming. Maladaptive self-stimulatory behaviors were separately tracked, enabling identification of behaviors that were more susceptible to change (e.g., physical self-stimulation and "out of seat" behavior) versus those that were more resistant (e.g., visual self-stimulation). Examination of temporal effects indicated a decrease in physical self-stimulation a

Roxindole, a potential antidepressant. I. Effect on the dopamine system.

Roxindole (EMD 49980, 5-hydroxy-3-[4-(4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridyl(1))-butyl(1)]-indole mesylate), a selective dopamine autoreceptor agonist and a potential antipsychotic drug, shows a clinical antidepressant efficacy. The present paper examined the neuropharmacological profile of roxindole in rats (male Wistar) and mice (male Albino Swiss) in respect of its influence on dopamine system. Used in low doses, roxindole decreased the locomotor activity, but in higher ones it did not induce a locomotor hyperactivity or stereotypy. It antagonized the amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion, the am

Time course of striatal changes induced by 6-hydroxydopamine lesion of the nigrostriatal pathway, as studied by combined evaluation of rotational behaviour and striatal Fos expression.

Changes taking place after unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesion of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal system have been studied by performing spontaneous, amphetamine-induced and apomorphine-induced rotational behaviour testing and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and Fos protein immunohistochemistry in the same rats. Apomorphine at a low dosage (0.25 mg/kg) induced contraversive rotation and supersensitive striatal Fos expression that were detected 24-48 h post-lesion and gradually increased in magnitude. Twenty-four hours after lesion, both high (5 mg/kg) and low doses (0.5 mg/kg) of D-amphetamine induce

A possible contribution of phenomenology to ethology: application to a behaviour pattern in the mouse.

Classical ethology encourages a causal approach to animal behaviour, using Tinbergen's four questions concerning evolution, function, mechanism and development of behaviour. It sets aside the study of mental processes, which could otherwise help to unify our picture of the relationships between animal and environment. Here the steps in research focused on the psychological meaning of a peculiar behaviour in the mouse--carrying its tail--and what this implies regarding the mouse's cognitive world are given. Initial empirical observations suggested epistemic choices concerning space and object n

Inhibition by MK-801 of morphine-induced conditioned place preference and postsynaptic dopamine receptor supersensitivity in mice.

Intraperitoncel injection of morphine (5 mg/kg) in mice every other day for 8 days produced conditioned place preference (CPP). CPP effects were evaluated by assessing the difference in time spent in the drug-paired compartment and the saline-paired compartment of the place conditioning apparatus. The injection of a noncompetitive NMDA antagonist, MK-801 (0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg. IP), prior to and during morphine treatment in mice inhibited morphine-induced CPP. The development of postsynaptic dopamine (DA) receptor supersensitivity in mice displaying a morphine-induced CPP was evidenced by the enh

Phenotype of striatal cells expressing c-Fos following amphetamine treatment of rats with intrastriatal dopaminergic grafts.

Activation of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system by psychostimulants such as amphetamine increases c-Fos expression in the striatum, mostly in the striatonigral substance P-ergic pathway. This effect is greatly reduced in the neostriatum deprived of dopaminergic afferents. Dopaminergic grafts implanted into the denervated neostriatum restore the reactivity of the striatum to amphetamine. However, the number of striatal neurons expressing c-Fos is greatly increased in the graft-bearing striatum compared with the normal striatum. We examined whether this increase in the number of c-Fos-expres

Behavioral effects of the reversible dopamine antagonist flupenthixol are not potentiated by N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline in the preweanling rat.

In the preweanling rat, the irreversible dopamine (DA) receptor antagonist N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ) does not diminish behaviors induced by the nonselective DA agonist R(-)-propylnorapomorphine (NPA). When given alone, flupenthixol (0.04, 0.1, and 0.4 mg/kg, intraperitoneally [IP]) produced a dose-dependent decrease in the behavioral effects induced by 1.0 mg/kg NPA. Unexpectedly, EEDQ (7.5 mg/kg, IP) did not potentiate flupenthixol's actions. This su
