Sleep duration and its associations with depressive, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, and psychotic-like experiences in young people: a household-based epidemiological study in Hong Kong.

Sleep deficiency is a major global health threat. While some studies have suggested a J-shaped relationship between sleep duration and adverse health outcomes, the influence of excessive sleep is often attributed to confounding factors, such as depression. It remains unclear whether insufficient and excessive sleep would be similarly or differentially associated with a transdiagnostic range of mental health problems in young people. We collected data from 3210 participants (15-25 years) from a household-based epidemiological youth study in Hong Kong. Using univariate and multivariable logistic

Virtual Reality in Psychotherapy: A Commentary on Strategies, Interventions, and Perspectives From Five Clinical Reports.

Virtual reality (VR) applications have shown significant potential in enhancing psychological interventions by evoking vivid emotional reactions and creating immersive environments. This commentary provides an overview of five clinical case reports illustrating the advantages and pitfalls of VR-enhanced psychotherapy in social anxiety disorder, PTSD due to military trauma, auditory hallucinations, depression, and chronic pain. The case reports are analyzed with a dimensional framework designed to evaluate VR applications to be used in psychotherapy. The framework is based on three key dimensio

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Veterans With Combat-Associated Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized, Sham-Controlled Clinical Trial.

Objective: Cumulative data indicate that new protocols of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may induce neuroplasticity and improve clinical symptoms of patients suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of HBOT on veterans with combat-associated PTSD (CA-PTSD) in a randomized, sham-controlled trial. Methods: Male veterans aged 25-60 years with CA-PTSD, with a Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) score above 20, were included. Exclusion criteria included a history of traumatic brain injury, other psychiatric dise

Prevalence of mental disorders in adult populations from the Global South following exposure to natural hazards: a meta-analysis.

AIMS: Although natural hazards (e.g., tropical cyclones, earthquakes) disproportionately affect developing countries, most research on their mental health impact has been conducted in high-income countries. We aimed to summarize prevalences of mental disorders in Global South populations (classified according to the United Nations Human Development Index) affected by natural hazards. METHODS: To identify eligible studies for this meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Web of Science up to February 13, 2024, for observational studies with a cross-sectional or longitudinal design that

Effects of ICU diaries on psychological disorders and sleep quality in critically ill patients and their family members: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The psychological health and sleep quality of intensive care unit (ICU) patients and their families have health implications, and greater attention should be devoted to developing effective interventions to address these concerns. Due to an increasing amount of evidence on ICU diary interventions, their comparative effectiveness should be evaluated. AIMS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of ICU diaries on psychological disorders and sleep quality in critically ill patients and on psychological disorders in their family members. METHODS: The Pu

Scoping review of veterans' disclosure of mental health concerns or medical conditions in the workplace and other settings: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans deal with 'unobservable' medical or mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, at higher rates than the general population. Disclosure of such conditions is important to provide social, emotional, medical and mental health support, but veterans may face challenges when deciding whether to disclose conditions, including fear of stigma or discrimination. Safe disclosure in the workplace is particularly important, as it allows employees to gain accommodations and enables employers to manage workplace health and safety effectively. The objective of thi

A qualitative analysis of the use of intraoperative acupuncture for patients with nosocomephobia.

BACKGROUND: Nosocomephobia, a type of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is a diagnosis of an extreme fear of hospitals that can hinder current/future medical care. There is little research on how nosocomephobia affects elective surgery or how acupuncture can help patients cope. METHODS: Using the transactional model of stress/coping, this qualitative case study examined the role of acupuncture in nosocomephobia patients' elective surgery appraisal processes. Two patients were interviewed about their nosocomephobia and prior hospital experiences. Six reviewers coded interview transcripts l

[Compensation for National Socialist Persecution as a Catalyst for a Paradigm Shift - A Contribution to the History of Psychiatry in the Early Federal Republic of Germany].

OBJECTIVE: After WW II, Holocaust survivors often faced negative assessments by German psychiatrists when claiming compensation for psychological damage, a fact that was met with criticism. This study examines how as a result the prevailing doctrine on trauma sequelae underwent a transformation. METHODS: Academic contributions in German language from 1946 to 1969 are analyzed for their para-digmatic views on the etiology of mental disorders after war and Nazi persecution. RESULTS: Only a new generation of psychiatrists was able to develop more adequate psychotraumatological concepts by using

Subtypes of childhood maltreatment and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in an adult trauma sample: The mechanistic role of sleep.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment is indisputably linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including an increased risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. The role of childhood maltreatment in the context of recovery from a trauma later in adulthood is not well understood. A variable related to both childhood maltreatment and PTSD symptoms, and a potential link between the two, is sleep. The current study aimed to understand how sleep disturbances may play a mechanistic role in the effect of subtypes of childhood maltreatment on PTSD symptom severity in an adult trau

A panel network analysis of posttraumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms across the perinatal period.

The perinatal period is marked by a higher risk of experiencing depressive, anxiety, and/or trauma-related symptoms, a phenomenon that affects millions of individuals each year. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms commonly co-occur but have rarely been examined together beyond prevalence estimates in the perinatal period. Our study aimed to explore patterns of associations among OCD and PTSD symptoms to elucidate within- and between-person effects and how these effects may change over time. Participants (N = 270) were recruited during pregnancy

Improving posttraumatic stress disorder assessment in young children: comparing measures and identifying clinically-relevant symptoms in children ages six and under.

Young children exposed to trauma are vulnerable to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although experts agree on the importance of tailoring PTSD assessments to be developmentally-appropriate for young children, there is little research on which assessment methods best identify clinically significant symptomatology in this difficult-to-assess population. Two competing models for assessing PTSD have been proposed by the DSM-5 and ICD-11. This study compared a DSM-5 measure to an ICD-11 measure in young children (ages 1-6) exposed to a natural disaster. The measures identified simil

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Veterans' spouses: a cross sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has negatively impacted the mental health and well-being of both Canadians and the world as a whole, with Veterans, in particular, showing increased rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Spouses and common-law partners often serve as primary caregivers and sources of support for Veterans, which may have a deleterious effect on mental health and increase risk of burnout. Pandemic related stressors may increase burden and further exacerbate distress; yet the effect of the pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Veterans' spouses is currently unknown. This study exp

Self-stigma predicts post-traumatic and depressive symptoms in traumatized individuals seeking interventions for dissociative symptoms: a preliminary investigation.

Background: Previous studies showed that self-stigma is associated with poor clinical outcomes in people with serious mental illness, and is associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, less is known about self-stigma in people with dissociative symptoms, which are often related to psychological trauma. This study examined whether baseline self-stigma would be associated with dissociative, PTSD and depressive symptoms at post-intervention, after controlling for treatment usage and baseline symptom severity, in a sample of traumatized Chinese adults undertaking a psychoeducat

Mendelian randomization analyses identify bidirectional causal relationships of obesity with psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Obesity have been showed to be strongly associated with psychiatric disorders, but the exact causality and the direction of the relationship remain inconclusive. Thus, we aimed to identify the causal associations between obesity and psychiatric disorders using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with obesity, including body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-hip ratio adjusted for BMI (WHRadjBMI), were extracted from a genome-wide association study of 694,649 European ancestry from the GIANT consortium. Single-Nucleus Transcriptome Profiling of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex: Mechanistic Roles for Neuronal Gene Expression, Including the 17q21.31 Locus, in PTSD Stress Response.

OBJECTIVE: Multidisciplinary studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) implicate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in disease risk and pathophysiology. Postmortem brain studies have relied on bulk-tissue RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), but single-cell RNA-seq is needed to dissect cell-type-specific mechanisms. The authors conducted the first single-nucleus RNA-seq postmortem brain study in PTSD to elucidate disease transcriptomic pathology with cell-type-specific resolution. METHOD: Profiling of 32 DLPFC samples from 11 individuals with PTSD, 10 wi

Treating posttraumatic stress disorder in substance use disorder patients with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness of different types and timings of treatment.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) have high comorbidity. Although prior research indicated that PTSD can effectively be treated with Prolonged Exposure (PE) in these patients, reported effects are small and treatment dropout rates high. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Imagery Rescripting (ImRs) are other promising treatment options for PTSD, that have not yet been examined in this patient group. Furthermore, it is unclear whether PTSD treatment is most effective when offered simultaneous to or after SUD treatment. METHOD

Treating adults with a dual diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder related to childhood abuse: Results from a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: About half of individuals seeking treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) present with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, therapies that have been proven efficacious for simultaneously treating the full spectrum of core symptoms in patients with a dual diagnosis of BPD + PTSD are lacking. METHOD: This is a subgroup analysis from a randomized controlled trial (registration number DRKS00005578) which compared the efficacy of two treatment programs, dialectical behavior therapy for PTSD (DBT-PTSD) versus cognitive processing therapy (CPT). Exposure to Hurricane Sandy and Risk of Opioid Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Given both the increased prevalence of natural disasters in recent years and the crippling opioid epidemic, identifying at-risk groups for substance abuse post-disaster is imperative to survivor mental health. The objective of this study was to examine the association between exposure to Hurricane Sandy and risk of opioid abusive behavior. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from two cross-sectional studies that examined the impact of Hurricane Sandy on mental health from October 2013- August 2016. Patient demographics, hurricane exposure and mental health hi

Risk factors of persistent insomnia among survivors of traumatic injury: a retrospective cohort study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is a diagnosis with broad health and economic implications that has been increasingly recognized in military service members. This trend was concurrent with an increase in traumatic wartime injuries. Accordingly, we sought to determine longitudinal predictors of persistent insomnia in combat veterans who sustained traumatic injuries. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of service members deployed to conflict zones from 2002 to 2016, with longitudinal follow-up in the Veterans Affairs and Military Health Systems. Two cohorts were derived: (1) service members who sust
