The Prevalence of Concurrent Congenital and Developmental Dental Anomalies in Dogs with Class II Malocclusions Compared to Dogs with Normal Occlusion.

Class II malocclusion in dogs is a skeletal abnormality characterized by mandibular distoclusion that can result in traumatic occlusion and compromised oral health. While associated soft tissue trauma is well recognized, the prevalence of concurrent congenital and developmental dental anomalies in affected dogs has not been systematically evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental anomalies in dogs with class II malocclusion and compare findings to dogs with normal occlusion. Medical records from three veterinary dentistry referral centers were retrospectively r

Strengthening Prevention and Treatment of HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Tuberculosis Among Women Who Are Justice System-Involved: CDC Recommendations and Resources.

Women who are currently or formerly incarcerated experience disproportionately high rates of certain infections and diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis (TB). These disparities are shaped by overlapping social and structural conditions such as substance use, trauma, poverty, and limited access to health care. Incarceration can be a critical point of intervention to provide health care access for women who otherwise might not be able to prioritize their own health. However, the effectiveness of these efforts is often limited by varia

Trends in Perioperative Urinary Catheter Utilization by Surgical Procedure Type in the United States, 2010-2017: Evidence From the Nationwide Inpatient Sample.

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheters are frequently used in perioperative care, yet their overuse contributes to iatrogenic complications including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and urethral trauma. In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidelines in 2009 to minimize inappropriate perioperative catheter use. This study evaluates national trends in perioperative indwelling urethral catheter utilization across various surgical specialties from 2010 to 2017 using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database (NIS). METHODS: We conducted a retrospect

A qualitative exploration of the implementation facilitators and challenges of a community health worker program to address health disparities for people recently released from incarceration using the consolidated framework for implementation research.

BACKGROUND: Despite the potential for community health worker (CHW)-led programs to improve the health of people with justice involvement (PWJI), little is known about the practical implementation of such models. We explored barriers and facilitators to implementation of a municipal CHW program, the Health Justice Network (NYC HJN), led by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) in partnership with three reentry-focused community-based organizations (CBOs) and three federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) that was designed to serve the health and social service nee

Multiple symptom illness in New Zealand contemporary veterans.

AIMS: To describe patterns of multiple symptom illness (MSI) in New Zealand military veterans, defined as clusters of "medically unexplained" symptoms not fitting within a specific medical diagnosis, and to investigate the relationship with exposure to traumatic events. METHODS: We designed an online cross-sectional survey. The participants of interest were the 3,874 currently serving veterans who had been deployed to a conflict zone, but all veterans were eligible to participate. A modified Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 54-item symptom checklist identified MSI, the post-traumatic checkli

Assessment of the incremental prognostic value from the modified frailty index-5 in complete traumatic cervical spinal cord injury.

Frailty, as measured by the modified frailty index-5 (mFI-5), and older age are associated with increased mortality in the setting of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, there is limited evidence demonstrating an incremental prognostic value derived from patient mFI-5. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate in-hospital mortality among adult complete cervical SCI patients at participating centers of the Trauma Quality Improvement Program from 2010 to 2018. Logistic regression was used to model in-hospital mortality, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (A

Opioid Prescribing Behaviors Among Surgical Intensive Care Unit Attending Physicians.

BACKGROUND: More than 5 million Americans misuse opioids. Six percent of patients who receive opioids for acute pain progress to chronic use; this increases with higher doses and longer prescriptions. Prescribing variation exists within trauma centers and after emergency surgery but has not been demonstrated among intensivists. METHODS: Milligram morphine equivalents (MME) per patient-ICU-day provided by eleven surgical intensivists were analyzed. The patients were separated into 2 groups based on their percentage of time intubated in the surgical ICU. Both study groups were compared using de…

Risk Factors for Implant Removal After Surgical Fixation of Midshaft Clavicle Fractures.

Midshaft clavicle fractures are common injuries that traditionally have been managed nonoperatively. However, recent literature has shown lower rates of nonunion and improved patient-reported outcomes with surgical management. The rate of implant removal after surgical fixation varies across the literature from 5% to 82%, depending on the method of fixation. We performed a retrospective review of all patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plate-and-screw constructs for midshaft fractures of the clavicle at 2 level I trauma centers to determine the rate of impla…

Ventricular Assist Device Driveline Infections: A Systematic Review.

Infection is the most common complication in patients undergoing ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation. Driveline exit site (DLES) infection is the most frequent VAD infection and is a significant cause of adverse events in VAD patients, contributing to morbidity, even mortality, and repetitive hospital readmissions. There are many risk factors for driveline infection (DLI) including younger age, smaller constitution of patients, obesity, exposed velour at the DLES, longer duration of device support, lower cardiac index, higher heart failure score, DLES trauma, and comorbidities such as
