CONCLUSION: Cataract and glaucoma constituted a public health problem in this rural area of Zaïre.

This paper documents a case of ciliary body hemangioma discovered in the eye of a 72-year-old white man during routine ocular examination. The correct differential diagnosis was not made clinically despite the use of A and B scan ultrasonography and also a fluorescein-angiographic study. The long-term visual outcome and complications related to the use of a semiflexible open-loop all-PMMA anterior chamber intraocular lens were evaluated in 40 eyes in which the capsular support was lost. In this retrospective study a simple modification of implanting an intraocular lens into the anterior chamber during penetrating keratoplasty is presented. In 14 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty after cataract extraction, the intraocular lens was placed back to front in the anterior chamber so that the haptic was angled anteriorly. In a retrospective study, the incidence of secondary glaucoma after congenital cataract extraction was evaluated. Causes of this type of secondary glaucoma include peripheral anterior adhesions which obstruct the anterior chamber angle and prevent normal outflow of aqueous humor, pupillary block, intraocular hemorrhage, and chronic uveitis, among others. Progressive endothelial cell loss and endothelial cell loss induced at the time of surgery occurs in all eyes with rigid anterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs). Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis (FHI) is a frequently overlooked cause of anterior uveitis. Improper diagnosis may lead to unnecessary therapy. Dark brown irides may demonstrate heterochromia poorly. We believe that FHI may be overlooked in blacks because of a frequent lack of obvious heterochromia and the frequent presence of iris nodules. Heterochromia is not necessary for the diagnosis of FHI if other clinical features of the syndrome are present.
