Clinical features and literature review in children and adolescent patients with functioning gonadotroph pituitary neuroendocrine tumors.

PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical characteristics of children and adolescent patients with functioning gonadotroph pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (FGnPTs). METHODS: Two cases of adolescents with FGnPTs were reported. Seven previously reported cases of child or adolescent FGnPTs were also included to summarize the clinical characteristics of this population through a literature review. Furthermore, we compared nine children/adolescent patients with FGnPTs with 11 premenopausal female patients with FGnPTs at our center. RESULTS: The onset age of nine children/adolescent patients with FGnPTs was

Prospective association of screen time with binge-eating disorder among adolescents in the United States: The mediating role of depression.

OBJECTIVE: Screen time has been reported to be associated with binge-eating disorder (BED) among adolescents in the US; however, potential mediators remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate depression symptoms as a mediator of the prospective association between screen time and BED. METHOD: We utilized data from 9465 children (aged 9-11 years at baseline) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (2016-2021). A generalized structural equation model was used to examine the prospective association between average daily screen time at baseline and BED at year 2, adjusting

Associations of physical activity and screen time with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of idiopathic scoliosis, affecting approximately 0.61%-6.15% adolescents worldwide. To date, the results on the relationship between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and AIS were inconsistent, and the association between screen time (ST) and AIS remained unclear. This study aimed to describe MVPA and ST among adolescents, and to explore the independent and joint associations between PA, ST, and AIS. METHODS: A frequency-matched case-control study based on the 2021 Chinese School-based Scoliosis Screening Pr

Utility of evaluating semen samples from adolescents with Klinefelter Syndrome for cryopreservation: A multi-institution evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Klinefelter Syndrome (KS) is the most common genetic condition cause of non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). KS also often results in decreased testicular growth and testosterone production. Because of this, exogenous testosterone therapy is commonly prescribed for KS patients to treat hypogonadism, but this may have additional impacts to future fertility potential. KS adolescent patients may be asked to provide multiple semen samples to identify potential sperm for early cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: To develop a multi-institutional database to evaluate the prevalence of sperm in

Female adolescents living with HIV telling their story through 'my story' book in Malawi: A visual methodology innovation.

INTRODUCTION: Female adolescents living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus are a unique population facing lifelong challenges in reproductive and sexual health ranging from relational, social and legal-ethical considerations. While HIV prevalence of young females is higher than the males (4.9% versus 1%), evidence show that these adolescents in Malawi initiate sex as early as 15 years mostly with adult partners. Yet, young people are frequently reported to be reluctant to discuss sexual matters and demonstrate avoidance of direct questions on sexual issues during interviews. It is critical ther

The efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a family-based economic empowerment intervention (Suubi + Adherence) on suppression of HIV viral loads among adolescents living with HIV: results from a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial in southern Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence from low-resource settings indicates that economic insecurity is a major barrier to HIV treatment adherence. Economic empowerment (EE) interventions have the potential to improve adherence outcomes among adolescents living with HIV (ALWHIV) by mitigating the effects of poverty. This study aims to assess the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a savings-led family-based EE intervention, Suubi + Adherence, aimed at improving antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence outcomes ALWHIV in Uganda. METHODS: Adolescents (mean age 12 years at enrolment; 56% female) receiving ART for

Parent-focused treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa: a study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Family-based treatment is an efficacious outpatient intervention for medically stable adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Previous research suggests family-based treatment may be more effective for some families when parents and adolescents attend separate therapy sessions compared to conjoint sessions. Our service developed a novel separated model of family-based treatment, parent-focused treatment, and is undertaking a randomised controlled trial to compare parent-focused treatment to conjoint family-based treatment. METHODS/DESIGN: This randomised controlled trial will recruit 1

Research into the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of brief, free of charge and anonymous sex counselling to improve (mental) health in youth: design of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The capacity to form romantic relationships and sexual health of adolescents in the Netherlands are compromised by several factors, including young age of first intercourse and adolescent depression. Several thresholds like own expenses, trust and embarrassment prevent adolescents to seek help for their sexual problems. To overcome these thresholds, brief sex counselling has been developed. It has been used since 2006 within the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Public Health Service, but there is lack of information about the (cost-) effectiveness. In the current study we will evaluate the (cost

[Child and adolescent bipolar disorder].

The onset of bipolar disorders before the age of 10 is rare. First manifestation occurs most frequently between the age of 15 to 30. Children of a parent with bipolar disorder are at a fivefold risk for developing a bipolar disorder. Therefore, an elaborate family-history is essential for the assessment of potentially manic or depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. Basically, for all age groups the same diagnostic criteria according to ICD 10 are applied. Due to the differing symptoms for children and adolescents the finding of a diagnosis is considerably harder than for adults. Mani

Bidirectional perspectives on internet-related family communication: Development and validation of the parent-child internet communication scale (PCICS) and associations with problematic internet use.

This study developed and validated the Parent-Child Internet Communication Scale (PCICS), a dyadic measure assessing internet-related communication between parents and adolescents. Drawing on parental mediation theory (Livingstone & Helsper, 2008) and Schaefer's (1965) two-dimensional model of parent-child relationships (acceptance-rejection; psychological autonomy-control), items were generated to capture whether internet-related concerns can be openly shared and constructively discussed within the family. Existing measures have focused mainly on mediation behaviors or general communication q

Association between traditional Chinese medicine constitution and depression in adolescents: A cross-sectional study.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that constitution determines individuals' susceptibility to different health conditions. Previous studies have confirmed the correlation between traditional Chinese medicine constitution (TCMC) and various physical diseases and psychological disorders. However, there is limited research examining the relationship between TCMC and depression in adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 5955 adolescents aged 14 to 24 years from a vocational technical school in China. The participants completed self-report questionnaires. The TCMC questionnaire

The Brain Age Gap as a Predictor of Alcohol Initiation in Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests regional and network-level brain imaging features in late childhood are predictive of alcohol use in adolescence. However, the directionality of these effects (i.e. whether they reflect accelerated or delayed neuromaturation) are mixed. We applied a Brain Age Gap Estimation (BrainAGE) model to examine whether overall deviations from typical brain aging trajectories are predictive of (1) alcohol initiation and (2) use behaviour (experimentation versus binge drinking) in adolescence. METHODS: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study releas

Neural response to reward uncertainty in adolescents with mood and anxiety symptoms.

Adolescence represents a critical neurodevelopmental period of high vulnerability to the onset of psychiatric conditions. Altered processing of uncertain reward outcomes likely contributes to this vulnerability, yet remains poorly understood. Addressing this knowledge gap, we sought to use the fMRI Reward Flanker Task, originally developed by our group, to examine neural responses to uncertain rewards and their clinical associations. To fully capture clinical correlates, we recruited adolescents with mood and anxiety symptoms ranging from low to high severity, including healthy controls (HC).

Parents' perceived supervisor support and work-to-family enrichment affect job and family satisfaction in dual-income parents and their adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Drawing on the Conservation of Resources theory and the work-family enrichment framework, this study posits that resources acquired in the workplace, such as supervisor support, generate benefits that enhance outcomes both within the work domain and across the family domain. While work-to-family enrichment (WtoFE) is a recognized driver of job and family satisfaction, research exploring how these resources cross over to affect the well-being of both partners and their adolescent children remains limited. The research explored both the direct and indirect relationships, as well as

Effect of statins and ACE inhibitors on the metabolome in the Adolescent Type 1 Diabetes cardio-renal Intervention Trial (AdDIT) cohort.

Adolescence represents a pivotal period for the development of early diabetes-related vascular complications, primarily driven by chronic hyperglycemia and associated metabolic disturbances. Metabolomics provides a promising tool to identify biomarkers reflecting these early changes. The present study compared metabolomic profiles between adolescents with and without type 1 diabetes and assessed the impact of glycemia and short-term treatment with statins and/or ACE inhibitors on metabolite trajectories. Metabolomic data were obtained via the Nightingale platform from 341 adolescents with type

Normal spino-pelvic alignment in healthy adolescents: defining the PI-SS relationship and laying the foundations for pre-operative sagittal planning.

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment of adolescent spinal deformities requires accurate pre-operative planning. Few studies confirmed that sagittal alignment restoration is crucial to reduce the risk of early degeneration, yet sagittal alignment targets are lacking in adolescents. No predictive formula for ideal sacral slope (SSideal) based on pelvic incidence (PI) has been developed specifically for surgical planning in adolescents. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between PI and SS in healthy adolescents aged 11-18 years to identify the most accurate model for SSideal p
