PURPOSE: The mechanism of cancer cachexia remains unclear and inflammatory cytokines may play a role in its development. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) are known to be associated with cancer cachexia. BACKGROUND/GOALS: Esophageal varices (EV) in early histological stages of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) have been recognized but not well defined. We sought to determine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and predictors of EV in early-stage PBC, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of recent guidelines regarding EV screening in PBC patients.

We have previously reported presentation serum selenium level to be predictive of outcome in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
