Integration of Simulated Thoracentesis Using Thiel-preserved Cadavers in the Teaching of Thoracic Anatomy for Learning Unit III Medical Students: An Innovative Learning Strategy.

BACKGROUND: Proficiency in performing thoracentesis is a key competency recommended in the Medical Schools Objective Project (MSOP) adopted by the American Association of Medical Colleges, USA, that medical students should possess prior to graduation, although they often do not practice it clinically until the later stages of their training. Thiel-embalmed cadavers, which offer a lifelike experience with less irritation than formalin-preserved cadavers, have been increasingly used as early as 1st year medical school to teach such procedures because of their feel-like and look-like real patient

Evaluation of the endocranial anatomy of the early Paleogene north African gavialoid crocodylian Argochampsa krebsi and evolutionary implications for adaptation to salinity tolerance in marine crocodyliforms.

Argochampsa krebsi is a gavialoid crocodylian from the early Paleogene of North Africa. Based on its recovered phylogenetic relationship with South American species, it has been inferred to have been capable of transoceanic dispersal, but potential anatomical correlates for a marine lifestyle have yet to be identified. Based on CT scans of a mostly complete and well-preserved skull, we reconstruct the endocranial anatomy of Argochampsa and compare it to that of other gavialoids. We demonstrate that Argochampsa possesses concave depressions on the internal surface of the prefrontals and lacrima

Managing Hostile Aortic Anatomies Using an Extended-Length Introducer Sheath During Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Rationale and Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Transfemoral (TF) access is the safest and guideline-recommended approach for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). However, in patients with hostile aortic anatomies, the procedure may carry increased risks of vascular or cerebrovascular complications. The objective of this article is, therefore, to evaluate the safety and efficacy of using the extended-length DrySeal Flex introducer sheath (Gore, USA) for TF-TAVR in high-risk patients with challenging aortic anatomies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-center cohort study including all consecutive patients w

Comparison of real-time instrument use and absorbent tube method for measuring formaldehyde in working environments: A health risk assessment for gross anatomy staff.

Formaldehyde is widely used for the preservation of cadavers, exposing workers to potential risks of formaldehyde exposure in the workplace. This study compared the performance of real-time instruments (Gasmet) and absorbent tube methods in controlling formaldehyde levels in gross anatomy dissections with four working process areas. The concentrations of formaldehyde were determined over working periods ranging from 2 to 5 h. For the Gasmet results, a Monte Carlo simulation was applied in the uncertainty analysis to predict the formaldehyde concentration. Data collection involved questionnaire

Impact of Riolan arch and mesenteric vascular anatomy on tissue oxygenation in rectal cancer surgery: A prospective study on inferior mesenteric artery ligation strategies.

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of the inferior mesenteric artery during rectal cancer surgery, specifically whether to preserve the left colic artery using low-tie ligation or perform high-tie ligation, remains a subject of debate. This study aims to propose a preoperative strategy for left colic artery preservation by evaluating the role of Riolan arch and mesenteric vascular anatomy in modulating tissue oxygen partial pressure during inferior mesenteric artery ligation. METHODS: In a cohort of 109 rectal cancer patients, preoperative computed tomography angiography was used to evaluate

Living and post-mortem CT scans in the gross anatomy lab: A study investigating differences in first-year medical students' exam performance and perceptions.

Basic competency in radiological imaging is essential for physicians to identify and manage diseases. An optimal place in which to include imaging in the medical curriculum is during anatomy as students can correlate the 3D anatomy from their body donors with the 2D cross-sectional anatomy. The goal of this project was to enhance first-year medical students' knowledge of cross-sectional imaging in the gross anatomy lab and to investigate whether there are benefits to learning cross sectional imaging via scans from body donors versus living individuals. Student participant performance was evalu

Three-Dimensional Volume Rendering of Pelvic Floor Anatomy with Focus on Fibroids in Relation to the Lower Urogenital Tract Based on Cross-Sectional MRI Images.

We aimed to assess the feasibility of developing three-dimensional (3D) models of pelvic organs using cross-sectional MRI images of patients with uterine fibroids and urinary symptoms and of obtaining anatomical information unavailable in 2D imaging modalities. We also aimed to compare two image processing applications. We performed a feasibility study analysing MRI scans from three women, aged 30 to 58 years old, with fibroids and urinary symptoms. Cross-sectional images were used to render 3D models of pelvic anatomy, including bladder, uterus and fibroids, using 3D Slicer and OsiriX. Dimens

Current Understanding of the Anatomy, Physiology, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Neurofluids: Update From the 2022 "ISMRM Imaging Neurofluids Study group" Workshop in Rome.

Neurofluids is a term introduced to define all fluids in the brain and spine such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and interstitial fluid. Neuroscientists in the past millennium have steadily identified the several different fluid environments in the brain and spine that interact in a synchronized harmonious manner to assure a healthy microenvironment required for optimal neuroglial function. Neuroanatomists and biochemists have provided an incredible wealth of evidence revealing the anatomy of perivascular spaces, meninges and glia and their role in drainage of neuronal waste products. Ultrasound-assisted lumbar puncture with a horizontal and perpendicular paramedian approach based on positioning in patients with abnormal spinal anatomy: a case report and technical description.

BACKGROUND: The use of ultrasound has been reported to be beneficial in challenging neuraxial procedures. The angled probe is responsible for the main limitations of previous ultrasound-assisted techniques. We developed a novel technique for challenging lumbar puncture, aiming to locate the needle entry point which allowed for a horizontal and perpendicular needle trajectory and thereby addressed the drawbacks of earlier ultrasound-assisted techniques. CASE PRESENTATION: Patient 1 was an adult patient with severe scoliosis who underwent a series of intrathecal injections of nusinersen. The pr
