This report examines the long-term results obtained in 50 patients transplanted between 1977 and 1990 with kidneys from cadaveric donors aged 55-70 (median 59) years. The recipients comprised 27 men and 23 women aged 8-68 (median 42) years. In all, 20 patients (40%) had end-stage renal disease on the basis of glomerulonephritis, whereas 8 (16%) were diabetic. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease of unknown aetiology with pulmonary involvement in most patients. Uveitis is common and often characteristic. We report a case of ocular sarcoidosis with grossly atypical contiguous optic neuropathy and choroiditis and describe the diagnostic challenges in this highly unusual presentation. High-dose systemic corticosteroid and immunosuppressive treatment was required for sustained control of intraocular inflammation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) predominantly affects women. Reasons for this are unclear and few series have assessed long-term outcomes of men with AIH.
METHODS: To evaluate the clinical course and outcomes of 51 men from a total of 238 consecutive patients with definite AIH at a single centre from 1971 to 2005. The primary outcome measure was death or liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in patients transplanted at the Organ Transplant Center of Catholic University in Rome appears to have increased in recent years.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics of KS in a group of transplant recipients.
